 Foodie?  Nature Lover?  You’ve Just Met Your Match…

About a year ago, the media posted my letter to a Polish blogger: “In defense of Filipino food“.  At the top of my list of favorites?  Bicolano cuisine, and “pinangat” from Albay, to be exact.  However, originally I didn’t come here for the food…that was just a bonus.  I had come for a glimpse of the world’s most “perfect cone” volcano – awe-inspiring Mt. Mayon!

 Seriously, I think everybody should see Mt. Mayon at least once in their lifetime.  

Albay is part of the Bicol region, in the eastern Philippines.  Along with English and Filipino (Tagalog), people here speak their own language called Bicol.  “Magayon” is the Bicol word for “beautiful”, and it is the word from which “Mayon” is derived.

As you can see below, there was no shortage of things for me to experience here…people come from all over the world to photograph and climb Mt. Mayon, but you can also take a thrilling ATV ride up as far as half way!  Lignon Hill and Cagsawa Ruins (below) are popular tourist destinations to take pictures of Mayon  as well.

Albay is a very progressive and forward-thinking province, with many environmental, tourism, and safety awards under its belt.    It is the first place I visited in the Philippines where people seemed to be proud of their government officials.  They talk about Governor Joey Salceda as if he was a close friend of theirs!

“Gov” (as they call him), seems to have done a great job bridging the gap between the people and the government – no easy feat in the Philippines!

Relaxing at Vera Falls

Need to cool off?  Vera Falls in Malinao is the perfect place to swim and take photos. I was impressed by the local caretaker’s dedication to  keeping the area clean and safe. If waterfalls are your thing, also be sure to check out Busay Falls in Malilipot!  (ABS-CBN did some promotion for Albay and interviewed me here.  Thanks Jose, Jonathan + team!) 

In Albay I saw how some local products are made: “Manila Hemp” from Abaca (in Camalig), Ceramics (in Tiwi), pinangat (@ Zeny’s in Camalig), and Guinobatan longganisa (@ Yangmatt’s in Guinobatan)

You can get “hands on” experience by making them all yourself!

Island-Hopping

Albay isn’t particularly known for beaches, but you can also go island-hopping with Love Boat Tours and experience Guinanayan Island in Rapu Rapu (pictured below)!  Relax, swim – all with a distant view of Mt. Mayon.   Enjoy a “boodle fight” for lunch, which is many local food dishes served “family style”…without plates or utensils – on one giant banana leaf! 

Itinerary For The ULTIMATE Albay Experience

How to get to Legazpi: Overnight bus (Cubao) or 1 hour flight from Manila.  Arrive early in the morning.  Do not miss the affordable and delicious breakfast buffet directly inside the airport!  Take a trike to nearby Lignon Hill (they can bring you up, but it’s beautiful, and many young people like to walk it).  If you’re still hungry, don’t miss Charisma’s eatery near the entry gate.

Take a trike to Cagsawa Ruins to explore and take photos.  Ask where nearby Bicol Adventure ATV is. This tour is a bit pricey, but is a lot of fun!  ATVs are much more stable and easy to ride than motorbikes.  My ride was a bit rainy at the end, but it cooled me off and was a blast – rain or shine!  Note: if you don’t want to do the ATV tour, consider going direct from the airport to Daraga Church, then Lignon Hill on the way to Cagsawa.

1st Colonial Grill – For lunch, take a trike to 1st Colonial Grill in Daraga.  Bicolano cuisine is famous for its use of spicy chilis (locally known as “sili”, and coconut milk.  1st Colonial Grill even features “chili ice cream” (which I thought was surprisingly good), but there are many other unique flavors as well!  I enjoyed another local product, the pili nut flavor (also try the pili bread!). 

Bahay Kubo Salad – There is a very famous song in the Philippines called “Bahay Kubo”, which means traditional Filipino house.  In the song, all of the vegetables growing in the garden are sung.  1st Colonial Grill created a salad with all those ingredients, and it’s really quite good (pictured above)! 

Camalig Pinangat

Next, take a trike to the Legazpi bus terminal, and ask where the jeepney to Camalig is.  You may have to wait until the jeepney fills up.  Make sure the driver knows that you want to get off in Camalig, about 25 minutes away. When you arrive, ask for Zeny’s pinangat at many of the eateries along the highway..  Also consider Dad’s Special Pinangat.  Pinangat is made with gabi (taro) leaves, chili, meat, and coconut milk.  There is really nothing like it! 

Also ask a local where Camalig church is, because there are some beautiful photo opportunities there with Mt. Mayon.  There is a fascinating cemetery on the side as well.

Guinobatan Longganisa

A bit further down the jeepney route is Guinobatan, which is famous for its bite-sized longganisa (sausages)…you can visit Yangmatt’s famous eatery for a taste (and possible demo of how it’s made!) You might need to have a local point you to the exact location.  Try the lechon, too!

While you’re in the area, consider taking a trike to La Hacienda Spring and Nature Resort for a relaxing swim (pictured further down)!  There is also a nice pool at Charisma Hotel and Catering House.

Oriental Hotel For Dinner

If you still have the energy,  head back to Legazpi on a jeepney, and take a trike to the Oriental Hotel for dinner and an incredible Mayon / sunset view.  Order a burger or calamares (or both!) for the best combination of taste and value:)

Digging a Little Deeper…

Of course, there’s SO MUCH MORE to Albay than just what I’ve mentioned above…

If you have more time to peel away the layers of Albay, you will be handsomely rewarded!

Tabaco City – the “pedicab capital of the Philippines”

Don’t miss one of my favorite places in Albay!  Tabaco is a city of great charm and character – the people are very warm and friendly, and there is a lot of bustling nightlife (+ street food!).  Here you can take a ferry to the rugged island province of Catanduanes.  Until 1945, Catanduanes was actually a part of Albay!

As for Tabaco, though, consider having an affordable pizza or burger at Grazianos Italian Restaurant.  Afterward, take a special trike trip halfway up the volcano to the stunning views at Mayon Resthouse. Then have dinner at Martha’s Kitchen, which in my opinion, is the best that Albay has to offer.  Their to-die-for Bicol Express is pictured below.

Continuing To Sorsogon

Another very epic Bicol adventure would be to spend 1 or 2 days in Albay as listed above, then head south to spend the night at the captivating Siama Hotel.

Spend at least 24 hours at the hotel, then continue south to Donsol, Sorsogon, where you can swim with the world-famous whale sharks!  If you could squeeze in a island hopping trip to Juag Lagoon and stunning Subic Beach, Matnog afterward, that really would be an unforgettable experience!

Sto. Domingo – This small, award-winning town has the only plaza in the Philippines that features a statue of Andres Bonafacio instead of the default national hero, Jose Rizal.  The Filipino chismis (gossip) is that it’s because Bonafacio fathered an illegitimate child here.

It’s impossible to fit all that I want to in this blog, but here are a few more experiences if you have time: Dessert at Balay Cena Una heritage house (Daraga), sushi rolls @ IshiAya’s Japanese fusion (Tabaco), Seafood at Layag (Legazpi), and exploring at Huyup Huyupan Cave or Quitinday Green Hills Nature Park (Camalig).  If you happen to be arriving in April, check out the Daragang Magayon festival!

The Oriental Hotel Legazpi  – This hotel is one of Albay’s pride and joys.  If luxury is what you’re after, you’ll get it…along with sweeping views of the surrounding areas!  It pays to book online for the best prices.  Budget-minded people might stop here for lunch, dinner, or views only.  More info HERE

2. Hotel St. Ellis (Legazpi) – Travelers agree, this place is a great value.  Decor is beautiful and modern, free breakfast buffet is excellent (can’t remember if pancakes are included, but I’ve eaten them there and loved them!).  Right in city center, and it has a pool:)  More info HERE

3. Casablanca Suites (Legazpi) – New hotel with a nice breakfast included.  Great central location and access to restaurants nearby.  View of Mt. Mayon and Lignon Hill from some rooms.  More info HERE

4. Ellis Ecotel (Legazpi) – The best option for affordable privacy.  Located in Embarcadero, so it’s good for shopping / Legazpi Boulevard nightlife.  More info HERE

Unforgettable…That’s What You Are.

The provincial government was a big help to me during visit here, and I’m very grateful for that.  I spoke to other foreigners in the Philippines who agree – no matter how long we stay here, we still can’t get over the sheer size and inescapable beauty of Mt. Mayon. 

To say that the food, the people, and the places in Albay had an impact on me is an understatement…in fact, I spent so much time in this region that I find myself answering people in Bicol – even when I’m in other countries!  Haha.

Yes, Albay has a lot to offer – and a lot to be proud of.

What an unexpected surprise to find this yearly festival in the Philippines – please enjoy my Masbate Rodeo photos below…

So The Philippines Has a Rodeo

I have to be honest. I am from the U.S…from the state that held the world’s first rodeo over a hundred years ago. This does not make me some kind of immediate expert, but I know a genuine cowboy when I see one. When I heard there was a rodeo in the Philippines, I just imagined a bunch of Filipinos wearing cowboy boots and hats for show.

I mean, how could there be real cowboys in Asia?

I only mention this to show how ignorant I really was…because when I arrived at the rodeo, I realized that these guys are not playing around! This is serious business, and these Filipino cowboys are tough!

Yup. Filipino Cowboys are 100% Legit

Cowgirl Competitions Include BULL RIDING.

You read that right. Rodeo Masbateño has some of the only female bull riders in the world! Of course, they also participate in the lassoing, calf-wrestling, and bullwhipping competitions as well. Clearly, these are not women to mess with.

A Link To Home

The world’s first rodeo was held on July 4th, 1888 – in Prescott, Arizona. Who would have thought that, on a tropical island out in the Pacific Ocean, I would find a direct link back to this small U.S. town…a town my family is actually from, and where we spent our childhoods?It’s no wonder I felt so at-home here in Masbate.

The Competitions – Man Vs. Beast

Your heart really races as you watch these competitions! It seems that man and beast take turns showing each other who’s boss. The first photo seems to show that man has the upper hand…the second shows that he’s about to get the horns! Challenging these bulls is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

The Cattle Drive…and “Kapitan Du”

While trying to find a good place to take pictures during the cattle drive, a friendly local waved me down and told me I should visit his house nearby. Of course I agreed – it’s part of the magic of travel! You never know who you’ll meet – or where you’ll end up.

“Kapitan Du”, as he is known, is a local artist with an eclectic mix of odds and ends decorating his home. There is even a rabbit running loose there! Truly a one-of-a-kind, his place is located near the cattle pen where the run starts. I’m sure you can ask just about any local about him – he seems like the kind of guy everybody knows!

If you’re hungry, make sure you check out “Ham’s Cup” coffee shop nearby! It really is a hidden gem in Masbate! Foodies will love it.

The cattle drive itself is quite thrilling. The crowds line up along the sides of the road, and the cowboys herd the cattle by on horseback. You never know what will happen…sometimes the bulls get confused and start charging toward the audience, or just turn around and run backwards! They put on quite a show, and the audience loves every minute of it.

Mess With the Bull, Get the Horns

Being a photographer, sometimes I’m not paying enough attention while I try to get the best shots. A few times I put myself in front of a charging bull and had to dive out of the way just in time!

Grand Rodeo Festival Parade

The parade is a lot of fun, but make sure you bring sunblock or an umbrella to keep the sun off you. There aren’t too many foreign visitors at the rodeo yet, so the locals seemed very happy to have a guest from out-of-town. I really loved the warmth and hospitality of Masbateños!

Cowboy Culture in the Philippines

The “cowboy culture” in Masbate is not just for show…being here really is like visiting the scenic ranches of the American west. The people live and breathe this “western” lifestyle…it is very much a part of who they are. From the minute I stepped off the boat in Masbate, it was cowboy hats, boots, and belt buckles as far as the eye can see!

The rodeo even has its own catchy theme song (“Rodeo Masbateño”), and you’ll hear it everywhere you go!

It’s difficult to find much history about Masbate online, but Governor Vince Revil told me that the cattle was originally given to the Philippines as reparations by the U.S. government. These days, it is commonplace for Masbate youth to grow up riding horses and tending cattle. This shatters all my preconceived notions about life in the Philippines!

Rodeo Activities and Information

The Masbate Rodeo is held every year in mid-April, though the kick-off ceremonies and carnival rides start in late March.

There are many different events and activities each year, so make sure you search for an updated rodeo schedule to plan accordingly.

For me, the highlights were the bull riding, cattle wrestling, and bullwhip competitions. I hear the Street Barn Dance is also popular.

Make sure you check out the live music, food, and drinks at the rodeo saloon / beer plaza.

Masbate has their own spicy black bean version of Adobo, the Filipino favorite. Also be sure to try lechon baka, or slow-roasted beef. Manamit (delicious), as the locals say!

Most people would never expect to find authentic cowboy culture in the Philippines, but  they might also be surprised to learn that Masbate also has (in my opinion) some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! It is also known for being the football (soccer) capital of the Philippines.

Yes, there are powdery white-sand beaches, but there are also opportunities for dolphin watching, incredible diving, caving, and countryside tours. 

Located in the heart of the Philippines, Bohol is accessible via a direct flight to Tagbilaran from Manila, the country’s capital.  

Pronounced boh-Hole (emphasis on the big H), the island was the site of the very first international peace treaty between the local datu (king), and the Spanish conquistadors.

Boholano people are known to be very warm and friendly, and as you can see, the island they call home is nothing short of spectacular.

Sunrise at Bohol Beach Club, Panglao Island.

Panglao island is where most of the hotels and restaurants are located….it’s about 30 minutes from the airport by taxi or “tricycle” (local transportation). It is connected to the mainland of Bohol by a bridge. FYI: If you’re staying in a resort, they will often provide a shuttle to pick you up. 

Alona Beach

A very popular tourist destination on Panglao island. Here you can find island hopping and dolphin watching tours. While not as crowded as Boracay (its cousin to the west), Panglao can definitely get crowded during the Filipino summer months of March to May…and also during Holy Week each year.

Snorkeling near Momo Beach House, I came across these incredible corals!

Please note: Wearing sunblock with the chemical “oxybenzone” or “Benzophenone-3” kills these beautiful  coral reefs!

Countryside Tour by Motorbike

Of course, there will be countless touts on the beach that will arrange guided tours for a fee, but I always love the adventure of renting my own bike and exploring at my own pace.

If you are backpacking on a budget, consider staying at Hope Homes. a few kilometers from Alona Beach. It is one the cheapest places I found – and it comes with a free motorbike! They are not terribly friendly, but I suppose you get what you pay for. Don’t worry, if a luxury resort is what you’re after, keep reading…it’s coming!

Renting tips: Make sure you have a drivers license, and always wear a helmet. It’s a good idea to inspect your bike and go over any previous damage with the owner (take photos even), so you can prove that you weren’t the one who damaged it. I’ve never had a problem with dishonest renters so far, though.

Once I made it through the mild traffic of Tagbilaran City, my first stop was Alburquerque Church. There are many beautiful and historic churches in Bohol, so if that interests you, I recommend searching for some local blogs on the subject. They are very helpful.

Loboc River

Next, I ventured north to the tranquil Loboc River. Here, you can take cruise in a floating restaurant, but I just went straight to Nipa Hut Village (pictured below), where I had a cottage waiting for me. I loved this place. It’s nothing too fancy…just a quiet, rustic property along the river. It was just what I was looking for.

Chocolate Hills

The next morning, I woke up and continued to the Chocolate Hills, pictured above. These grass-covered limestone mounds turn brown during the dry summer months, hence the “chocolate” appearance. Quite unique! I recommend going on a sunny day if at all possible. 

Tarsier Sanctuary

On the way back to Panglao, I stopped at the fascinating Tarsier Sanctuary. This species can only be found in the Philippines, and has the largest eye-to-body ratio of any mammal. They can also turn their heads a full 180 degrees, which is just as creepy as it is awesome!

Bohol Beach Club

Staying here was so epic! I haven’t been to Hawaii, but I imagine it’s a bit like this….

I love the open feel of the place, and all the coconut trees. Plus, this is hands down the best beach I saw anywhere in Panglao. However, the most memorable part of Bohol Beach Club wasthe service. I am a full-time traveler, and I pay a lot of attention to this stuff.

In the Philippines, I try to help properties raise the bar, so that tourism in the country will become more globally competitive. That way, along with the economy, local communities should also begin to benefit. Well, Bohol Beach Club is already doing a fantastic job. The property is well maintained, food was quite good, and for me, most importantly, the bedding was heavenly. Haha.

I have to admit, the other reason I loved this place so much was because of the dolphin watching tour and diving trips I signed up for. Check out Pamalican and Balicasag Islands! Ask for kuya Edgar as your divemaster – he was such a great guy. My full post can be found here.

Momo Beach House

Tucked away on the other side of Panglao, Momo Beach House seems to be in a league of its own. It has an elegant, rustic charm – unlike any hotel I’ve ever experienced. “Beach-y” really is the best way to describe it…and it is indeed “homey” as well.

Momo is not the nicest beach I’ve ever walked along, but again…it’s charming. It reminds me of the local communities along the beach in Corong Corong, El Nido…and I think it’s a great location for sunrise photos.

If you’re adventurous enough (and have your own gear), snorkel out directly in front of the property and turn left when you’re about 4 meters deep. Then snorkel toward the stone structure sticking out into the water. Along the reef wall there, I saw some of the most colorful and fish and corals I’ve seen anywhere! Not many people know about it:)

The service at Momo Beach house is also great, and in general, the food in the restaurant was the best I had anywhere in Bohol. My compliments to the chef! The lightly-fried chicken and veggies, pictured above, was scrumptious. Momo is the kind of place I could see myself staying a longggg time. Haha. Highly, highly recommended.

Amorita Resort – Alona Beach

If you’re looking for a sleek, luxurious island getaway, Amorita is the place for you. Many resorts in the Philippines are owned by foreigners, but I’m happy to say that Amorita is Filipino owned.

One of the great things is that you will enjoy your peace and quiet, but can easily walk down the stairs to soak up some of the action on busy Alona Beach below.

The property is quite large, and the architecture and landscaping is truly beautiful. There are sweeping views of the beach and sea from up here, and the infinity pool (pictured further below) is the perfect place to experience them.

I found that my room was so sleek and comfortable that it was hard to leave! However, Amorita’s breakfast buffet was just what I needed to get me on my feet. You’ll have an incredible sunset view near the infinite pool, so keep in mind that is an ideal place to enjoy dinner or drinks.

Everywhere you go, the staff will greet you warmly. Next time I’d like to try a massage at the spa! It looked inviting. My full post can be found here.

Bluewater Resort

Bluewater is a sprawling property with a few impressive swimming pools, a well manicured garden, and bright and cheery rooms…that somehow still feel sophisticated. Along with the wonderful service (high-end hotels in Bohol seem to have cornered this market!), the highlight for me was definitely the design of the room.

The bright red accents and native inspired designs are surprisingly classy, and the skylight over the bathtub is an elegant and dramatic touch. Add to that the “floating” cantilever beds, and you’ll see why I loved my room so much! Very well done.

I’m not sure Bluewater is particularly known for their food, but I did try Halang Halang, which I heard was a local Boholano specialty. It a spicy blend of chicken, coconut milk, hot pepper, and lemongrass. So delicious! I highly recommend it.

Another unexpected find was the marine sanctuary directly in front of the resort beach. I spent an  hour or two snorkeling in the water there, it’s pretty nice! One last thing to note: Bluewater is great for those with kids. They will have a blast here.

Anda Beach

If you’re really feeling adventurous, you can ride or bus 4 hours from Panglao to Anda Beach, It’s just as nice as Alona, but without the crowds. If you need, you can stay at Richem Pension Hauz (in Valencia) on the way. They offer quality fan and aircon rooms at very affordable prices. +63 926 864 4008 . Once at Anda Beach, check out Anda Lodge for similar pricing…it’s across from the public market.

Tip 1: The cheap carinderia (eatery) next to the market is among the very best I experienced anywhere in the country!

Tip 2: For a unique dining experience, check out Coco Loco restaurant nearby…you can try a veggie hamburger with a patty made from coconut! It’s pretty good, too. Wash it down with a Filipino craft beer…it’s amazing that you can find a place like this all the way out here!

Tip 3: Stop at Blue Star Dive Resort on the way to Anda Beach (it’s about 5kms away), and consider diving or snorkeling there. “Paradise Gardens” is considered one of the best snorkeling sites in Bohol, and you can swim out to it directly from the resort beach!

Budget Restaurant & Lodging Tips

There is a new native-style place called Alona Hammocks where backpackers can sleep in a provided hammock…it even includes a simple breakfast, and all for 200 pesos ($5USD). Near Amorita Resort Entrance.

Isis Bungalows and Thai Restaurant – At the other end of Alona Beach, they have a very friendly staff, affordable and delicious Thai food + BBQ, inexpensive mid-range lodging, and a rather unfortunate name. They’re not super budget rooms, but still a great value.

Other Alona restaurants to try: Sunset Grill – Mexican Food, owned by a Mexican-American (it’s legit), Giuseppe Pizzeria (pizza is also legit), and Lola Spanish Restaurant (!!). Chefs come from all over the world and get stuck on Panglao Island…lucky us:)

I looked up photos of the Philippines on the Internet many months before I ever came.  I came across a travel blog that featured Camiguin island, and I knew I had to see it for myself!  I lived in Cebu City at the time I took my trip to Camiguin.  I was lucky enough to score a 500 peso ($13 USD) promo ticket each way through Cebu Pacific airlines. 

I woke up at 4AM to catch a taxi to the airport, but in the spirit of this adventure I decided to take a motorcycle taxi (habal habal) instead. It was a long trip over to Mactan island as the sun came up.

I was nervous about taking this small plane, but the flight was as smooth as can be! The views of the islands from above were not too shabby, I must say.

This plane route is brand new…the island was only accessible by boat previously. I was amazed how quickly we had to drop down from the sky to make the landing, and wondered how many times these pilots have even actually done it. Only 3 planes a week, for 2 months since the route began. No problems at all!  Excellent flying, I must say.

 I wasted no time renting a motorbike for my 4 days on the island. I don’t have much of a budget for my long-term travel, so I find that renting my own motorbike instead of paying for transportation saves me a lot of money.  It also makes the whole experience much more exhilarating and adventurous for me.  It appeals to my sense of freedom – and I thrive on that!

However, if you are concerned for your safety, I definitely recommend getting a guide and/or paying for transportation.  You can feel good knowing that the money is likely going to the driver’s family, and then back into the local economy of Camiguin.

The map they gave me at the airport was a bit misleading, but eventually I did make it to beautifulKatibawasan falls.  (On the way I took a wrong turn and ended up at a beautiful resort where I stopped and cooled off by the pool.  I love “happy accidents” like that!)

I believe these falls are the most accessible, and by far the most popular in Camiguin.  Sometimes in the Philippines I can’t believe what I’m seeing is real, and as I arrived, my first glimpse on the left was one of those times!  Can you believe this place?  This is definitely the kind of scene I always dreamed about. 

It’s 250ft high, and reminded me of Yosemite falls back home in California.  On the right you can get an idea of how tall the falls actually are, even though the top is still cut off in this photo!  Swimming here on a hot day is very refreshing, and hiking around the area you can also find orchids growing.  It’s truly a sight to see. 

OLD CHURCH RUINS AND SUNKEN CEMETERY

The next day I continued touring the island on my motorbike. Here are some ruins from an old Spanish church from the 1500s. I believe it was destroyed by an eruption in the 1700s. I’m kind of a history nerd…I love the fact that here I am very likely walking in the explorer Ferdinand Magellan’s footsteps.

Nearby is the “sunken cemetery”, which I believe sank into the sea during the same eruption. Apparently snorkeling over it is a really incredible experience, and unfortunately the ONLY thing I didn’t do while here. For some reason what I chose to do instead was take a 2km hike straight up the side of the volcano during the heat of the day (and with all my gear on me). Brilliant, especially when I stubbed (or sprained?) my toe on the way back down.  Ouch. 

People go CRAZY for the NBA here in the Philippines. Sometimes out in the provinces they can’t speak any English, but that doesn’t stop them from running up to me yelling “Kobe Bryant!!”  They have makeshift basketball hoops all over the villages, and even out in the jungles.  At 6ft 2 inches, I can’t count how many times they have joked about me joining their teams.  With these old knees??

This a nice clear view of “Hibok Hibok” volcano that I found on my motorbike trip. Near Catarman.  The island has both beautiful black (volcanic) AND white sand beaches.  Just after this was when a wasp decided to sting me in the neck while going 60kmh on my motorbike.  That was a surprise! 

ARDENT HOT SPRINGS

The next day I headed to Ardent hot springs to (ironically) cool off. It’s summertime already in the PI, and VERY hot. I usually don’t enjoy manmade stuff like this too much, but I must say that I love this place!  The staff was quite friendly and I met some locals that wanted their photo taken:)

TUASAN FALLS

Katibawasan falls might be the most popular on the island, but my favorite is Tuasan falls.  After Ardent hot springs I journeyed deep into the mountains to try and find this place, which turned out to be slightly challenging. Totally worth it once I made it, though! 

When I first arrived, I had the whole place to myself.  There’s really nothing like being in such a magical place, alone with your thoughts.  I have been fortunate to experience this at 4 different stunning waterfalls in the Philippines so far. 

I guess what I loved about Tuasan falls was the isolation and natural beauty.  It’s a bit of a trek to get there, and they hadn’t yet put any shops or tourist facilities nearby.  Isn’t it stunning?

Eventually a few locals did come by for a swim, and they were really nice, of course.  That’s something I have noticed about far-flung and beautiful natural places.  If you run across people out there (and I mean anywhere in the world), they are always very nice people!  I have never proven wrong with that theory, not even once. Eventually I got tired of watching other people swim, so I decided to give it a try.  Surprise!!  It’s freezing.  Well I shouldn’t have been surprised…but maybe the hot springs right before had spoiled me.  Haha. 

It was nearing sunset, so it wasn’t very hot outside anymore.  I only lasted a few minutes in the water, but I’m glad I made myself do it!   For various reasons, I think this might be my favorite waterfall in the Philippines…but I don’t want to build it up too much for you.

SNORKELING AT THE GIANT CLAM SANCTUARY

It’s tricky to find this place on your own if you’re traveling solo. There didn’t seem to be a sign, but maybe that’s a good thing. If you have a map, just use other landmarks around there and stop and ask somebody when you feel you are close.

The road down the beach is rough, but beautiful. When I arrived, I was really struck by the place. By far the most beautiful beach/area I had been in Camiguin (White Island came later, but I still think it’s a tie).

Here is a typical “sari sari” (store) in the Philippines, at least outside of the big cities.

It’s kind of like a drive-through, but you just walk up to the window instead. I suspect it’s for economic reasons, but rural Filpinos usually buy supplies like shampoo and laundry soap in small single-use pouches that are draped over hanging wire (kind of like laundry hanging out to dry).

NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE IN THE LAND OF THE GIANT CLAMS

I paid for admission and noticed how nice and helpful the people running everything were. Later I was led out into the water by my guide. I assumed if I wasn’t able to touch the bottom, there would be a boat to hold onto and rest, or at least a flotation device to keep me from drowning. I’m quite sure my entry fee provided a flotation device, but for some reason I wasn’t given one. I swim with no problems, but I am very lean, with hardly any body fat.  That means in deep water, I sink more easily. It’s much harder for me to stay afloat than people with even a little body fat (fat floats, muscle sinks).

My guide had some small flotation device with HIM, so after flopping around for a bit and getting tired, I informed him that I needed to use it. He looked at me with a bit of shock, and told me he would “be right back”. Then he proceeded to swim off WITH the flotation device, leaving me flopping around in the water. Haha…I was in disbelief. I didn’t want to put my feet down and risk damaging any clams/corals…though I couldn’t touch the bottom even if I wanted to.

Luckily I had enough energy to find a small mound of sand which enabled me to drop my foot and get my nose and mouth out of the water so I could catch my breath.  He came back with an extra device and I then I got back to enjoying the tour.  Whew!

As for the experience itself, I absolutely loved it.  The massive clams were beautiful and fascinating, and when we ventured out into to deep water (10 meters) it was quite awe-inspiring. I’ve never been snorkeling in water that deep. It really was exhilarating, and the giant corals and various sea creatures really amazed me.   Please note that this isn’t my photo.  I didn’t have an underwater camera, so I found this picture (on the right) HERE.

My guide was very nice and informative, and I’m sure now they are much more careful about providing guests with floatation devices, regardless of how well they can swim. I suggest paying extra for flippers, because they will help you move through the water faster and stay afloat if you choose to not take a flotation device with you.  I have swam my whole life, but never was certified to dive or learn any techniques to help me float.  This is a goal of mine for my next trip:)   Highly recommended, this place was spectacular. 

WHITE ISLAND

Every day I was here it rained at least some of the time, and Hibok Hibok volcano was always obscured by clouds, making it much less photogenic. The last day ALWAYS works out perfectly for me, though. It’s like magical clockwork.  I knew I needed a clear view to photograph “White Island”, and I got it!

It’s basically a small sand bar out in the water, and it is known as the “crown jewel” of Camiguin. I was hoping to split the cost of the boat journey with other tourists, but I waited around as long as I could, and nobody came. So I got my own private boat…but told the boatman I wanted to stay on the island late to take photos. He reluctantly agreed.

What an incredible place!  I walked out to the edge of the “island” and then continued very far into the sea, because the water was only about a foot deep.  Eventually another sand bar popped back up out of the water resulting in the picture below. 

The only two fisherman parted ways as the sun dropped lower and lower. In a few hours this “island” would be swallowed by the sea…I stayed here until well after dark, it was just my boatman Gerald and I. I used the Tanduay that I brought to barter for some Bisaya language lessons…we became fast friends (as is the case with a lot of my taxi and trike drivers and I), and I hope to see him on my next trip.

As the locals say, I’m sure I will “come again to Camiguin”.  I loved the warmth of the people and sense of adventure on this island.  What a great introduction to Mindanao!  There is so much more to see.  Next time, next time. 

Sunriser Pension House

If you’re a backpacker and looking for something on a real budget, this place had the cheapest room I ever found in the Philippines.  I loved the older couple who run it, they were truly unforgettable!  I just had a simple fan room, and for 150 pesos ($3.80USD) a night, I really can’t complain!  I was impressed with the place, especially considering the price.  There isn’t too much information about it online, so I hope I’m remembering the name correctly.  Once in the main town of Mambajao, just ask the locals and they should know where it is.  It was very close to the public market. 

Action Geckos Dive & Adventure Resort

This is a nice midrange place, and it’s a bit more secluded if you’re looking for a real getaway. The food is not as cheap as some places on the island, but it is a good value, considering how nice the place is. You can organize a boat trip from here to White Island as well.

I took this photo while talking to the manager at the bar. They have different rooms and rates depending on what you’re looking for. The manager talked to me about another hotel his family owns in Sipalay I believe…ask him about it, I’m pretty sure each room has it’s own music them (jazz, metal, rock n’ roll…etc)

Filipinos: Think, Think, THINK!!

When I was in the Philippines, a friend of mine said “Nathan, you think too much”.  Actually, I heard this from a few Filipinos.  Really?  I mean, I know I tend to analyze things, but “thinking too much” is precisely I how I dreamed up a way to (modestly) travel the country for a year – then write an in-depth article on Filipino culture (an article that Filipinos seem to really appreciate). 

Filipinos:  I am asking you to think MORE. 

Eleanor Roosevelt said “Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people.”  Sadly, perhaps due to colonization and other factors (I’ll get to these later), the Philippines may have established itself as a country full of “small minds” – and by that I mean people that were intentionally discouraged from being ambitious, and kept from their potential.  Those in power wanted to keep it that way, and to some extent I believe it’s still the same today.  The masses (who I’m addressing in this letter) are encouraged to keep consuming products and stay focused on (and distracted by) trashy, mindless TV and gossip.  I’ve seen it happen in the US.  It’s good for the economy, but bad for the culture (it makes things easier for a government to manipulate its people and keep them powerless).

CONSUMERS AND COPYCATS

The Philippines seems to be a country full of consumers and copycats.  What do I mean by that?  Media consumption – TV, radio, and Internet…and it’s all designed to manipulate you one way or the other.  Encouraged through the media is shopping – you’ve got to have the latest shoes, bags, and phones.  Otherwise, your value in society isn’t very high. 

Just like in the US, it’s a very shallow, endless cycle of consumption, but Philippines, what are you producing?  What are you contributing to the world in terms of original literature, art, and music?   From what I’ve seen, I think you have a LOT to offer…

You are widely known to be some of the best cover-artists in the world.  You can recreate almost any song – sometimes even better than the original!  Pinoy vocalist Arnel Pineda becoming the lead singer of the iconic American band “Journey” is a good example of this.  You’re such gifted musicians and vocalists, and your grasp of the English language is impressive – so where are your own musical contributions?  I know you have some classic Filipino songs, but I’m talking about international hits (and Fil-Am artists don’t count). 

Filipinos, perhaps hundreds of years of colonization have left you holding back your talent…and feeling like you don’t have a “voice” to speak up with – that your opinions don’t matter, and have no value.  That is understandable (given your country’s repressive history), but we live in a different world now, and I hope you can begin to take the first few steps away from that oppressive colonial past.  The way I see it, for you, the sky is the limit.

LIFT YOURSELVES UP, BUT DON’T FORGET WHO YOU ARE

Now, with your growing economy, you are heading in the same direction as many wealthy western countries.  You are “modernizing”, and that appears to be a good thing.  Do you know what the irony is, though?  In our countries, the “higher standard of living” is not what you might think.  Most of you have plenty of quality “social time”.  The amount of time we have to reflect and enjoy life with friends and family is shockingly little.  Unlike most of yours, our families are broken and very disconnected.  In the “developed” world, we seem to be losing our humanity – we barely make eye contact when we’re out in public!  Your family-oriented culture and sense of connectedness is something that you REALLY have going for you in the Philippines. 

In our countries we work too much, are completely stressed out, and have countless new diseases and psychological disorders that I believe are popping up because of life in our hectic modern world.  A therapist is practically a requirement for life in any large American city.  Filipinos, do you even know what a therapist is?  No?  Good!    The point is, these disorders (just like therapists) are rare in the Philippines.  This seems to be the price we pay for being “advanced and developed” nations.  The point is, I do hope you can break free from this “colonial” mentality, but aside from that…

Filipinos: Don’t try to be more like us, try to be more like YOU.  I believe what the the world needs now is more you, not more us.

In my last article about Filipino culture, I mentioned how a few people in Manila seemed to be ashamed to speak Filipino with me.  I was saddened by that; I hoped they would be proud of their culture.  I got the impression that they admired me so much – just for being white!  When I would go through security anywhere in Manila, I was the only one who wouldn’t be searched.  I seemed to get a free pass, again, because I was white.  That was something I loved about Cebu and the Visayas…there, the security searched me just like everybody else.  It was fair.  In general, people down there weren’t impressed with my white skin.  If I was going to impress them, I would have to earn it.  They were proud, and I loved that.  I don’t mean to promote regionalism here; I just would love to see all Filipinos develop that sense of cultural pride. 

Truly the “Pearl Of The Orient Seas”

Filipinos (from north to south), please know that your culture and who you are is something unique and special in the world – something precious that’s rapidly disappearing, in fact.  Please don’t be afraid to be proud – I know you prefer to be modest, but I don’t believe pride and modesty have to be enemies.  I believe you can be proud without thinking or acting like you are better than others.  Be proud of your culture; your heritage.

Philippines, I hope soon you will become known for being more than just a friendly country with affordable opportunities for foreign-owned businesses.  My hope is that you will gain a reputation as a nation of innovators and entrepreneurs…as creators.  I have never seen so much talent be so under-utlilized.  With your stunning beaches and lush mountain provinces, you are also poised and ready to take the world’s tourism industry by storm.   However, your ecosystem is delicate, and it needs to be protected and preserved.  I’d love to see your country pave the way for environmentally-friendly tourism. That would be an innovative and much needed contribution to the world!

At the very least, I hope you can share the Filipino way of life with the rest of the world, because we could certainly learn a lot from it.

The “Crab Mentality” – Is It Helpful?

Please put an end to the “crab mentality” – lift each other up, don’t pull each other down.  If your country is ever going to rise up and share its treasures with the world, you will have to foster an environment of praise and support for your countrymen. 

Filipinos:  You are some of the most talented, soulful, and generous people I have ever encountered. Please know that you DO have a voice, that your ideas DO matter, and that your contributions (whether they be musical, artistic, or intellectual) WILL be felt. 

Believe it, and the rest of the world will, too. 

Oh!  One more thing.  If you work in government, do not EVER forget your responsibility to represent the PEOPLE – a people and a culture with a lot to offer the world.  YOU represent them on the world’s stage. Do NOT let them down.

Here we go again!  Another anti-Filipino blog.  I hope my Filipino friends won’t take this miserable Singapore hate-blog too personally. To understand what is going on in Singapore, perhaps we need some perspective.  Did you know that workers in Singapore are ranked as the most unhappy in the world?  Yes, many people are very unhappy there.  Do you know what bothers unhappy people more than anything?  Happy people. 

Do you know who the happiest people in the world are? 

You Filipinos.

Sure, that’s just my opinion…but it also happens to be the opinion of many, many other foreigners as well.  It’s no wonder that the unhappy people of Singapore are frustrated with all the smiley Filipinos roaming their city! 

It kills me that Filipino workers are being treated with so much disrespect – even though for decades they have helped Singapore become the economic powerhouse that it is today.  Reportedly, even the nationalists who fought for independence and helped build the Singapore we know today were influenced by the national hero of the Philippines – Dr. Jose Rizal. 

Many Filipinos in Singapore make very little money (much of which is dutifully sent home to the Philippines), and they work 6 days and 70 hours a week.  Am I correct that all this anamosity toward them is because they want to take their ONE day off and celebrate their country’s Independence in a public space?  Am I missing something here?  Please…enlighten me, because from my current perspective, this situation just makes Singapore look really bad. 

On the other hand, now that Singapore is officially the most expensive city in the world, people there are probably working themselves to the bone just to be able to afford the high cost of living!  There may not be much of a work/life balance for them, and this blogger might not be the only one who’s miserable.  People in the Philippines may not have a lot of monetary wealth, but in these ways the quality of life in the Philippines is far better than that of Singapore.  I hope we can try to have at least a little compassion for these overworked and unhappy people in Singapore. 

If I was living in that environment and struggling with the high cost of living, I might be unhappy, too!  I mean, I probably wouldn’t write a horribly racist blog to let out my frustrations, but that’s just me. 

The Social Media Power of the Philippines – Are Bloggers Taking Advantage of it?

Whether it’s about Filipino food or just bashing Filipinos in general, one thing is clear:

Filipinos are sensitive, and bloggers know it. 

Of course it’s understandable to be angry when people are ignorant or downright racist.  The problem is that when we get worked up into a frenzy online (and certainly when the media gets involved), we end up “promoting our enemies with our anger“.

That’s right, the old expression “any publicity is good publicity” is really quite true.  For example, every single time we write about a Polish food blogger and post a link to her article, even though the attention she is getting is all negative, we are indeed HELPING her.  Google counts all those links, and her online reputation is actually boosted because of them.  To use another expression, then she is the one “laughing all the way to the bank.”  (PS…it’s not too late to take those links down.)

We Are Sending a Message

When we react in this manner, we send a message to bloggers like this one in Singapore.  The message is: “we can be manipulated“.  Of course, being the foreigner who wrote a response back to the Polish blogger, I am guilty of this also.  However, I was careful not to include a link to her page, because that is what is really helping her.  Trust me, I know how you feel.  I thought what she did was likely intentional, and therefore unethical.  The same can be said for this poor excuse for a blogger in Singapore.  I generally try to stay positive, but honestly, they have both angered me immensely. 

The world of blogging is quickly catching on to the social media power of the Philippines.  I don’t want to see them take advantage of Filipino pride.  If you look at this Singapore blogger’s posts, the only one that anybody is really paying attention to is the one about Filipinos. 

So yes, this Singapore blogger has really stepped things up.  When other bloggers like him see how a “Filipino-basher” has benefited from the traffic in the past, he is tempted to write his own anti-Filipino blog and get a “slice of the pie”.  Yes, it’s disgusting and unethical, but we can choose the best way to respond to it. 

Here’s What You Can Do To Fight Back

In cases like this, if you’re really upset and don’t want to promote him, please do NOT share and post links to the original article.  As difficult as it might be, the best thing to do is pay it no attention.  After all, attention is what the writer wants. 

One thing you CAN do is REPORT a post if it contains “hate speech, violent or crude content“.  His post might then be REMOVED due to violation of the “terms of use.”

REPORT THE SINGAPORE BLOGGER

So basically, when writing, it’s always good to cite your source with a link, but if you feel the source is unethical or hateful, it’s best to AVOID posting any link.  That way they are not being rewarded for their bad behavior!

Personally, it’s not easy, but I will try to find compassion for these unhappy Singaporeans.  I do not envy the life they live. 

In closing, I will just say this:  It really is a shame that Filipinos abroad are not always treated with the same respect and hospitality that they extend to foreigners in the Philippines.

Enough is Enough – Please Stop Fueling Mrs. Sanchez’s Fire

My father always told me that unfortunately, even negative publicity is good publicity. 

No one seems to understand this better than Korina Sanchez, and it looks like she might be using us as pawns in her strategic game of chess.

I thought it was bad enough that her latest stunt was national news here in the Philippines, but now it’s actually trending worldwide, and I can’t keep my mouth shut about it any more.

Why is she trending, you ask?  For making horrible comments about the typhoon skipping The Philippines and instead heading to Japan, a country which, just last year, devoted 52 million dollars worth of aid to typhoon Yolanda relief efforts in the Philippines. 

As a foreigner visiting the Philippines, I had just told my friends and family back home not to worry about me as typhoon Hagupit passes by us.

Not to downplay the destruction that has occurred, but in general, I feel that the media is blowing things out of proportion, and I informed my friends and family that watching the news back home will probably cause them more stress and worry than I’m even experiencing here IN the Philippines!

Then I started thinking to myself: 

“I long for the day the Philippines will make world headlines – but for something other than sensationalism and tragedy.” 

Then, along comes Mrs. Sanchez, who seems like she might be using another potential tragedy to get herself back in the spotlight.  “Philippine News Anchor Wishes Typhoon On Japan.”  Sure, the headline may be extreme, but how does this make the Philippines look to the world? 

Filipinos deserve better.

It breaks my heart, because I feel she might be playing us all.  You see, sadly, it is possible for people to make a name for themselves in this world by being strategically horrible, and we all can fall for it by focusing on all the nasty things they do and say.  Is it that easy to manipulate all of us?  Korina Sanchez might think so, and if so, she is pulling it off time and time again (yes, if this were her first “mishap”, I would have just let it go). 

Has she thrown herself back into the world’s spotlight, like a kid acting out in school to get attention?

I beg you, netizens.  If so, let us not fall for it.   It is a media circus, and she could be fast becoming the ring leader. 

Rappler politely mentioned that Korina “once again found herself in the spotlight”.  I’m sorry, but I’m not sure she “found” herself in the spotlight.  I think that once again, she may have strategically and deliberately put herself there. 

Just like I mentioned in a previous article, if you don’t like Korina Sanchez (and those like her), just know that you are promoting her each time you give her your attention.  Also, even though people don’t like her, she can still continue to grow and become powerful.  I learned this firsthand…

My Experience on “Rated K”

To be honest, I didn’t even know who Korina Sanchez was when I was told “Rated K” would film me for a travel segment.  Well, there was some drama (more of a disappointment, really), but when I posted about the experience, I learned who Korina was, and just how my readers feel about her.  I was shocked, and had no idea!  The ABS-CBN film crew were very nice, don’t get me wrong.  However, she wasn’t with them. 

What concerns me is that somebody so clearly disliked can continue to host a prime time show on national television, and also keep moving up through the ranks of the Filipino “elite”.  Does this concern you?

it doesn’t seem to matter that so many people dislike her, because she keeps pulling stunts like this – and gaining more and more notoriety.

Sure, here I am talking about Korina Sanchez in this very article, but I do it because at the very least, I’m tired of watching people possibly manipulate Filipinos (and the rest of the world) in order to get ahead in life. 

If there is one message I would like to spread, it’s this:

Stop fueling the fire of people like Korina Sanchez.  Please recognize her behavior for what it quite possibly is: A desperate cry for attention. 

She could have been decent and simply said:  “Let’s hope the typhoon dies down before it claims any human lives.”

But…will that make headlines?

If she really is doing this intentionally, she’s making a mockery of the Philippines.

Just ignore her.

This country deserves better.
