<p>I explored for one month on this island. In all that time, my stay at this beachfront boutique resort was definitely the highlight of luxury and pampering. Here are photos and memories from my stay &#8211; my official <em>District Boracay Review</em>. </p>

<p class="has-text-align-center">By <a href="https://www.facebook.com/nathan.allen.14224/">Nathan Allen</a></p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><a href="https://thedistrictboracay.com/"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="405" height="720" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/pool-and-resort-exterior.jpg" alt="Pool and hotel exterior - The District Boracay Review" class="wp-image-3622" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/pool-and-resort-exterior.jpg 405w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/pool-and-resort-exterior-169x300.jpg 169w" sizes="(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px" /></a></figure></div>

<p>Located smack in the middle of famed &#8220;White Beach&#8221;, the resort is technically a part of station 2. You walk deep into the property (rather than lengthwise along the beach). The exteriors are clean and modern. The rooms have verandas that look out over the pool below. </p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Bedroom and Bathroom Photos</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="720" height="405" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/beds-in-the-room.jpg" alt="Beds and natural room light - The District Boracay Review" class="wp-image-3623" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/beds-in-the-room.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/beds-in-the-room-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure></div>

<p>There is plenty of natural light coming through the glass sliding door. Of course the blackout curtains provide plenty of relief if you had &#8220;a little too much fun&#8221; the night before. Haha. The bedding at this resort were undoubtedly the most comfortable I have ever experienced!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="720" height="405" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/bathroom-mirror-shot.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3624" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/bathroom-mirror-shot.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/bathroom-mirror-shot-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure></div>

<p>The bathroom design was also sleek and modern. Here I am taking a selfie in the mirror.</p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Personal Touches &#8211; My District Boracay Review</h2>

<p>Here&#8217;s one of many ways this property really stood out in my mind. I enjoyed these personalized, handwritten notes and thoughtful treats. From what I recall, the staff replaced them each time I left and the room was tidied up. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery aligncenter columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"><ul class="blocks-gallery-grid"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="720" height="405" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/handwritten-note-for-resort-guests.jpg" alt="Personal touch - a logo stamped personal note in envelope" data-id="3626" data-full-url="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/handwritten-note-for-resort-guests.jpg" data-link="https://idreamedofthis.com/the-perfect-getaway-the-district-boracay/handwritten-note-for-resort-guests/" class="wp-image-3626" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/handwritten-note-for-resort-guests.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/handwritten-note-for-resort-guests-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="720" height="480" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/bedise-treats-with-personalized-note.jpg" alt="wrapped sweets with written note" data-id="3625" data-full-url="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/bedise-treats-with-personalized-note.jpg" data-link="https://idreamedofthis.com/the-perfect-getaway-the-district-boracay/bedise-treats-with-personalized-note/" class="wp-image-3625" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/bedise-treats-with-personalized-note.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/bedise-treats-with-personalized-note-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure></li></ul></figure>

<p>The <em>staff</em> was incredibly consistent with their service. Everywhere I went, they would acknowledge me with a smile and a hand over their heart. It was a touching gesture, and was done in such a genuine fashion so as to never feel forced or gimmicky. Well done, team!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="720" height="405" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/excellent-service-from-staff.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3631" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/excellent-service-from-staff.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/excellent-service-from-staff-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure></div>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">Meals &amp; Menu Items From the Restaurant</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="720" height="405" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/desserts-and-pastries.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3628" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/desserts-and-pastries.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/desserts-and-pastries-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure></div>

<p>The selection of pastries and desserts were impressive! It was a buffet style breakfast, and I&#8217;d venture to say that this could be the best view I&#8217;ll ever have while eating a meal.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="405" height="720" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/tropical-beach-breakfast-.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3627" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/tropical-beach-breakfast-.jpg 405w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/tropical-beach-breakfast--169x300.jpg 169w" sizes="(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px" /></figure></div>

<p>Is there anything better than fresh fruit juice and mango overlooking one of the top rated tropical beaches in the world?</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="720" height="479" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/Fresh-Mango-by-tropical-beach.jpg" alt="Fresh, sliced mango on plate by the sea - The District Boracay Review" class="wp-image-3629" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Fresh-Mango-by-tropical-beach.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Fresh-Mango-by-tropical-beach-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure></div>

<p>When I think about the perfect beach, it has powdery, white sand, a warm, turquoise sea, and plenty of tall, idyllic coconut trees. <a href="https://idreamedofthis.com/2014/12/08/boracay-philippines-an-island-so-beautiful-it-might-just-break-the-internet/">Boracay&#8217;s White Beach</a> has them all!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="720" height="405" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/Beach-view-from-deck-The-District-Boracay-Review.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3630" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Beach-view-from-deck-The-District-Boracay-Review.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Beach-view-from-deck-The-District-Boracay-Review-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /><figcaption>Beach view from resort balcony</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Many of my Filipino friends don&#8217;t see coconut trees in such an exotic light. However, the ones that live in cold, western climates get it! </p>

<h2 class="has-text-align-center wp-block-heading">To The Beach! &#8211; My District Boracay Review</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="720" height="446" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/Lounging-in-the-beach-chairs-The-District-Boracay-Review.jpg.jpg" alt="Nathan Allen in beach chair - The District Boracay Review" class="wp-image-3632" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Lounging-in-the-beach-chairs-The-District-Boracay-Review.jpg.jpg 720w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Lounging-in-the-beach-chairs-The-District-Boracay-Review.jpg-300x186.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px" /></figure></div>

<p>Speaking of which, no self respecting tourist can stay on the island without lounging at the beach. Thankfully The District has some prime real estate here! I found myself a beach chair and got in some world class relaxation. The staff was attentive. They provided a soft towel &#8211; and made sure to keep me &#8220;hydrated&#8221; with some island cocktails. </p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="405" height="720" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/tropical-cocktail-served-on-beach-.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3633" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/tropical-cocktail-served-on-beach-.jpg 405w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/tropical-cocktail-served-on-beach--169x300.jpg 169w" sizes="(max-width: 405px) 100vw, 405px" /><figcaption>A &#8220;cherry on top&#8221; of this perfect experience</figcaption></figure></div>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="650" height="366" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/Night-exterior-and-resort-guests.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-3635" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Night-exterior-and-resort-guests.jpg 650w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Night-exterior-and-resort-guests-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 650px) 100vw, 650px" /></figure></div>

<p>Boracay is famous for its nightlife and partying. You&#8217;ll be pleased to know that the party is never far away, should you desire it. When the time comes for sleep, &#8220;rest&#8221; assured you&#8217;ll have the perfect, peaceful refuge just a stone&#8217;s throw away. </p>

<p>Thanks for quite a memorable stay ! That wraps up my District Boracay review. I certainly look forward to returning for another visit. I&#8217;m sure quite a bit has already changed at the resort and on the island. </p>

<p>About a year ago I was researching new places to explore in the Philippines.&nbsp; I came across a photo of Filipino blogger Melo Villareal &#8220;cooking&#8221; in giant pot. It was in a little-known <strong>province called Antique</strong>, and from then on, I knew I had to see this place for myself!</p>

<p>Found south of Boracay on the western side of <strong>Panay Island</strong>, the sleepy province of Antique provides many opportunities for adventure <em>and</em> relaxation &#8211; and all off the beaten path.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the province has some pretty good beaches, that&#8217;s not where Antique really shines &#8211; it&#8217;s more about the <strong>lush mountains, rice fields, cascading waterfalls</strong>, and <em>warm smiles from the people that call it home</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Oh yeah, that, and the unique experience of being &#8220;cooked&#8221; in a hot <strong>KAWA bath</strong>!&nbsp; In truth, it&#8217;s very relaxing after a good hike and chilly swim in Bugtong Bato Falls:)</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center">&nbsp;(Some of my favorite photos from Antique)</p>

<p>One of my favorite things about Antique is that it spans the the whole west coast of Panay island, so there are so many opportunities to photograph <strong><em>beautiful sunsets</em>.</strong>&nbsp; Walking barefoot in the mud with a stunning sunset over the rice paddies &#8211; that was was something I&#8217;ll never forget!&nbsp; I also loved how affordable food and accommodations were, and the fact that for some reason, mosquitoes in Antique don&#8217;t find me very delicious!&nbsp; Ohh how I loved that&#8230;anyhow, here is the story of Antique and I&#8230;</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="719" height="468" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/reflection-of-coconut-tree-silhouettes-sunset-over-the-rice-paddies-tibiao-antique-philippines.jpg" alt="Reflection of coconut tree silhouettes - Sunset over the rice paddies - TIbiao, Antique - Philippines" class="wp-image-634" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/reflection-of-coconut-tree-silhouettes-sunset-over-the-rice-paddies-tibiao-antique-philippines.jpg 719w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/reflection-of-coconut-tree-silhouettes-sunset-over-the-rice-paddies-tibiao-antique-philippines-300x195.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 719px) 100vw, 719px" /><figcaption>Coconut trees &#8211; sunset over the rice paddies</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>&#8220;Kkkruhayyyy!!!&#8221; my local guide Flord enthusiastically yells out upon my arrival.&nbsp; The language here is called &#8220;Kinaray-a&#8221;, and <em>kruhay</em> means <em>welcome</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Then he handed me a <em>packed schedule</em> of activities for the next three days of filming.&nbsp; Wait&#8230;<em>filming</em>?&nbsp;</p>

<p>It turns out ABS CBN&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>Rated K</strong>&#8221; crew was covering Antique &nbsp; on the same weekend, and they wanted to use footage of me exploring as well.&nbsp; I was hesitant at first, but <strong>life is like a river, I say&#8230;so you just go with the flow</strong>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The next morning we began touring the province to meet and dine with many of the provincial mayors.&nbsp; I want to thank all of them for their warmth and hospitality!&nbsp; We were even treated to a musical performance in one of their homes.</p>

<p>Later we attended a lively singing performance called <strong>&#8220;Istorya-Kanta Kinaray-a&#8221;.</strong>&nbsp; I was so happy that these two talented singers are working hard to promote and preserve the local Karay-a culture.&nbsp; The colorful young dancers added a nice dimension to the experience as well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kinaray-a is a fascinating language &#8211; and it&#8217;s quite descriptive!&nbsp; One very interesting example is how they have <em>3 different names</em> for male and female genitalia &#8211; depending on the age and development stage of the person in question!&nbsp; <strong>Kinaray-a is also one of the only Filipino languages I know of that has uses a &#8220;schwa&#8221; vowel sound</strong>.&nbsp; An example is the Cebuano word &#8216;hubog&#8217;, which in Kinaray-a would be pronounced &#8220;hubug&#8221; &#8211; except the &#8220;u&#8221; is pronounced like the English words &#8220;hug&#8221; or &#8220;bug&#8221;.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tibiao is known for its exciting <strong>eco-adventure park</strong>.&nbsp; The Tibiao River offers kayaking at all skill levels.&nbsp; After a brief kayaking session, I took a swim in the river to cool off.&nbsp; Then I explored the surrounding area a bit and met some very friendly locals.</p>

<p>After all the kayaking footage was finished, we began the beautiful, brief trek to <strong>Bugtong Bato Falls</strong>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The trail starts in the village of Tuno, where our presence cause many curious smiles.&nbsp; The scenery on the way to the falls was just stunning. Shown here are some <strong>rice terraces</strong> we passed along the way. Note: There are some other beautiful rice terraces that I didn&#8217;t have a chance to explore. Ask the locals!</p>

<p>We arrived at the falls, but had lunch&nbsp; waiting for us at Bugtong Bato Falls Inn (formerly Peter&#8217;s Lodge).&nbsp; I was so happy to finally have good <strong>Filipino food</strong> after being away in the States for so long!&nbsp;</p>

<p>Afterward, they filmed members of our group repelling down the falls, and I took a swim in the chilly water.&nbsp; Then I was finally ready for a soak in the hot <strong>kawa</strong>!&nbsp; What a day &#8211; and what a beautiful place!</p>

<p>Malalison (also known as Mararison) island is part of Culasi, and is just a short boat ride away.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We boarded the boat before sunrise, and first made our way toward far away <strong>Seco Island</strong> (in the process of being rehabilitated).&nbsp;</p>

<p>We hit some rain and rough water on the way.&nbsp; I fell asleep, but when I woke up, the skies had cleared up and the perfectly calm water looked like <em>glass!&nbsp;</em></p>

<p>To add to the magic of the moment, <strong><em>flying fish</em></strong> began to shoot out of the water and soar through the sky &#8211; I&#8217;ve never seen them before!</p>

<p>There are a few pretty good <strong>snorkeling sections</strong> with corals and fish.&nbsp; I saw a very large <strong>puffer fish</strong>, some <strong>clownfish</strong>, and a few <strong>lionfish</strong>, which was a first for me. &nbsp; Ask the locals where the best places to snorkel are.&nbsp; You will need to bring your own snorkel, mask, and fins.</p>

<p>The children of <strong>Malalison island</strong> (Culasi) are just adorable.&nbsp; They love to sing &#8211; and in fact prepared a special Karay-a (local language)&nbsp; version of the Frozen song &#8220;Let It Go&#8221; for us!&nbsp; A few of them took me on a hike over the of of the island. <p>I almost skipped Lambaklad fishing, but I&#8217;m so glad I didn&#8217;t&#8230;just look at what an incredible experience this was!&nbsp;</p>

<p>The name <strong>Lambaklad</strong> come from the word for &#8220;<em>net&#8221;</em> (lambat) and &#8220;<em>fish corral</em>&#8221; (baklad).&nbsp;</p>

<p>You can join the fisherman very early in the morning, or at 3pm in the afternoon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The tradition is to leave your tsinelas (flip flops) on the beach, wash your feet in the water, then board the giant bamboo raft.&nbsp; e words <em>lambat</em> (net) and <em>baklad</em> (fish corral).</p>

<p>As the name suggests, there is a large corral and net under the water.&nbsp; As far as I know, the fisherman slowly pull the net in, which brings the raft toward the fish, and pushes them into net.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Afterward, the fisherman take their share, and the rest is bought after a negotiation.&nbsp; I loved witnessing this!</p>

<p>I am very independent, and when I was told that I would have guides accompanying me to <strong>Igpasungaw Falls</strong> in Sebaste, I was a bit frustrated.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, this hike was MUCH more challenging and confusing than I thought, so the <strong>guides</strong> were actually very much appreciated!&nbsp; Go to the municipal hall in Sebaste to inquire about guides to this incredible place.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I learned that Antique got its name from &#8220;<strong>hantik</strong>&#8220;, which is the word for the <em>black ants</em> which can be found on Panay. Island&nbsp; Here at the falls, I put my hand down and was bitten by one! I always knew red ants bite, but I&#8217;ve never heard of black ants that do as well!&nbsp; You learn something every day, they say:)</p>

<p>On a last-minute trip to Nogas island in southern Antique, I was sidetracked by bad weather and instead ended up at the colorful <strong>Binirayan Festival</strong>.&nbsp; What an experience!&nbsp; This was a perfect reminder that “when one door closes, another opens”.<br><br>All the cities in the province came together to compete in the capital, San Jose.&nbsp; While I was quite impressed with all of the performances (I only witnessed 6, to be fair), two really caught my attention.&nbsp; <strong>Caluya</strong> and <strong>Sibalom</strong>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Wow, they really went all out!&nbsp; I was thankful to have a great view to take photos from the stage.&nbsp; I was seated next to the governor, and they announced that “I Dreamed Of This” was visiting.&nbsp; What an honor to be there.&nbsp; This festival is technically 29 days long, because you know, <strong>it really is more fun in the Philippines!</strong></p>

<p>Kasa Raya is a great <strong>budget option in Tibiao</strong>, and they recently even added aircon rooms.&nbsp; Conveniently located on the main road where the junction to Tuno and Bugtong Bato Falls is.&nbsp; There is a Petron station attached to the inn.&nbsp; The falls are just 5km away from here.</p>

<p>I have to be honest, I am friends with the nice little family that runs it, but you can feel better knowing that I <em>became friends</em> with them by staying here:)</p>

<p>I like the feel that the bamboo construction gives the place.&nbsp; The restaurant has a modest but solid menu with some great value options, and the budget rooms even come with breakfast!&nbsp;</p>

<p>I was particularly impressed by the lechon manok and fried chicken.&nbsp; They also serve a good brewed coffee.&nbsp; The best part is that you can enjoy your meal overlooking the rice fields out back.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Kasa Raya Traveller&#8217;s Inn and Resto</strong> (Tibiao) &#8211; Please see the listing above.&nbsp; They have some delicious and affordable options here.</li></ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>The Green Mug Coffee shop</strong> (Tibiao) &#8211; I love this place, because they have great coffee &#8211; <em>and</em> it&#8217;s <em>very</em> reasonably priced! &nbsp; I never understood why &#8220;real&#8221; coffee is so expensive in the Philippines &#8211; a coffee growing country!&nbsp; Haha.&nbsp; Anyhow, they have <strong>Americanos for 30 pesos, and lattes for just 50</strong>.&nbsp; Some very affordable food options as well!&nbsp; Hidden away location, so you may have to ask the local trike drivers.&nbsp;</li></ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Island Choice</strong> (Culasi) &#8211; I had a <em>very</em> affordable pizza here, and for the money, I was quite impressed!&nbsp; Also tried a buko shake, and that was good as well.&nbsp; Great prices and friendly service.&nbsp; Located in the city center.&nbsp;</li></ul>

<p>(Tip:&nbsp; I think there is an international ATM in San Jose (BPI, I believe), but as far as I know, there are no others around Antique. You might want to get cash in Iloilo, Caticlan, or Boracay if you are a foreigner)</p>

<p>Antique may have been over-hyped a bit in the past, <strong>but as long you&#8217;re realistic about what to expect, I think you&#8217;ll love it.</strong>&nbsp; If you go and experience some of my recommendations, please give me your feedback! I will update info in my listing if needed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thank you for an incredible, unforgettable experience, Antique.</p>

<p>Hope to see you again soon!</p>

<p>If you plan on visiting Panay island for the Dinagyang Festival, I suggest a side-trip to visit and photograph impressive <strong>Miagao Church</strong> &#8211; probably my favorite Spanish Church anywhere in the country!</p>

<p>I loved the clean air and shady, tree-lined streets here. In fact, I loved this place so much, I stayed for a whole month! Haha.</p>
</div></div>

<div style="height:15px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:15px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p>While there&#8217;s no doubt that the <strong>church</strong> is the center of attention, I found out that there&#8217;s more to Miagao than meets the eye&#8230;most notably, the local folklore! However, we&#8217;ll start with the church:)</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-8955750969">Miagao Church, or Fortress?</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="716" height="403" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/miagao-church-iloilo-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis.jpg" alt="miagao-church-iloilo-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis" class="wp-image-2460" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/miagao-church-iloilo-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis.jpg 716w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/miagao-church-iloilo-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px" /></figure></div>

<p>Yes, there&#8217;s definitely something <em>different</em> about Miagao Church&#8230;at one time it served as protection from the <em>Moros</em>, so that&#8217;s where the <strong>fortress-like construction</strong> comes from. It also has some <em>distinctly Filipino</em> relief carvings&#8230;a depiction of St. Christopher carrying Christ as a baby, under the protection of a <em>coconut tree</em>.</p>

<p>Miagao Church is currently listed as a <strong>UNESCO</strong> <strong>world heritage site</strong>, as part of the <em>baroque churches of the Philippines.</em></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-8957134269">Let The Stories Begin&#8230;</h2>

<p>The locals told me many stories in Miagao. The first was how the town came together to convince a well-loved doctor to run for mayor. They were ready for <em>a change</em>, and against all odds, used the power of the Internet to unite and get him elected. After 30 years of the previous political family, <em>change had finally come</em> to Miagao. This is the story I heard, anyway.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-8955828069">Christ The King Procession</h2>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="716" height="403" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/miagao-church-altar-iloilo-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis.jpg" alt="Church Altar - MIagao Travel guide - Iloilo, Philippines © Nathan Allen via @idreamedofthis" class="wp-image-3504" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/miagao-church-altar-iloilo-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis.jpg 716w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/miagao-church-altar-iloilo-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px" /><figcaption>Miagao Church Altar &amp; Interior</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>The current mayor (at the time of writing), &#8220;Doc&#8221; Napulan, learned of my arrival, and was very kind to invite me to join him during the <strong><em>Christ The King</em> <em>Procession</em></strong> through town. This was a great way to explore and take photos, and having a knowledgeable guide like Mayor Napulan along the way was a nice bonus!</p>

<p>The procession started at the church, and slowly wound its way through town from there. I loved hearing bits and pieces about the history as we went, and seeing the altars that were placed in front of many of the houses.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-8955697169">The Legends of the &#8220;Bat Castle&#8221; and “Golden Ship”</h2>

<p>Are they just myths? <em>Who knows</em>&#8230;but this is what I heard:</p>

<p>Behind the municipal hall (ask a local), you can find the “<strong>Bat Castle</strong>”, which is actually just a large tree where <em>thousands</em> of giant fruit bats sleep each day. Around sunset, they begin their departure to hunt for food…and cover almost every square meter of sky!</p>

<p>It is called a “castle”, because supposedly a beautiful actress came to Iloilo one day, and took a cab all the way to Miagao. When the taxi driver dropped her off behind the municipal hall, he was surprised to receive a crisp 50 US dollar bill as payment &#8211; with &#8220;no need to give change&#8221;.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-gallery aligncenter columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-16 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex"><ul class="blocks-gallery-grid"><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="250" height="400" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/Golden-Crowned-Lying-Foxes-Miagao-Philippines-©-Nathan-Allen-via-@idreamedofthis.jpg" alt="Golden Crowned Lying Foxes - Miagao, Philippines © Nathan Allen via @idreamedofthis" data-id="2471" data-full-url="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/Golden-Crowned-Lying-Foxes-Miagao-Philippines-©-Nathan-Allen-via-@idreamedofthis.jpg" data-link="https://idreamedofthis.com/golden-crowned-lying-foxes-miagao-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis/" class="wp-image-2471" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Golden-Crowned-Lying-Foxes-Miagao-Philippines-©-Nathan-Allen-via-@idreamedofthis.jpg 250w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/Golden-Crowned-Lying-Foxes-Miagao-Philippines-©-Nathan-Allen-via-@idreamedofthis-188x300.jpg 188w" sizes="(max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px" /></figure></li><li class="blocks-gallery-item"><figure><img decoding="async" width="711" height="400" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/The-Bat-Castle-Tree-Miagao-Philippines-©-Nathan-Allen-via-@idreamedofthis.jpg" alt="The &quot;Bat Castle&quot; Tree - Miagao, Philippines © Nathan Allen via @idreamedofthis" data-id="2481" data-full-url="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/The-Bat-Castle-Tree-Miagao-Philippines-©-Nathan-Allen-via-@idreamedofthis.jpg" data-link="https://idreamedofthis.com/the-bat-castle-tree-miagao-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis/" class="wp-image-2481" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Bat-Castle-Tree-Miagao-Philippines-©-Nathan-Allen-via-@idreamedofthis.jpg 711w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/The-Bat-Castle-Tree-Miagao-Philippines-©-Nathan-Allen-via-@idreamedofthis-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 711px) 100vw, 711px" /></figure></li></ul></figure>

<p>When he looked out the window, he was also surprised to see a beautiful <strong>mansion</strong> there. Later, when he told his friends the story, they all laughed at him, because they took him back and showed him there’s nothing there but a big tree full of bats. To this day, the tree is said to be <em>enchanted</em>, and nobody would dare harm it.&nbsp;<br></p>

<p>As for the bats, these harmless creatures can only be found in the Philippines, and are actually called <strong>&#8220;Golden-Crowned Flying Foxes&#8221;.</strong> They are quite large, and only eat fruit. They are <em>endangered, and i</em>f this area becomes a tourist draw, I do hope the local Government will do everything possible to protect them.</p>

<p>“<strong>The Golden Ship</strong>” is another legend. It has reportedly been seen by locals over the years…strangely enough, floating down the small creek that flows through a tunnel at <strong>Sulu Garden restaurant</strong>. It’s worth a visit to Sulu Garden just for the fish spa and atmosphere of the place &#8211; whether you see the ship or not! The food is decent, but for me the highlight was the beautiful garden.<br></p>

<p>You wouldn’t think you would find an eclectic “bed and breakfast” inside a college dorm, but at “<strong>St. Mike’s</strong>”, indeed you can! Sir Mike and his wife “Mama Nora” are well-loved by the students, and it’s easy to see why. They fill the place with a warm energy, and good, cheap carinderia food.</p>

<p>They are avid art collectors, and even if you’re not hungry, the restaurant is worth a visit just to see the <strong>artifacts and collectibles</strong> that decorate the walls!</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="716" height="403" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/statues-artifacts-st-mike-s-dorm-miagao-travel-guide-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis.jpg" alt="statues-artifacts-st-mike-s-dorm-miagao travel guide -philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis.jpg" class="wp-image-2487" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/statues-artifacts-st-mike-s-dorm-miagao-travel-guide-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis.jpg 716w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/statues-artifacts-st-mike-s-dorm-miagao-travel-guide-philippines-nathan-allen-via-idreamedofthis-300x169.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 716px) 100vw, 716px" /><figcaption>Statues and relics @ St. Mike&#8217;s Dorm</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Note: Many of these items are for sale. The guest rooms have aircon, and are also decorated with an eclectic mix. I believe they recently opened a giant, bamboo bar and dance hall as well! I snapped a few pics before it was finished. Ask them about it! You have to take a small path to get to St. Mike&#8217;s from the main road, so go inside <em>Balay Lampirong</em> or the other dorms and ask where it is.</p>

<p>I also visited the &#8220;<strong>Green Bamboo</strong>&#8221; Project. Bamboo grows so quickly, and it quite strong&#8230;.I believe bamboo construction could really ease a lot of the strain put on our environment! This UPV project helps to employ locals who process the bamboo. You can purchase bamboo crafts on site.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="358" height="537" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/nerizens-batchoy-with-flord-calawag-the-man-the-myth-or-the-man-of-myths-miagao-travel-guide.jpg" alt="Nerizens Batchoy with Flord Calawag - The man, the myth...or the man OF myths? :) Miagao Travel Guide" class="wp-image-2489" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/nerizens-batchoy-with-flord-calawag-the-man-the-myth-or-the-man-of-myths-miagao-travel-guide.jpg 358w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/nerizens-batchoy-with-flord-calawag-the-man-the-myth-or-the-man-of-myths-miagao-travel-guide-200x300.jpg 200w" sizes="(max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px" /></figure></div>

<p>Now for the eating &amp; drinking portion of Miagao travel guide&#8230;try Miagao&#8217;s <em>own</em> Batchoy at a local favorite &#8211; <strong>Nerizens</strong>! On the way to or from Iloilo, you can also stop by <strong>Doming’s Talabahan</strong> by the sea! You can have a large bowl of talaba (fresh oysters) for almost nothing! Iloilo is famous for this at places like <strong>Breakthrough</strong> and <strong>Tatoy’s</strong>, but not too many people know about this gem just outside of the city:)<br></p>

<p><strong>&#8220;Vineyard&#8221;</strong><br></p>

<p>I’ll let you in on a little UPV secret: There is a super cheap, <em>hole in the wall</em> <strong>cocktail bar</strong> right near the church! It’s called &#8220;<strong>Vineyard</strong>&#8220;, and you may have to ask the locals where it is. They have some very unique mixed drink creations there…I never expected to find something like that in Miagao! There&#8217;s an outdoor patio, and the UPV students love it. I almost expected I would have to give a secret handshake or password to enter. Haha.<br></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-8956094369">How To Get To Miag-Ao</h2>

<p>If coming from Boracay or Antique by bus, you will reach Miagao about 45 minutes before you arrive in Iloilo City. Don&#8217;t worry, you won&#8217;t miss the imposing structure of <strong>Miagao</strong> <strong>church</strong>! Haha. From Iloilo, you need to take 2 jeepneys, but unfortunately I can&#8217;t remember which ones and from where. Hopefully somebody will answer this here on the post, but you can always ask the drivers when in Iloilo.</p>

<p>Thanks so much to fellow photographer <em>Ruperto Quitag</em>, who assisted me quite a bit there in Miagao. Big thanks as well to Mayor Napulan, Flord Calawag, Veronica Melanio, Mama Nora, and Sir Mike! Being there in Miagao was just the rest and relaxation I needed at the time. I was actually invited to give a <strong>TEDx</strong> talk at UPV, and I regret not being able to. Next time, I guess! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/16.0.1/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>
