The hotel sits overlooking Liugongzhen Park, in Taipei’s hip (and historic) Da’an District. The hotel’s PR guru, Mr. Calvin Lai, picked me up and gave me a tour of the facilities. Impressive is an understatement…

The design of the hotel really has a rich, warm feel to it.

Interestingly, the hallway walls and room doors are adorned with copper plating.

You may notice hand and fingerprints from the guests on the walls, and the preservation of these is actually intentional. It’s a way for guests to leave their mark on the hotel, and kind of  give the place a broken in feel. This quirky idea is the brainchild of mastermind designer Ray Chen.

I was fortunate to experience his other designs in both HOTEL QUOTE and GLORIA RESIDENCE as well…each with their own unique feel.

When I reached my room, this was the greeting I found waiting for me. What a nice touch, to put my name up on the giant flats screen TV! I believe it is also programmed into the digital readout on the in-room phone. What a way to make feel guests feel welcomed and valued.

The rooms envelop you in a warm atmosphere of plush fabrics, carpets, and wood paneling. Leather is used as tasteful accenting on some of the furniture as well. As is the case with all Gloria Hotel properties I toured, there is a nice oversized safety deposit box provided (although Taipei feels quite safe to me).

Room Details

I loved the vintage lighting and control switches in the rooms, what a nice retro touch! Ray Chen is a big fan of chandeliers, too…and you’ll notice them throughout the hotel – even at the side of your bed. Quite a unique and dramatic touch.

Another “vintage” feature is the deliberate choice to include normal keyed locks. I can’t remember the last time I stayed at a hotel this nice that didn’t use electronic room cards. The locks are concealed behind classy copper (or brass?) covers. I’m a sucker for nostalgia, so I loved this.

Pictured here is the beautiful, spacious layout of the Deluxe Room. It comes complete with a desk and sleek leather chair. My “job” has provided many, many stays in hotels and resorts…but very few have bedding with this level of comfort. Honestly, the Gloria Hotel group (or Ray Chen…or both?) really hit the nail on the head with their heavenly comforter and mattress choices.

The Most Elegant Bathroom…All To Myself

Can you believe this? I took full advantage of this luxurious bathtub, and was quite amazed by the electronic toilet. Upon approach, the lid automatically lifts, and the inside of the bowl is illuminated with blue LED lighting. Of course it includes a bidet, and even has the option to adjust both water placement and pressure. I believe the seat is heated as well.

HOTEL PROVERBS spares no expense…even the faucets are classy works of art.

Depending on which way your room faces, you may get a nice view of the city and park below.

It was a beautiful day in Taipei.

I took the elevator down to check out the bar / lounge below. I’d say this elevator wins the award for best & most hip mood lighting…

EAST END Bar – One of the Hottest in Taipei

Sadly, I didn’t have time to experience the bar at night. I’ve heard plenty of stories about it, though…and even during the day, it looks like an incredible place to have a drink. The bar / lounge is owned by world famous Tokyo mixologist Hidetsugu Ueno. Apparently it’s one of the trendiest cocktail bars in Taipei’s Eastern District.

By the way, note the grey tiles on the right and above the bar. They can be found adorning the walls of the lobby and bar…each one is unique, and they were collected from vintage buildings in New York!

TK SEAFOOD & STEAK Restaurant

The EAST END Bar is not the only famous establishment housed in the hotel…this steakhouse is also quite known for it’s fresh and unique menu options. When you walk into the lobby, on the left you’ll notice a curing rack on display…complete with curing meats inside!

Apparently the chef owns a farm, and the restaurant’s ingredients are organic, and straight “from farm to table”. Be sure to check out the Jack Daniel’s infused steak as well!

Above, you’ll notice the dining hall, with an impressive display of the before mentioned chandeliers.

Here you can get an idea of how fresh the seafood options are…I believe the chef and dining staff were conducting a training in the background.

Rooftop Swimming Pool – Hotel Proverbs Review

I loved being up here….I swam just before closing, with sweeping views of downtown Taipei and the iconic Taipei 101 building on the skyline.

That’s about it for my first trip to Taiwan…though I doubt it will be my last. I loved this friendly country so much. I plan on coming back to explore much more (and even try to learn some Mandarin!) Big thanks to Calvin Lai, Spud Chang, and the rest of the helpful staff at the hotel. Your warm service and attention to detail did not go unnoticed….

This is a traditional Cantonese restaurant known for its dim sum and roast duck. In fact, the restaurant is famous for serving “Peking Duck” an impressive nine different ways.

My host Calvin Lai welcomed me to Taipei, and we began our “culinary tour”. First up was a sampling of some of Taiwan’s famous teas.

Starting from lightest to darkest, we sampled green tea, then oolong, then the heaviest roast – the black teas. My personal favorite was the first, known as “Biluochun Green Tea”. It is grown in Sanyi, Miaoli – Taiwan, and is quite accurately described as having an elegant taste.

This is when Chef Fong, a Hong Kong native, appeared on the scene. Along with a perfectly roasted duck, he began to put on quite a show for us.

With expert precision (and an incredibly sharp knife), he presented us with a plateful of sliced duck – crispy skin and all.

The chef was quite friendly, and kind to pose for a photo before returning to the kitchen.

After a brief explanation once more dishes were presented, we were ready to sample our sliced duck.

As mentioned earlier, the restaurant serves roast duck nine different ways…but we only had enough time (and appetite) to try three.  I have to admit I was a bit skeptical, because I swear I tried duck before, and did not care for it. This time, however, was completely different. I guess you could say it was love at first bite.

The first method used a thin wheat “pancake” (more like a crepe, I suppose) to wrap the duck meat, along with some spring onion and pickled ginger. A slight dip in the included sauce was the final touch before tasting. Wow. The meat was tender and succulent, expertly cooked and proportioned with the thin, crispy skin.

All methods have their appeal, but this was by far my favorite. Such a unique and delicious experience!

The next method was Dried Tangerine Congee, or Chinese porridge. This recipe uses duck bones, along with traditional Chinese medicinal ingredients. The rich duck oil is well suited for for the taste and texture of the congee.

The third method uses a lettuce leaf to create a sauteed, minced duck wrap. You can see the minced duck meat on a small plate in the distance here.

Again, I preferred the “pancake” option, but everybody will have their own tastes and preferences, I suppose.

The next dish was quite special. Another one of the chef’s signatures, this is a goose liver soup made with precision sliced tofu.

Shaped like a flower, it’s quite obvious that a lot of work went into this detailed presentation. I didn’t even know it was possible to slice tofu this finely!

Our meal was topped off with some traditionally baked Cantonese apple pies. They were lightly sprinkled with cinnamon, and uniquely shaped liked small sandwiches. I don’t particularly like apple pie, but I must say – they were exquisite.

I took a look around the restaurant and snapped a photo of the dining hall before preparing to leave.

Overall, I was so impressed by this unique dining experience. It is clear that so much goes into the painstaking preparation of these dishes…and that passion and dedication shines through with each savory bite.

Open For Business – & Better Than Ever

I know it’s been over 3 years…but I guess I didn’t expect this much progress. The Philippines is a country close to my heart, and it has many strengths. However, if I’m being honest, progress isn’t really one of them. Like the U.S., there is so much political infighting. Progress moves at a snail’s pace…if things are even moving forward at all.

However, Tacloban looked great. It was bustling with shops and businesses, and the quality of goods and services went far beyond my expectations. It’s not a large city, but somehow it feels more sophisticated like one.

I had a motorbike very generously provided by Haven’s Tourist Transport near the airport. Rhoel, the owner, was a great guy. He gave me a quick tour of the area before I took the bike out myself.

I stopped by a few places downtown. The first was beautiful Hotel Alejandro, which dates back to prewar times. There is an impressive exhibit with hundreds of historical photos on the walls. After that, I checked out Sto Niño Church, which is a vibrant white color now that it has been restored post-typhoon.

Next was the Sto. Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum, a rest home built for former President Marcos’ wife Imelda. Apparently her bathroom was larger than most of the citizens’ homes, and she actually ended up staying in the place only once.

I was able to do some street photography downtown, where I captured the hustle and bustle of the jeepneys, trikes, and commuters. Last, I visited the Anibong Memorial, or Yolanda Shrine. Many cargo ships washed ashore during the storm, but people began visiting and taking photos of this one in particular. Knowing this, the government decided to turn it into a monument – to memorialize the victims of the super typhoon.

The MacArthur Landing Site

Leyte is famous with WWII history buffs. That’s because just south of Tacloban, you can find the site of General Douglas MacArthur’s famous return to the Philippines. The American general had been forced to flee from the Japanese previously, but he kept his promise – and these statues memorialize his unit’s return.

It was quite surreal for me, because I ended up here on the 4th a July, our Independence Day in the U.S. It’s a time of celebration with friends and family, which I was desperately missing, having been on the other side of the world for over a year. Somehow, visiting this monument on this day brought me home.

I’ve always wanted to come here. It’s actually a National Park, and it’s located in the town of Palo, about 10 kms south of Tacloban City.

Tacloban Restaurants

This is what particularly impressed me about Tacloban. The business owners seem to be so motivated, and the service + quality standards are a cut above much of the rest of the country. I guess I was impressed by the food in Leyte and Samar in general. Are the ingredients better in this region, or do people just have tastes that fall more in line with mine? 

Jo’s Chicken Inato Milagrina

Rewind back to March, 2013. I’m wandering the streets of Dumaguete (southern Philippines), with a hunger in my belly. I find a nice looking chicken restaurant, and try some Chicken Inasal.

Now fast forward to present day. I never imagined I would receive an invite to dine with the owner of the Tacloban branch, 3 years later. Jo’s Chicken Inato Milagrina serves family-style Filipino food in a comfortable garden-style environment.

The owner, Apple Anido Alagon was kind to prepare a nice selection of dishes and desserts for me to sample. Loved the Pineapple Mango Ginger Slush…all shakes and slushes are made with real fruit.  Also pictured is the dessert turon (fried banana) with langka (jackfruit) and ice cream.

Next is the house specialty. It looks like Bacolod-style Chicken Inasal, but with a pork BBQ stick included. It’s called Jo’s Chicken Inato Combo. Last, a plate of Zamboanga-style Spicy Shrimp.

Yes, there’s also unli (unlimited) rice.

Another one of Apple’s claims to fame is her Salted Egg Potato Chips. Apparently they have proven quite popular with the locals, even some being taken back home as pasalubong, or souvenir gifts. If it’s not obvious, Jo’s is well suited for Asian / Filipino taste buds.

Apple’s family has been in the Leyte region for generations, as is evident by the 90 year-old fountain on display in the garden. It was built by her great grandparents. She does quite a bit of community outreach as well, and is just a bright and cheery person in general. Stop by and check the place out!

Canto Fresco Pizza (Italian Influenced)

Pizza is one of my guilty pleasures, and the best way to cure my homesickness when I’m out on the road. However, it’s not always easy to find decent pizza in the Philippines. Well, Canto Fresco goes well beyond decent pizza, in fact it’s quite gourmet. I was particularly interested in the Mozzarella Bites I saw on the menu…

Oh my, they really hit the spot. It’s so nice to nice to have legit pizza with authentic ingredients like this. I can’t remember name of the one I ordered, but I’ve never tasted anything like it. Very festive! Haha. Honestly, I enjoyed it, but the herb flavor they used could have been toned down a tiny bit. It was unique, but a bit overpowering.

The carafe of mixed fruit and vegetable juices was delicious! Very refreshing. I was hoping to find a menu online so I could specify all items, but no luck. Anyhow, the ingredients are fresh, pizza is homemade (and hand-tossed), and the indoor / outdoor seating atmosphere is rustic and charming. Very much recommended!

Highside Bar & Restaurant

How perfect is it to visit a motorcycle-themed restaurant during my motorbike trip around Leyte? Highside was born from a passion for riding, but also from the tragedy of typhoon Haiyan. I sat with a few of the owners, Jo Jo and Mal, and listened to their story.

Mal has quite a harrowing tale of loss and survival himself. After the storm, the old friends would gather to have drinks and perhaps try to cheer each other up. They only had each other, as their wives and remaining family members had been relocated to safer areas. Like thousands of other Taclobanons, they had lost so much. Their city was devastated. What to do now?

Well, you know the expression…when life gives you lemons, you make lemonade. In their case, they rebuilt. Not only that, but they channeled their love of motorcycling into a restaurant business, and even repurposed the remnants of vehicles destroyed in the storm. These pieces were used to decorate the bar, along with some of their own complete motorcycles, which were left inoperable.

The guys told me that before, people were more timid to invest their money in new businesses, or to spend it around town having a good time. However, the storm taught them that you never know what will happen tomorrow, so you might as well enjoy today.

I’ll never forget Jo Jo telling me “Money could do nothing for us. During the storm, Taclobanons were all struggling together. ..regardless of their income or status. That storm leveled the playing field”. A powerful reminder of this sits right on the wall. It’s the hood and trunk of a fancy BMW, which completely washed away in the storm. Oil barrels are now creative lounge seating, Hummer tires serve as giant beer coasters.

Speaking of beer, this is the best place to make it happen. The food is excellent, too. While not a single dish let me down, I especially loved the spicy jalapeño “lumpia”, called “Dynamite”. It’s jalapeño, cheese, chili, and ground beef – wrapped up lumpia style, and served with a tangy sauce.

I have to give it to these guys, they have done a great job making the most of this truly unfortunate situation. They felt like brothers to me, and I hope to visit them in their popular hangout again someday.

HQ Food Park

While checking out the food stalls on Justice Romualdez Street, I met a guy who recommended a newly opened place south of town. It sounded familiar, and I realized I had passed it on my motorbike on the way to the MacArthur Landing site.

I came for an early dinner during the week (hence the smaller crowd). I imagine it gets pretty lively during the weekends. HQ is the first of its kind in Tacloban – a large food / gastro park, complete with drinks, darts,  and live music.

I love the graffiti mural of General MacArthur out front…due to its proximity to the landing site, that was a nice touch.

I found some super cheap and delicious liempo (pork belly) here…nice to have a kamayan dinner! That means you eat only with your hands. I loved that they serve the rice wrapped in coconut leaves…I think this is called puso in Cebu. Anyhow, HQ Food Park is open pretty late, and worth checking out!

Cafe Lucia – Definitely Worth a Mention

This charming little cafe sits across from the Tacloban Astrodome. It serves delicious + affordable coffee and snacks. Really, I was impressed! Wish there were more places like it in the Philippines, and that I had more time to explore other menu options:)

GV Hotel is a super cheap option right downtown. A good value, but you get what you pay for.

Ironwood Hotel is a classy place (more money, but still a great value). It has a very good reputation, with plenty of rave reviews.

How To Get There

Yes, from the outside, the building itself is a bit sparse. It has a simple, plain white exterior with no accenting. That’s because Momo leaves nature to provide the accenting! The vibrant green plants and coconut trees on the property beautifully compliment the blue hues from the pool, sky, and the sea…which is literally just a few steps away. 

Momo Beach House is a few kilometers away from the busy tourist-mecca of Alona Beach. Just getting there feels like an adventure, because the last stretch is a dirt road leading to a jungle beach! I love it. Here, you’ll find a quaint, charming refuge from the cookie-cutter hotels that pepper much of Panglao Island.

My Momo Beach House Review – It’s All in the Details

The artistic and “beachy” touches around the property were much appreciated – like this creative solution for sandy toes!  Yes, Momo has a lot of character. It is at once bright, cheery, and yet somehow….rustic. To me, right down to the music, everything about the ambience was just right. Known as an “eco-chic boutique hotel“, you’ll notice their environmentally-friendly soaps and shampoos in the bathroom. Nice!

They were also very kind to create a hand-drawn welcome sign for me before I arrived. I thought it might be something they do for invited guests only, but the next day I realized that everybody gets the same treatment. That is a great way to make your guests feel welcomed and special.

A peak inside the rooms reveals a bold splash of design and color. The space feels light and airy, but not in a whimsical way. It’s tasteful, without being kitchy or cheesy (in my opinion, anyway).

Initially, the beach itself may not wow you. It’s not the most perfect white sand, nor is it the ultimate beach for swimming. However, it still has something that Alona Beach mostly lost decades ago – local flavor. If you take a short walk down the beach, you can ease into the real Philippines here; local children play in the sun while their fathers return with fresh-caught dinner from the sea.

As you can see below, I did swim, and tried my hand at snorkeling as well. I must say – I was pleasantly surprised! You need to bring your own gear (for now), and I recommend wearing a life jacket, because the good stuff is 2 or 3 meters deep. Some of the best snorkeling can be found along the reef wall near the concrete pier on the left side of the beach. That pier is also a great spot to watch the sunset, by the way.

Note: Sunblock can kill coral reefs, so please try to wear a reef-friendly variety!

The Tastiest Restaurant Menu Options in all of Bohol

I know that’s a bold statement, but it’s just my opinion! I got my first taste immediately on arrival, with my refreshing and delicious pandan juice “welcome drink”. I thought that the restaurant at Momo had more solid dishes than anywhere else on the island. The lightly-crisped chicken and vegetables were delicious, as were the marlin, salad, and breakfast sausage in the morning.  Speaking of which, I’m very particular about coffee, and apparently, they are as well.

Oh! I almost forgot. The beer was really, really cold. That is soooo important. Nobody wants warm beer on their vacation, right?

Put Quite Simply, Momo Feels Like Home

Yes, that is the best way to describe it. Well, I wish I had a home like this! Momo is relaxed and unpretentious, yet very “clean and crisp”, as I saw it described somewhere. That really is a great way to put it!

Is it the fanciest resort in Bohol? No. Does it have the most stunning views? Maybe not…but it is lush and beautiful. Momo has heart and soul; I love the feeling that being there gave me, and I want more of it. That is not easy to capture, and I tip my hat to Momo for pulling it off.

I stayed with some amazing properties in Bohol, but this is the one I consider home. I would come back in a heartbeat, and I would like to thank the very generous and accommodating staff for hosting me. I’m so pleased to be able to share this wonderful experience with you! Situated just northeast of Makati, Kapitolyo boasts more reasonably-priced hip restaurants than anywhere else I have been in Manila…and it shows no signs of slowing down. A community of food stalls called “Gastro Park” recently opened up, and another new and exciting restaurant seems to open up each and every day.

In this charming little neighborhood you can find anything your taste buds are craving – from a (cheap, but gourmet) 24-hour breakfast joint, to a top-notch sushi restaurant, to an authentic Irish pub. Of course, you can find plenty of great Filipino food as well.

Manila is quite a hectic city, but somehow Kapitolyo still feels more like a relaxed community. To be honest, it kind of reminds me of Brooklyn before it became too expensive. Right now there is still a funky, independent vibe. The food quality is quite high, but the prices are still reasonable. Let’s hope the arrival of the upscale new Rockwell condominiums won’t change the feel of this place too much.

Karen’s Kitchen

How about some afternoon tea…in wonderland? Well, at Karen’s Kitchen, you can do just that. Tucked away off one of Kapitolyo’s side streets, Karen and interior decorator Joi Santos Cutter have created a quirky, charming space that truly transports you into another world.

Karen is well known for her mouth-watering desserts, but she also puts a lot of love into her healthier dinner options. I personally loved the Dalandan (citrus) Chicken. Follow this up with her incredible Sticky Toffee Pudding or frozen Ube-cado Brazo, and you’ll surely be hooked!

Hopefully Karen will be there during your visit…because she is just as sweet as her desserts! She really knows how to make her guests feel welcome and special. This is an excellent place for baby/bridal showers, tea parties with old friends, or for anybody who has a sweet tooth…and is looking for a truly unique place to indulge! My full experience here.

Haru Sushi

To be honest, I’ve always been skeptical about ordering sushi in the Philippines. It’s just not something I hear people talk about so much. Haha….however, after walking past Haru Sushi enough times, I finally decided to give it a try. I’m so happy I did!

I have gotten used to the excellent Sushi available to us in San Francisco, but Haru definitely did not disappoint me. The decor, staff and service was just wonderful, and all the ingredients were fresh and prepared just right. I’m a big fan of Agedashi (lightly fried) Tofu, and along with my spicy Dynamite Roll (tuna, salmon, and Japanese cucumber), I highly recommend both.

Cafe Juanita

From what I recall, Cafe Juanita was the first restaurant in the area, and it’s been going strong ever since. The decor is an eclectic mix of fabric and designs from all over the Philippines. The menu consists of very authentic Filipino comfort food, and while it’s a little on the pricey side, the quality ingredients and rich flavors are every bit worth it.

This would be a great place to bring a visitor who is new to the Philippines, or just take your friends and family for an excellent home-cooked Filipino meal. I tried the fried calamares, beef kare kare (meat in a sauce made from peanut butter, garlic, and onions…it’s much better than it might sound!), sinigang baboy (tangy tamarind pork soup), and the national dish, chicken adobo.

Everything was extremely flavorful (that’s how Filipinos tend to like it:), and I enjoyed it, with the exception of the “adobong bisaya”, which is a dry, crispy version of adobo. My Filipino friends love dishes like this (crispy pata is another), but I have yet to develop a taste for crispy meat. Haha.

The dessert offered to me was their cassava cake, and I really fell in love with it! Highly recommended. In general, the atmosphere and service here was excellent…it’s no surprise that they are the same owners as Haru Sushi next door! They have a piano player that entertains guests on the weekends, and being a piano player myself, I thought that was a nice touch.

Gastro Park

Just off the main street (down the small street across from Ace Hotel), you can find the recently opened Gastro Park food stalls. If this large park is not an indicator that Kapitolyo is fast becoming Manila’s “foodie mecca”, I don’t know what is. 

Unfortunately, I haven’t had the time to explore it as much as I would like….but the Seventh Element Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream certainly got my attention! There are so many dining options to choose from in the park, maybe someday I will update this blog after sampling some. 

A Unique Foodie Experience – At All Price Ranges

My personal favorite in Kapitolyo is Kanto’s Freestyle Breakfast, which wins a special place in my heart for being open all night and serving the best tocilog (sweet pork, egg, and rice) I have ever tasted. They also serve a huge assortment of savory and dessert pancakes, along with local barako coffee. Just about everything on the menu is under 100 pesos! Look for it diagonally across from the new food park.

Another very popular place is Silantro Fil-Mex Restaurant, which serves nachos, burritos, and cheese quesadillas. Be warned, though…these are not authentic, because they have a Filipino twist to them. That basically means everything ends up tasting like caldareta (tomato-based stew dish). Everybody seems to absolutely love this place, so you may find yourself waiting for up to an hour to be seated at peak times.

Stop by Locavore and try their unique and famous “Sizzling Sinigang” (again, I think this might just be a Filipino favorite). Locavore has excellent fried chicken – I never tasted anything quite like it. The atmosphere is sleek and modern, but not pretentious or unwelcoming at all. I really love it.

Locavore also serves a delicious California-style craft beer called “Fish Rider Pale Ale“, and it’s the best price I’ve seen for it anywhere! It’s nice for me to taste that little piece of home, even though the beer is brewed right there in Manila! You can also find it (along with plenty of European brews) at St Patrick’s Irish Pub on the main road.

Other Unique Kapitolyo Dining Options:

Fried soft shell crab burger @ Crunchy Crab (the entire crab between the sandwich buns!)

Shawarma @ Uncle Moe’s

Thai Food @ Smile Elephant

Street tacos (I recommend shrimp) @ Taco Venga

Ace Water Spa

To be honest, from the outside, Ace reminds me of other hotels in Manila that are quite pricey, but rarely worth it. However, after staying here I changed my mind. Prices are reasonable, the place is kept up very well, the service is excellent, and the views of the city from Sky High Bar can’t be beat. Also worth mentioning is the breakfast buffet, blazing wifi speeds, and super comfy bed!

Going in, I had very low expectations of the water spa. I mean, what is a water spa, anyway? I had no idea. I couldn’t imagine water being able to give me any kind of worthwhile massage…and boy, was I wrong. I think I stayed in the water for a few hours! If you have the time, there’s enough pressure to relax all your different muscle groups. I also liked that I was the one in charge of the massage, for a change. A very cool experience!

Privato

I would describe Ace Hotel as warm, modern, and homey. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more sleek and modern, try Privato Hotel. The reviews are quite good…the prices aren’t bad, and they also have incredible views from their rooftop bar.

#9 – Heritage Houses and Mansions

Camiña Balay Nga Bato is turning 150 years old this year!  Located in the Villa area of the city, it provides a beautiful and fascinating glimpse into the lives of its wealthy  previousowners.  Find it on Facebook, and also be sure to visit Casa Mariquit in Jaro!

#8 – Buffet At Days Hotel

I have a friend in Iloilo who was so excited when the buffet at Days Hotel opened – he was practically in tears when he told me the story!  Haha.  Yes, the variety and quality of food is impressive, especially when you consider the price!  Did I mention the desserts?  Oh, the desserts…

#7 – Madge Coffee Shop in La Paz Market

Finally, I found an affordable coffee shop in the Philippines!  Move over, Starbucks and Figaro – Madge has brewed native coffee for just 25 pesos a cup.  Regular customers even get their own mug on the shelf!  This place has so much character, I really fell in love with it. 

For a more modern (yet still affordable) coffee shop, check out the many locations “Coffee Break” has around the city.  Each store has a unique “le cirque” or “circle chair”…here I am enjoying the one in Smallville:)

#6 – Nightlife and Partying in Smallville

Iloilo loves to party.  How do I know?  I know because this is the first city I have ever been to that actually has a “vomit fee” for customers who had a bit too much fun!  Haha.  I saw these signs at quite a few establishments.

Seriously though, people were well behaved, and the nightlife in Smallville was a blast!  Here’s a shot from Club Aura on a weekend when I was there…

#5 – The Women Saints of Molo Church

Molo Church is unique for two reasons: One, it is constructed of coral rocks and a mortar held together by a mixture of egg-whites and sand.  Two, the saints on display in this church are all women!  Try some delicious bibingka and fishballs from the street-vendors out front…

#4 – Calle Real

These historic buildings along JM Basa street were created during the commonwealth period, and are now heritage sites.  I took this photo from inside the jeepney…speaking of which, the jeepney drivers in Iloilo seem to take great pride in their unique, modern designs!

#3 – Batchoy in La Paz Market

I have a confession to make – batchoy is not my favorite.  However, don’t let that discourage you from trying it, because everybody else LOVES batchoy!  La Paz is home to the original batchoy…this photo with bloggers Elal and Marcos was taken at Deco’s, but also try Netong’s and Ted’s.

#2 – Jaro Cathedral’s Famous “Growing Statue”

Wow, what a story!  Supposedly, fisherman found this statue floating in the Iloilo River in 1587.  It was too heavy to lift, but became easier when they decided to transfer it to Jaro Cathedral.  There, it was reported to grow over the years – so large that it was moved to the case on the front balcony!

#1 – The FOOD!!  Yes, Iloilo is a Foodie’s Dream Come True!

The thing that really struck me about Iloilo is the number of small and independently owned restaurants – compared to other cities in the Philippines, the selection and quality is just staggering!  The best part is that it’s all quite affordable.  This is a great city for a budget food trip!

In Iloilo, food is the star of the show.  My absolute favorites were the Chicken Tinuom @ Bauhinia Filipino Cuisine, Blueberry pancakes @ Punot Restaurant, the ambiance and great food at both Tatoy’s + Buto’t Balat, and finally, the unforgettable French Toast at Dova Brunch Cafe.

Yes, Ilongos Have Good Taste.

My Hotel and Guest House Recommendations

Days Hotel Iloilo

This warm and welcoming hotel is conveniently located in the upper levels of Atrium shopping mall.  There’s even a supermarket on the ground floor – and I have friends that shop there from as far as away as northern Antique.  Yes, the selection is that good. 

The mall also has a hair salon, and many other shops and services.  Very convenient!  

As for the hotel itself, I really felt at home there.  It could be because the staff is so warm and friendly.  The room felt homey and the bathroom was quite nice and modern.  I loved the little things, such as coffee and tea in the room, along with a small water heater.  

Days Hotel invited me to experience their Thanksgiving dinner, and that was much appreciated, because I was 10,000km away from my own family for the holiday.  With an authentic turkey dinner and plenty of new friends from the hotel, it was just what I needed!

As mentioned before, the buffets I had at the restaurant there were quite memorable (and breakfast is included:)  I recommend my friends to eat there – if they’re staying in the hotel or not!

The gym is nice, and I also experienced a 90 minute “Journeys” massage and hot sauna session.  What a great way to relax after sight seeing around the city – highly recommended!   Days Hotel really took care of me.  When you go, I hope you will tell them I say hi!

Amigo Terrace Hotel

This beautiful hotel is located in the historic old business district, and it features a classy, modern design.  The common areas are especially sleek. 

The spacious business center equipped with new Macs was a nice touch, but my absolute favorite part of this place was the heavenly bed I slept in – probably the most restful sleep I’ve had in the Philippines so far!  My room had a strong wifi connection as well.

The hotel is conveniently located near the Chinese-Filipino Friendship Arch, beautiful and historic Calle Real, and famous Roberto’s Siopao Restaurant (see above).  Their provided breakfast was very tasty, as was the very reasonably priced Chinese restaurant Gloria Maris downstairs. 

Did I mention that Amigo Terraces has a grand piano?  That was an unexpected plus, as I love to play!  Speaking of playing, they even have a casino on the premises!

Ong Bun Pension House (Budget)

Don’t expect too much luxury at these prices – the rooms are very basic (though you can ask about deluxe rooms with more options).  However, I have to say that the staff were some of the friendliest I have ever encountered during my travels!  An excellent value for those on a very tight budget.

Baskog Ang Iloilo!

Yes, from an outside perspective, I really do get the impression that Iloilo is on the verge of something big.  I applaud the city’s use of solar technology in City Hall, as well as the creation of bike lanes and jogging paths along the beautiful Esplanade! 

I do hope other cities in the Philippines will take Iloilo’s lead and implement some of these changes as well.  I look forward to seeing what’s next for this this vibrant, blossoming city!

To be honest, I asked many, many people (locals and foreigners) what they like about Manila, and over and over, I was met with head-scratching and silence.  They all told me they would think about it and get back to me.  

I’m still waiting.

You see, Manila is a city that people love to hate.  Dan Brown mentioned it being the “Gates Of Hell” in one of his novels, but for many travelers coming to the Philippines, Manila is in fact the jumping-off point to many stunning beaches – and paradise must be earned…by surviving Manila.  If you have anything less than 2 weeks in the Philippines, I suggest booking your flight out to the islands for a few hours after you land in Manila.  That way you have a little room just in case there are delays, but also don’t even have to leave the airport – because here’s the thing: DON’T LEAVE THE AIRPORT.  

Wait…So You DO Have To Leave The Airport?  Don’t stress.

If you do happen to have an extended layover or job post in Manila, don’t worry.  I’ll help you make the most of it.  The city is not everybody’s favorite, but if you go about visiting at the right time (and in the right way), you might even find that you enjoy it!  Once you get past the gauntlet of traffic and smog, there is plenty of good shopping, dining, and even historical attractions – assuming you know where to look.

Today’s Manila – Times Have Changed

The city is far different than what many people imagine.  While it still struggles with a massive population and quite a bit of poverty, paradoxically, it is also a bustling modern metropolis with a booming economy.  Somebody once told me that the Philippines isn’t a poor country, it’s actually a rich country full of poor people. 

Shiny skyscrapers are being erected at an almost unimaginable rate.  Manila boasts (though Filipinos are generally too modest to use such words) world-class hotels, shopping, and dining.  There is even a very hip, thriving art scene that has developed over the past few years.  Some people are shocked to learn this…and a few still think Filipinos all live in slums or in the jungle.  WRONG. 

As I mentioned in a previous article, Manila might frustrate foreign travellers who are used to other large cities.  Things just move at a different pace here, and just because the city is modern does not mean that it is efficient.  It takes time to adjust to.

However, what makes Manila unique to me is the fact that in a city of 12 million plus, Filipinos in Manila have still managed to preserve a sense of community.  To an extent, they still say hi to their neighbors and look out for each other.  What other megacity can say the same?

I would also venture to guess that Manila has more smiles per square kilometer than any other large city in the world.

I recently realized that even I have a distant connection to “the Pearl Of The Orient”.  My great great uncle fought in the battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American war of 1898!

I know this guide to Manila barely scratches the surface, and that there is SO much more to see and explore.  If you have anything to add, please leave a comment!  One place I’d like to explore more next time is Quezon City, because I really loved it when I briefly visited. 

Yes, Manila can certainly test our patience, but I make it a point to try and find the beauty in every place I go.  Eventually, I even found it there.

When To Arrive – Traffic is a Serious Concern

First of all, do NOT land during 7am-9am or 3pm-7pm during the week.  Choose your flight to avoid traffic during these hours.  If it has been raining for a day or two before your flight, you may have to take a raft to your hotel (I’m joking, but the threat of flooding is real, and sometimes I seriously wish this was an option!).  I met a U.S. citizen who, after a 17 hour flight, arrived at 5pm during the rainy season.  He spent 3 hours trying to get a taxi, and then 6 hours riding in one – going only 5km to his hotel!  To be fair, there was also substantial construction going on at the time.

Visas / Money Exchange

Upon arrival at the airport (please don’t judge the country based on the airport…NAIA is notoriously bad), travellers from many countries are granted a visa-free stay for 21 days.  If you insist, it is possible to pay for a visa for up to 59 days.  This may take up to an hour or two to process, and should cost around 2,600 pesos (around $55 USD). 

I prefer to bring minimal cash with me, because with a U.S. card, I can use the BPI ATM right outside the baggage claim area.  I’ve never had a problem with these machines.  If you want to bring money to exchange, I believe there are 24 hour options there in the airport, thought they might be slightly more pricey than options outside.  Might be better to pay more for the airport service and know you aren’t being short-changed.    

Taxis

Taxi drivers in the Philippines are generally honest and will use the meters, but those around the airport have been known to inflate the price. Try to bargain and ask around as much as you can.  Also make sure you check the bills you hand the driver, because in low light, it is possible for foreigners to accidentally give a 1000 note instead of a 100.
 

Safety

To unseasoned travellers from the west, Manila may appear to be much more dangerous than it really is.  There are guards posted with very large guns in front of banks and government offices, but it’s just to intimidate any would-be criminals, and the guards are generally nice as can be.  Just be street smart (especially if you are heading to the shady red-light districts of Makati and Ermita) and you should be fine.   Better to leave any flashy jewellery in your safety deposit box – just in case.

Hotels and Accommodations

Speaking of the red-light districts, this is where most people choose to stay.  It’s not because they are all sex tourists, but because it also happens to be where many hotels, bars, and restaurants are.  At best, the taxi will cost only 250 pesos and take 20 minutes to get to either Ermita or Makati.  More likely it will be 300-400 pesos and take an hour, though.  Makati is probably safer and much less gritty than Ermita.  Here are my hotel choices:

Makati

MNL Boutique Hostel – This charming, colorful little hostel is tucked away behind A-Venue mall in Makati (tell the driver you want to go to the mall, then walk behind and look for the beautiful mural on the wall).  Reasonable rates on both private air-con and also dorm rooms.  It’s also a great place to meet fellow travellers from all over the world! 

By offering free serve-yourself coffee and a simple breakfast, they do a great job fostering a warm, social atmosphere.  The owners can be found popping in from time to time, and their genuine concern for their guests is quite refreshing.  MNL is also technically just outside of the noise and chaos of the red-light district, so that is a plus if you ask me as well.

Tune Hotel – I love the bright, clean, rooms and modern design here.  It is certainly one of the best values I have found while traveling as well.  They keep costs low by only charging you for the amenities you need (cable TV, Aircon…etc).  Customize your own stay!  Technically in the red light district, but tucked away on a side street, and I appreciate that.  You can find the local craft beer “Katipunan” in the attached bar here, so do try it!

Ermita / Malate

Tune Hotel Ermita – Another branch of Tune Hotel, very similar to the one in Makati.  I would prefer to stay in the Makati branch, but if you need to be in the Ermita area for some reason (immigration needs, for example), this is a great place.  Also closer to Luneta and Intramuros.

Malate Pensionne – If you’re looking for a slice of old Manila, this nice alternative is close by.  I loved the rich, old-world feel that the woodwork gives this hotel.  Very close to Remedios Circle as well, where you can find plenty of nice dining options.

Intramuros (near Ermita)

White Knight Hotel – A very nice mid-range hotel right in the heart of historic Intramuros.  Tasteful and cozy, with good food and excellent service from the staff.  People love it, and I can see why.  The hotel is tucked away across the street from St. Agustin church inside a shady courtyard, and occasionally they play (subdued) live music.

Ortigas

A bit further away is Ortigas, and I found that I really enjoyed it up there!  Far from the red light districts, it’s a nice area that’s probably more suited for business travellers.  Still a nice alternative for all travellers in my opinion, though.  There are plenty of good restaurants and a few shopping malls nearby.  

The Malayan Plaza Hotel – Sleek.  With a small kitchen that makes it suited for short or long stays, I felt very comfortable here.  I loved the modern design throughout the hotel.  The pool is elevated about half way up the building, and along with the roof deck, has some beautiful views of the Metro Manila skyline.  The staff is very warm and helpful, and they also have a quality breakfast buffet.   Solid Internet.  Better pricing for long term stays.  The hotel is very close to SM Megamall as well.

The Richmonde – This hotel has homey suites that are also ideal for any length of stay.  My room had a small kitchen with a refrigerator.  The full-sized bathtub was very much appreciated after a long day out exploring.  There is also a nice gym, a beautiful indoor pool, and a generous breakfast buffet.  The lobby and common areas are quite luxurious here.  Lower rates for long term stays.

Where To Eat and Drink

Jollibee – The “McDonalds of the Philippines”, and if you don’t mind fast food, is worth a try.  See why it’s loved by millions of Filipinos all over the world!  Try Mang Inasal Chicken BBQ or Rufos in Makati if you want to move away from fast food a bit (while still remaining affordable).

Sentro – Upscale Filipino food at Greenbelt 3 mall.  I quite enjoyed it!
 
Northpark – A reasonably priced Chinese restaurant chain in Makati and Quezon City (I’m guessing there are other locations as well).  I’ve eaten here many times and recommend it. 

El Chupacabra – My absolute favorite place to eat! It’s tucked away in Makati.  Here you can get “Mexicali” street tacos and enchiladas.  It’s got a great patio, and is a fun place to meet friends for food and drinks.

Seattle’s Best Coffee – Starbucks is available, but if you want to try something different, this U.S. chain isn’t bad.  Surprisingly (because it’s a coffee shop), I found the best American-style pancakes here also!  I’m addicted.

Karen’s Kitchen – This quaint dessert and tea shop is an experience in and of itself. Karen is a charmer, and she makes a mean red velvet cake…as well as mouth watering sticky toffee pudding!

Cafe Andare Nightmarket / Foodtrucks – If you’re visiting on the weekend, there is a great night market in front of Glorietta mall and the Hard Rock Cafe.  Here you can find live music, plenty of great food options, and if she’s still there, a woman who sells American craft Ale and beer at a very good price!  It’s very hard to find in the Philippines, and if you do find it, it’s usually expensive.  I hope she is still there!

There is also a similar night market in Makati very close to MNL Hostel.  It’s next to A-Venue, and there are plenty of great food options there as well.

 
B-Side @ The Collective (Makati) – This is a great place to go for Sunday night Reggae.  Also a very creative art space with a diverse and welcoming crowd.
 
URBN @ The Fort – For those who would like to experience Manila’s dance clubs and thriving nightlife.  The Fort is also a high-end shopping destination, similar to Greenbelt.  It’s a bit further northeast, though.  
 
Chihuahua Mexican Grill – There is a location in greenbelt, but the one in Makati has salsa dancing on Saturday nights, and it’s a lot of fun.  Last I checked, they had a small selection of American craft beer as well!

Global Beer Exchange – All things in moderation, but speaking of craft beer, there is a place in Makati near Magallanes station called Global Beer Exchange.  First of all, definitely try the local San Miguel Pilsen first, because from a beer connoisseur’s perspective, it’s by far the best the country has to offer. 

The irony is that in many parts of the Philippines, Pilsen is considered the “low class” option behind San Miguel Light (beer snobs would refer to this as “piss water”) and super strong Red Horse (this is for getting the job done, taste is secondary). 

However, if you really want to experience some of the unique and hoppy American ale and beer, Global Beer Exchange is the place.  Of course, they have beer from many other countries as well, but I am particularly proud of the craft beer scene that has developed in the U.S. over the past 20 years.  It is just starting to take off overseas, but be prepared to pay a hefty price for it.  Anyhow, this place has a great atmosphere and friendly staff. 

*Update – The Filipino craft beer scene has EXPLODED in the 3 years since I wrote this article. Now there are breweries all over the country, and there are even plenty of “American style” Filipino ales. See below…

Joe’s Brew in Poblacion

“Fish Rider Pale Ale” is my absolute favorite from Joe’s brew, and Joe is an awesome guy. He can often be found drinking right in the bar with his customers, and he might even give you a tour of the upstairs brewery if you’re lucky!

Also check out Beerhouse in Kapitolyo. This place is a testament to just how far Filipino craft beer has come…that’s all they serve here, and from many, many breweries…including their own! It’s nice how supportive the craft beer scene seems to be be in the Philippines.

The Bar@1951 (Malate) – A friend brought me to this little bar/club one night, and I totally fell in love with it.  They have a funky, creative space with classic soul music performed live!  Truly a hidden gem if you ask me.

Rockeoke @ Bowler Restopub – It is claimed that karaoke was invented in the Philippines, not Japan.  These days it’s all about videoke, and to say that Filipinos love videoke is putting it mildly.  It’s is a practically a religion here.  Monday-night Rockeoke takes it to a new level by incorporating a full live band into the mix.  Find it in the ground floor of the Paseo Parkview Towers in Salcedo Village, Makati. Usually starts at 9pm and goes through 2-3 sets, depending on how many people attend.  It’s a blast!

Shopping

Let’s face it, Manila is basically just one giant shopping mall. 

I have never seen so many malls in my life, and navigating between them can be dizzying.  Each mall often has 3 separate numbered sections, which then connect to other malls with multiple numbered sections as well. 

They talk about how you can see the Great Wall of China from space, but sometimes I wonder if you can see the malls of Manila from space as well! 

If you’re a backpacker on a budget and are sleeping without air-con, do like so many locals do – spend a few hours cooling off at the mall!

From Makati, you can be boring and take a taxi to Ayala Center and the other malls, or you can be adventurous and take a jeepney – the “king of the Filipino road”!  Just ask the drivers or people on the street which one to hop in.  It’s a straight shot all the way down, so it’s hard to get lost.  If you decide to walk the 1.5km or so, you can check out beautiful Ayala triangle on the way.  It’s a nice park lined with plenty of shops and restaurants.

Greenbelt

The high end shopping and restaurants can be found at Greenbelt mall.  Note: As for the food, just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it’s good.  I have found that when something is more expensive in the Philippines, it is rarely worth the extra cost.  I say do your research or stick to chains you are already familiar with (and know you like). 

Also take note of the giant chapel in the middle of Greenbelt mall!  It truly is a testament to how spirituality is woven into the fabric of daily life here. 

Landmark

Landmark Mall is just across the road from Greenbelt, which can only be accessed by an overhead walkway.  It is a much more affordable (and crowded) alternative to Greenbelt. 

Glorietta

Glorietta mall is connected to Landmark, and is somewhere in the middle (in terms of cost).

Greenhills

If you want to repair or find a great deal on electronics (or need to get an iPhone unlocked), head to Greenhills in San Juan (near Ortigas).  I actually enjoyed the Greenhills area quite a bit, and might consider staying near there on my next visit.

Cubao X (Expo)

Further north is Cubao X, which offers a hip assortment of everything from vinyl records to retro toys.  A great place for the local art scene and live music as well!

Divisoria

If you really are feeling adventurous, you can head to the chaotic bargain-heaven of Divisoria, a giant street market north of Intramuros.  There is also similar shopping about a kilometer away near Quiapo Church.  You can take the LRT1 and LRT2 trains to get up to this area, and that is an adventure in and of itself.  Try not to do this anywhere near rush hour, and as also goes for the markets, always be mindful of your pockets and bags just in case.  I’ve ridden many times and never had a problem, but I do pay attention – just in case.

Things To Do

Intramuros

My absolute favorite thing to see in Manila is Intramuros, a 600 year-old walled city that the Spanish built.  It is still rich with history, and home to some beautiful old cobblestone streets and churches. 

St. Agustin Church – A 440 year-old UNESCO World Heritage Site, where I eventually learned that the famous explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi’s tomb can be found.  If you’re looking directly at the alter from the back of the church, his tomb is in the room just to the left of the altar.  The church doesn’t look like much from the outside, but my jaw dropped when I walked in. 

St. Agustin Museum – Don’t forget to visit the incredible museum attached to the church!  I didn’t expect much, but was thoroughly surprised by how much there was to see and experience there.  You feel like you’re touring a medieval castle, and in a way, you are.  Well worth the entry fee.

Walking Tour with Carlos Celdran – (Sadly, I believe Carlos has passed away. I’m not sure if this tour is still available in a new form? Please do let me know in the comments if so.) I haven’t had the chance to take this tour yet, but the people have spoken.  From what I’ve gathered, it’s incredibly informative, and wildly entertaining.  Carlos does not hold back, so bring your thick-skin and sense of humor.  The tour is heavy on historical information about Intramuros and Manila, and light on actual walking, so don’t worry about any strenuous activity.  Not exactly cheap, but almost everybody agrees that this tour is worth it. 

Bamboo Bike Eco-Tour  – What an idea!  I haven’t taken this tour either, but again, I hear great things.  These unique bamboo bikes are crafted by the good folks at “Gawad Kalinga” which means to “give care” in Filipino, and is a poverty alleviation and nation-building movement.  This tour combines three things I love – biking, conservation, AND community empowerment!

Luneta (Rizal Park)

Nearby to Intramuros is Rizal Park, or Luneta.  Here you can visit the monument of the man many Filipinos consider to be the national hero – Dr. Jose Rizal.  After dark, the park cools off and the water fountains put on a colorful show.  You can ride a horse drawn carriage, or Kalesa here.  You may be able to ride one all the way to Intramuros as well, but I’m not positive about that.

Binondo

Binondo is also worth exploring.  It’s supposedly the oldest Chinatown in the world.  In fact, Binondo Church was founded in 1596 to serve the Chinese converts to Christianity.  Keep in mind that Intramuros, Luneta, Divisoria, and Binondo are all relatively close to each other, and could possibly all be explored in one long day.  It is wise to group things together by proximity, because as mentioned earlier, you can lose a LOT of time just getting from point A to point B.

If you are staying in Ermita or Malate, don’t forget to wander over and take a stroll down  Roxas Blvd. during the famous Manila Bay sunset!  These shots were actually taken from Mandaluyong, though.  Mall of Asia is another good place to witness a nice Manila Bay sunset. 

Pinto Art Museum – Antipolo

I haven’t been yet, but people rave about the the Pinto Art Museum in Antipolo.  An impressive collection of Philippine art that even non-artsy people seem to be able to appreciate.  It’s a bit far, so probably only good for those who have an extended stay in Manila.  Antipolo is another place I want to explore, so the museum is a good excuse to check it out. 

U.P. Diliman

Finally, if you’re looking for a nice shady place to relax (and try some adventurous eating), explore the tree-lined University of the Philippines – Diliman campus, which is also known for it’s famous isaw (chicken intestines)!  Be sure to ride the unique “ikot” jeepney with the yellow roof, as these iconic vehicles have been around since the very early days of the campus.  “Toki” is,  of course, the reverse route:)  This visit is only advised if you have a long stay, as the campus is quite far.

Boracay.  Boom!!

Trust me – Kim Kardashian’s butt isn’t the only thing that could “break the Internet”. 

Having been told that Boracay was already too crowded and overdeveloped, I managed to avoid the island for over a year during my exploration of the Philippines.

Still, I always wondered, “what is it about Boracay that makes my Filipino friends SO proud?”

Well now that I’ve seen it with my own two eyes, it’s perfectly clear.  Boracay is definitely the “crown jewel” of the 7,107 island of the Philippines.
 
From what I’ve seen, the perfect white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters are unparalleled anywhere in the world!  No wonder Travel + Leisure awarded Boracay “Best Island In The World” in 2012!   

No, these are not just huts on a beach – this is a world-class island with world-class amenities.  No joke.

Friendly Locals

I really was surprised how genuine and friendly the locals were – considering that the island can be so touristy.  I actually came on the bus from a neighboring province.  On the way, I was befriended by a nice old couple who lives on the island.  They guided me all the way to my hotel and didn’t ask for a thing in return. 

“We love tourists, and understand how important they are“, they told me.  Only in the Philippines!

Clean Beaches

Yes, during peak season there can be huge crowds, but what amazed me was how clean the beaches are – despite the crowds!  People can take their drinks right down to the water, but somehow I didn’t see any bottles or trash left behind.  Filipinos and foreign tourists seem to be respectful of this beautiful place, and that makes me happy.  There is a “no smoking on the beach” policy that I appreciate very much as well.  Amazingly, it actually works – I hardly noticed any cigarette butts!

“Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy”

No, I didn’t get to see the untouched Boracay of the 80s and 90s, but I choose to appreciate it for what it IS, not what it used to be.  As Teddy Roosevelt said: “Comparison is the thief of joy“.  As it is now, the island has a lot to offer tourists – whether they’re on a budget or on their honeymoon.  

“Boracay is a place Filipinos can go and be proud…they can watch as the stunning beauty of their country lights up the faces of travelers from all over the world.”

 As a foreigner who is a big fan of Filipino culture, I worried that seeing all the foreign influence on the island would ruin the experience for me.

Actually, just the opposite was true!  Boracay is the least Filipino place in the Philippines, and I realized that’s exactly why my Filipino friends love it so much! 

It’s a place (in their own country) where Filipinos can interact with people and cultures from all over the world. 

For me, San Francisco in California is the same way.  It’s a very international city, and that’s exactly what I love about it. Anyhow, it was a good realization to have about Boracay.

 Yes, Boracay is a place Filipinos can go and be proud…they can watch as the stunning beauty of their country lights up the faces of travelers from all over the world.

So What’s Your Story, Boracay?

Well, the indigenous Ati people have been there for hundreds (thousands?) of years, but in terms of tourism, the story I heard was that German backpackers “discovered” the island in the 1970s.  They would camp out for weeks at a time, and make trips back to the mainland (Panay) when they needed supplies.  However, they couldn’t keep their paradise a secret for too long, and word began to spread.  Soon, Taiwanese and Korean tourists began arriving in droves.  The island has seen massive growth in the past 20 years.

The Full Range Of Experiences (Including Mermaids)

My goal was to explore every nook and cranny of the island  – and document what’s left of the local culture if at all possible.  I stayed on the island for one month (I make these sacrifices for you, I swear:), and in that time, I befriended a family of fishermen who I ate, drank, and stayed with.  I slept on top of a table on their isolated beach – just as they do, and tried to learn as much of the local language (Aklanon) as possible. 

Other than that, I attended a pubcrawl, photographed brilliant, starry skies during the “black moon”, slept in a hammock under the full moon, and woke up to a stunning sunrise (the blue photo below). I volunteered at the local elementary school, made a guest appearance as Wolverine on Halloween, and even attended an actual underwater mermaid wedding! 

I’ll never forget the time I spent on this magical island.

Boracay Hotels and Accommodations

White Beach is broken up into 3 sections, or “stations”. 

• Station 3 is the closest to the jetty port, and is where you can find the best deals on a peaceful stay.

• Station 2 is about a kilometer or 2 away, and is where you can find the parties and nightlife. 

• Station 1 is two to three kilometers away, and is also a good place for peace and quiet – though it’s generally more expensive.

• Diniwid Beach, is a kilometer past Station 1, and it also has some relaxing (but pricey) options.  Bulabog Beach is on the opposite side of the island from White Beach, and has some affordable, less crowded options as well.

Low Season is the time to find the best deals.  This is from May to October, and while the crowds and prices are low, the chance of rain can be high (this is why rainy season is the off season).  High Season is from October to May.  The weather is better, it’s more crowded, and the hotel prices are higher. Peak Season is Christmas, New Years, Chinese New Years, and Holy Week (Easter).  Prices are very high and rooms book up super quick!

Station 3

Boracay 357 Resort

This is a sleek, mid-range hotel.  With a beachfront location, it’s also clean and modern – with a very attentive staff.  People say it’s family-friendly, and also a great a value for the money.

Angol Point Beach Resort – (Nice & Affordable)

If you’re looking for a more rustic island experience (without skimping on quality), check out these upscale, eco-friendly bungalows!  Also a beachfront location, Angol Point feels far-removed from the rest of the commercialized sections of the island.   Highly recommended!

Ocean Breeze Inn – (Budget option)

If you walk 5 minutes in from the beach, you can find nipa huts at Ocean Breeze Inn for even less.  It’s a bit hard to find, so ask a local and tell them it’s near Orchids Resort.  Staff is helpful and friendly, and I the aircon rooms are a great value as well!  Did I mention the free coffee in the morning?  As with everywhere on the island, make sure you bring Mosquito repellant:)

Orchids Resort – (Budget Option)

These “native-style” rooms and cottages are also a great budget option.  Also a 5 minute walk from the beach (though a very scenic and interesting one, if you ask me).  As the name hints, there is a beautiful flower garden in the middle of the property.  The warmth of the staff is akin to “staying with a nice family in the Filipino countryside”.  Breakfast is included.  It may not be a palace, but for the money, it’s an excellent value.

Station 2

The District – (High-End)

The District – I was very happy to be invited to experience this beautiful property!  To be honest, I find that paying a bit more for an experience in the Philippines is very rarely worth it.  This is certainly not the case at The District. 

The hotel itself is modern and elegant. The staff is attentive and quite helpful, and the brunch buffet was generous and delicious!  I loved relaxing in a bed on the beach  as well.

Really, all my expectations were met and even exceeded.  Anybody looking to be pampered during their vacation or honeymoon – this place is perfect!

Patrick’s Home Boracay (Budget)

If you want to be close to the action but save a lot of money, this is your place.  Close to D’Mall, and great for long stays.  Just a short walk inland from the beach.  Don’t expect luxury at these prices, but what you get is really a good value.

Station 1

Nami Resort – (High-End)

This place is famous for its stunning views of the island.  Also great for a honeymoon, or couples looking for a luxurious escape from the noise and crowds of White Beach.  No worries if you need to make a trip to D’Mall or Station 2, though – Nami provides a free shuttle.  It’s an incredible experience staying in one of these cliff-side rooms, not mention taking the bamboo elevator to get up there!  Image source

Boracay Breeze Resort – (Budget)

 Near Balabag church, this is THE budget place in Station 1,  Conveniently located only 5 minutes from Willy’s Rock on White Beach!  Free breakfast.  Also has a convenience store nearby.  Great value for the money.  (Image source)

Bulabog Beach (“Back Beach”)

This is where the locals live…you can still find fishermen at work – and children playing on the beach. 

However, Bulabog beach is also known for adventure sports.  Kitesurfers and windsurfers flock here during the windy season each year.  There are plenty of moderately priced resorts in the area as well. 

This is an excellent place to watch the sunrise.  In fact, Boracay marks the first time in my life that I was able to watch the sun rise over the water, then watch it set over the water later the same day.  Truly an island experience!

It’s great, because if you’re craving some action, White Beach is only a 15 minute walk from here. 

The Lazy Dog Bed & Breakfast 

(Affordable midrange)  I loved this place so much.  When I say it’s cool, I mean it’s literally cool.  As you take the last turn on the sun-parched road to get here, suddenly you are welcomed by a shady corridor and a nice, cool breeze from Bulabog Beach.  Lazy Dog is about a 1 minute walk from the beach.  It’s a very laid-back and hip spot.  The woman managing it is named Djila, and she has done a great job encouraging local artists to contribute to the creative vibe of the place.  With a name like “Lazy Dog”, of course the place is pet friendly.  It’s also got solid Internet and food that people rave about (more on that later)!  Did I mention it’s LGBT friendly as well?

MNL Beach Hostel – (Budget to Midrange) 

A colorful, fun place to meet travelers from all over the world!  They have everything from affordable dorms to private aircon rooms with a (limited) view.  Not only is there a free no-frills breakfast each day, but occasionally they also provide free drinks and events.  Added bonus is that both White Beach and Bulabog  beach are only a short walk from here!  The owners are very kind, and interact with the guests when time allows.  Also note that they have a Manila Location!

Boracay Kite Resort – (Affordable Midrange) 

This is where the thrill-seekers stay.  Want to learn how to kitesurf?  Check.  Go mountain biking around the island?  Check.  Become a mermaid?  Che…wait, wha??  Yes, here you can actually sign up for mermaid lessons (for women and men).

Where To Eat in Boracay (Midrange)

• Sunny Side Cafe (Station 3, beside Boracay Sands Hotel) – Having giant pancakes here is like a religious experience!  You can also request a half order.  They recommended the chocolate espresso (I think?) option, but I still prefer the plain.
  
  Lazy Dog Bed and Breakfast (Bulabog Beach) – The crispy tinapa keeps you coming back.  Namit gid, as the locals say in Aklanon!  Also recommend the mongo, breakfast omelettes, and Vietnamese coffee.  Prices are great, and you can book a room here as well!
  
  Tibraz (Station 2) – The French crepes lured me in…they are half-off every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday!  Mine was savory – chicken pesto.  Still dreaming of that…
  
  Real Coffee (Station 2) – The famous calamansi muffins might just be the #1 pasalubong (travel gift) brought back from the island!  In the early days, many foreigners requested “real coffee” instead of 3 in1, so this place was the first to make that dream a reality!  Haha. 

Charlie’s Steakhouse and Diner

I’m hesitant when it comes to more pricey food options in the Philippines – especially when it comes to “western” food.  However, Charlie (the owner) seemed so confident that I would love his steak, I knew I had to try.  I just have to say…wow.  Worth every penny.  The breakfast platter didn’t seem like much food (considering the price), but when I took my first bite, I had the same reaction as with the steak.  Worth every penny. 

You can tell that great care goes into the ingredients and preparation here, and I’m a HUGE music fan, so I also appreciate the rockin’ theme of the place.  Located across from Balabag School on the main road, Station 2.  Look for the giant guitar out front!

Where To Eat in Boracay (On The Cheap!)

• Joan’s Canteen (Between Station 1 & 2) – I was so happy to find a local carinderia (eatery) serving good, cheap Filipino food!  They seem to have the same thing everyday, but it’s good, and I like the selection.  Lumpiang Gulay, Adobo, Dinuguan, and Menudo.  Service isn’t spectacular, but in my opinion, what you get for the price is.  Located on a shortcut path that runs along the side of Nandana Hotel (Station 1).  The resto is close to where the path meets the main road. 

• Smoke Resto (Station 2) – There are 2 locations in D’Mall.  Also has Filipino food, but a bit more expensive, and in more of a restaurant setting.  They have one of my favorites, pininyahang manok (pineapple chicken).  Less adventurous tourists might try this option for Filipino food.

• Nagisa Coffee Shop (Station 3) – An affordable Japanese place that’s right on the beach.  I had Pork Katsu, and it was good!  Very reasonably priced, as well. 

• Shantal’s Resto Bar (Station 3) – This is more of a stand, and it’s located where the path from Orchids Resort meets the beach.  They have a great happy hour, and I *hear* their burgers are pretty good as well.  Great prices on basic Filipino and western dishes, and you can sit at a table in the sand – right on the beach!  Great if you’re in Station 3 for sunset.

Traveler Tips / Things To Do In Boracay

Getting There

Boracay can be accessed by flying directly to Caticlan airport from Manila (for tips on your layover in Manila, check here).  Sometimes you can find cheaper flights to Kalibo, which is about a 45 minute bus or van ride away from the island.

Transportation vehicles on the island are called “trikes”, and will likely cost 150 pesos to get you from the jetty port to your hotel (or from your hotel to Puka beach).  If you share them with many other people, they can be as cheap as 15 pesos each. 

There are BPI ATMs in Station 2 on the main road (near Balabag Elementary School), and they let you take out 20,000 (almost $500USD) pesos at a time.  I don’t know if all ATMs do, or if it’s just for foreigners, but this was an option for me. 

Touts – You will probably be approached by people selling everything from “selfie-sticks” to sailing tours – they won’t persist if you say no, and they’re usually very friendly. 

Safety –  I don’t know of any real dangers on the island (other than partying too hard and getting sick.  Haha.)  Perhaps people can add their thoughts about this in the comments section.  There are not lifeguards on duty, so it is advisable to be safe when swimming in the sea. 

• D’Talipapa Restaurant – (Station 2) – A fresh seafood market where you can bargain for your dinner, then pay nearby eatery to cook it for you!  Be prepared to do some hard bargaining.  It is possible to get down to 50%…

• Boracay Pubcrawl (Station 2) – Jump between bars and clubs all night long – and with cheery tourists from all over the world!  With drink specials and very animated guides, this event has become wildly popular. Meet at “Station 4 Bar” in the back of Tibraz, and eat before you go!
  

• Island Hopping / Kitesurfing / Mermaid Lessons – Ask the hotels above for info on all of these activities.  You can also go snorkeling on Crocodile Island, cliff jumping at Ariel’s point, climb Mt. Luho, or relax on quiet Puka Beach.  Ilig Iligan is even more quiet.  Be prepared for a long journey!

Take The Official “I Dreamed Of This” Sunset Walking Tour

Haha.  Joke lang, as they say in the Philippines.  It’s not official (and it will be a self-guided tour), but it’s a quite an adventure if you ask me!  Here’s how to do it:

At around 4pm, start walking along White Beach from Station 1 or 2.  Make sure you bring a light with you (flashlight on a phone will work).  Take pictures as the sun begins to dip behind the sails of the paraws (sailboats).  Continue walking to iconic Willy’s Rock, and take pictures of the sun going down behind it also.  You can get beautiful silhouette shots here. 

Continue walking until you get to the “end” of the beach, where you will climb a few stairs and continue to the left – until you get to a large hole in the cliff side.  You can continue around for a nice view, or you can be adventurous and climb through this hole (it’s quite easy).  Make sure you go back to appreciate the view though, and be careful on the narrow ledge.

Continue along the water until the path opens up to secluded Diniwid Beach.  Note the restaurant called Wahine on the right, because you might want to come here on the way back.  Continue to the “end” of the beach again, and climb the stairs and make your way to the left again.  As you get to Nami Resort, look for the sign that says “Spider House“, and continue underneath it…through the cave.  Welcome to Spider House, your tree house-style sunset destination!  I recommend having only drinks for the sunset here, as the food is just OK.  Service is great, though.  Go to Wahine on Diniwid Beach for dinner:)

If you like Spider House, you’ll probably like Red Pirates, which is on the other side of the island in Station 3.  It really feels like a sandy old pirate-bar!  The “cast of characters” who call themselves regulars are quite memorable as well.  I heard that if they are in the sailing mood (or if they really like you), they offer a really unique sailing tour.  I’m pretty sure it goes to incredible Balinghai Resort, which is a very secluded cliff-side resort with a 500 peso (consumable) entry fee. 

Environmental & Community Organizations On The Island

Yes, Boracay is a very unique place, and that is why we need to make sure it is preserved and protected.  I hope you’ll join me in raising awareness about the island’s community and ecosystem.  Here are some resources for you!

The Boracay Foundation is a non-profit that is promoting preservation and sustainability on the island.  I love their motto: “Preserve What We Have, Restore What We’ve Lost“. 

Friends of the Flying Foxes – Each morning that I watched the sunrise, I noticed many large birds flying north along the island.  I was surprised to learn that these are in fact giant bats, known as golden-crowned flying foxes.  These fascinating creatures are endemic to the island, and their numbers are dwindling. Check out this page for more info. 

Strong-Roots Ministries / Oasis Guest House Boracay

I heard stories of an independent missionary couple who were building a guest house near beautiful and secluded Ilig Iligan Beach.  My curiosity piqued, eventually I was able to locate them.  I’m so glad that I did!  They invited me to dinner and explained what their project is all about.  Their lovely little family is working hard to employ and empower local craftsmen and artisans during the construction of their guest house, which is coming along quite nicely.  They also do everything they can to provide support and treatment for less-fortunate locals in need.  Wherever possible, rather than just giving hand-outs, they firmly believe in the concept of “teaching a man to fish“, and I appreciate that.

They have both a Sunday School and feeding program at Yapak Elementary School each week, and I came along to see what it was all about.  They started the program because many kids were making the long walk home at lunch in search of food, only to often find that there was none.  Then they would just skip the rest of the school day rather than go back hungry.

Yes, there are powdery white-sand beaches, but there are also opportunities for dolphin watching, incredible diving, caving, and countryside tours. 

Located in the heart of the Philippines, Bohol is accessible via a direct flight to Tagbilaran from Manila, the country’s capital.  

Pronounced boh-Hole (emphasis on the big H), the island was the site of the very first international peace treaty between the local datu (king), and the Spanish conquistadors.

Boholano people are known to be very warm and friendly, and as you can see, the island they call home is nothing short of spectacular.

Sunrise at Bohol Beach Club, Panglao Island.

Panglao island is where most of the hotels and restaurants are located….it’s about 30 minutes from the airport by taxi or “tricycle” (local transportation). It is connected to the mainland of Bohol by a bridge. FYI: If you’re staying in a resort, they will often provide a shuttle to pick you up. 

Alona Beach

A very popular tourist destination on Panglao island. Here you can find island hopping and dolphin watching tours. While not as crowded as Boracay (its cousin to the west), Panglao can definitely get crowded during the Filipino summer months of March to May…and also during Holy Week each year.

Snorkeling near Momo Beach House, I came across these incredible corals!

Please note: Wearing sunblock with the chemical “oxybenzone” or “Benzophenone-3” kills these beautiful  coral reefs!

Countryside Tour by Motorbike

Of course, there will be countless touts on the beach that will arrange guided tours for a fee, but I always love the adventure of renting my own bike and exploring at my own pace.

If you are backpacking on a budget, consider staying at Hope Homes. a few kilometers from Alona Beach. It is one the cheapest places I found – and it comes with a free motorbike! They are not terribly friendly, but I suppose you get what you pay for. Don’t worry, if a luxury resort is what you’re after, keep reading…it’s coming!

Renting tips: Make sure you have a drivers license, and always wear a helmet. It’s a good idea to inspect your bike and go over any previous damage with the owner (take photos even), so you can prove that you weren’t the one who damaged it. I’ve never had a problem with dishonest renters so far, though.

Once I made it through the mild traffic of Tagbilaran City, my first stop was Alburquerque Church. There are many beautiful and historic churches in Bohol, so if that interests you, I recommend searching for some local blogs on the subject. They are very helpful.

Loboc River

Next, I ventured north to the tranquil Loboc River. Here, you can take cruise in a floating restaurant, but I just went straight to Nipa Hut Village (pictured below), where I had a cottage waiting for me. I loved this place. It’s nothing too fancy…just a quiet, rustic property along the river. It was just what I was looking for.

Chocolate Hills

The next morning, I woke up and continued to the Chocolate Hills, pictured above. These grass-covered limestone mounds turn brown during the dry summer months, hence the “chocolate” appearance. Quite unique! I recommend going on a sunny day if at all possible. 

Tarsier Sanctuary

On the way back to Panglao, I stopped at the fascinating Tarsier Sanctuary. This species can only be found in the Philippines, and has the largest eye-to-body ratio of any mammal. They can also turn their heads a full 180 degrees, which is just as creepy as it is awesome!

Bohol Beach Club

Staying here was so epic! I haven’t been to Hawaii, but I imagine it’s a bit like this….

I love the open feel of the place, and all the coconut trees. Plus, this is hands down the best beach I saw anywhere in Panglao. However, the most memorable part of Bohol Beach Club wasthe service. I am a full-time traveler, and I pay a lot of attention to this stuff.

In the Philippines, I try to help properties raise the bar, so that tourism in the country will become more globally competitive. That way, along with the economy, local communities should also begin to benefit. Well, Bohol Beach Club is already doing a fantastic job. The property is well maintained, food was quite good, and for me, most importantly, the bedding was heavenly. Haha.

I have to admit, the other reason I loved this place so much was because of the dolphin watching tour and diving trips I signed up for. Check out Pamalican and Balicasag Islands! Ask for kuya Edgar as your divemaster – he was such a great guy. My full post can be found here.

Momo Beach House

Tucked away on the other side of Panglao, Momo Beach House seems to be in a league of its own. It has an elegant, rustic charm – unlike any hotel I’ve ever experienced. “Beach-y” really is the best way to describe it…and it is indeed “homey” as well.

Momo is not the nicest beach I’ve ever walked along, but again…it’s charming. It reminds me of the local communities along the beach in Corong Corong, El Nido…and I think it’s a great location for sunrise photos.

If you’re adventurous enough (and have your own gear), snorkel out directly in front of the property and turn left when you’re about 4 meters deep. Then snorkel toward the stone structure sticking out into the water. Along the reef wall there, I saw some of the most colorful and fish and corals I’ve seen anywhere! Not many people know about it:)

The service at Momo Beach house is also great, and in general, the food in the restaurant was the best I had anywhere in Bohol. My compliments to the chef! The lightly-fried chicken and veggies, pictured above, was scrumptious. Momo is the kind of place I could see myself staying a longggg time. Haha. Highly, highly recommended.

Amorita Resort – Alona Beach

If you’re looking for a sleek, luxurious island getaway, Amorita is the place for you. Many resorts in the Philippines are owned by foreigners, but I’m happy to say that Amorita is Filipino owned.

One of the great things is that you will enjoy your peace and quiet, but can easily walk down the stairs to soak up some of the action on busy Alona Beach below.

The property is quite large, and the architecture and landscaping is truly beautiful. There are sweeping views of the beach and sea from up here, and the infinity pool (pictured further below) is the perfect place to experience them.

I found that my room was so sleek and comfortable that it was hard to leave! However, Amorita’s breakfast buffet was just what I needed to get me on my feet. You’ll have an incredible sunset view near the infinite pool, so keep in mind that is an ideal place to enjoy dinner or drinks.

Everywhere you go, the staff will greet you warmly. Next time I’d like to try a massage at the spa! It looked inviting. My full post can be found here.

Bluewater Resort

Bluewater is a sprawling property with a few impressive swimming pools, a well manicured garden, and bright and cheery rooms…that somehow still feel sophisticated. Along with the wonderful service (high-end hotels in Bohol seem to have cornered this market!), the highlight for me was definitely the design of the room.

The bright red accents and native inspired designs are surprisingly classy, and the skylight over the bathtub is an elegant and dramatic touch. Add to that the “floating” cantilever beds, and you’ll see why I loved my room so much! Very well done.

I’m not sure Bluewater is particularly known for their food, but I did try Halang Halang, which I heard was a local Boholano specialty. It a spicy blend of chicken, coconut milk, hot pepper, and lemongrass. So delicious! I highly recommend it.

Another unexpected find was the marine sanctuary directly in front of the resort beach. I spent an  hour or two snorkeling in the water there, it’s pretty nice! One last thing to note: Bluewater is great for those with kids. They will have a blast here.

Anda Beach

If you’re really feeling adventurous, you can ride or bus 4 hours from Panglao to Anda Beach, It’s just as nice as Alona, but without the crowds. If you need, you can stay at Richem Pension Hauz (in Valencia) on the way. They offer quality fan and aircon rooms at very affordable prices. +63 926 864 4008 . Once at Anda Beach, check out Anda Lodge for similar pricing…it’s across from the public market.

Tip 1: The cheap carinderia (eatery) next to the market is among the very best I experienced anywhere in the country!

Tip 2: For a unique dining experience, check out Coco Loco restaurant nearby…you can try a veggie hamburger with a patty made from coconut! It’s pretty good, too. Wash it down with a Filipino craft beer…it’s amazing that you can find a place like this all the way out here!

Tip 3: Stop at Blue Star Dive Resort on the way to Anda Beach (it’s about 5kms away), and consider diving or snorkeling there. “Paradise Gardens” is considered one of the best snorkeling sites in Bohol, and you can swim out to it directly from the resort beach!

Budget Restaurant & Lodging Tips

There is a new native-style place called Alona Hammocks where backpackers can sleep in a provided hammock…it even includes a simple breakfast, and all for 200 pesos ($5USD). Near Amorita Resort Entrance.

Isis Bungalows and Thai Restaurant – At the other end of Alona Beach, they have a very friendly staff, affordable and delicious Thai food + BBQ, inexpensive mid-range lodging, and a rather unfortunate name. They’re not super budget rooms, but still a great value.

Other Alona restaurants to try: Sunset Grill – Mexican Food, owned by a Mexican-American (it’s legit), Giuseppe Pizzeria (pizza is also legit), and Lola Spanish Restaurant (!!). Chefs come from all over the world and get stuck on Panglao Island…lucky us:)
