Tour Departs By Boat From Palompon Town

Due to the nature of my trip (weather…possible motorbike breakdowns…etc), unfortunately I couldn’t inform the tour company exactly when I would be there. I was impressed, because even at the last minute, they were able to throw an overnight camping trip together for me. What a dream come true!

I met my guide, Mrs. Warblitz at the Palompon port early the next morning. It was a bit cloudy, so I hoped the weather would clear for nice pictures.

It was only about a 45 minute boat trip, and before I knew it, I was already exploring the tiny island! I came across the rocky beach pictured above, and also a small island chapel...as well as a tree house on the far end. I heard that it’s private property, unfortunately.

I took a few photos and made some new friends…there were some tourist groups from the Philippines, and quite a large one from China. Soon, the clouds began to part, and I was thrilled to see the sun shine down on our little island paradise…

A Picture-Perfect White Sandbar

The tide was starting to come in by the time the sun came out…so the sandbar was slowly submerged by the sea. As you can see here, there is a native-style lifeguard tower, and the lifeguard is constantly kept busy chasing after tourists who try to cross the sandbar at high tide (you’re only allowed to cross when the sandbar is exposed).

There is a small mound of sand at the end of the sandbar…it becomes its own little island at high tide, too. It’s incredibly beautiful.

Blessed by powdery white sand and the shade of plenty of coconut trees, Kalanggaman island truly is a gem in the pacific. “Langgam” means “bird” in the local dialect, and the island gets that name from its shape, when viewed from above.

I climbed up in the nipa hut lifeguard tower for a better view of the sandbar.

The lifeguards were friendly, and I interviewed them a bit as they kept watch on the beach. Below is Nick, who came to Palompon because he has family here. With all the discipline of a military man, I had no doubt that Nick and the guys would keep the island safe throughout the night.

Overnight Camping on the Island

Here I am in my own little “bahay kubo”, or native hut. Made from bamboo and nipa, these are iconic in the Philippines. I just relaxed and got some reading done in my hammock. Not a bad life!

As you can see below, the tour company took good care of me. My trip was so last minute that they were not able to include an overnight tour guide. For me this was actually ideal…I love being on my own to take photos and explore. They introduced me to the island guards and the caretaker, and left me with all the supplies I could ever need…

I had a tent, a hammock, rain gear, coffee, tea, fresh vegetables, and an assortment of Filipino foods to last many meals. I even had nachos and beer…and there was enough food to share with new friends, which is the Filipino way. The team set up a beautiful campsite before departing the island. The boat would return to pick me up in the morning.

Being left on my own beautiful tropical island…this really is the kind of adventure I’ve always dreamed of. Guess what?  It gets better…

Snorkeling Off The Beach

A local told me where I might find some corals near the beach. You’ll have to ask for specifics once you’re there. In the fading afternoon light, I managed to get some underwater photography done. Here is a small school of colorful fish above the corals.

There were some beautiful flower-type coral gardens, with both hard and soft corals.

I also spotted a puffer fish, a large lionfish, and a beautiful giant clam. Not bad for an island which isn’t even known for its snorkeling! Something I’ll never forget is one of the young guards who wanted to go snorkeling with me, to make sure I was safe out there.

It was actually his first time using a snorkel & mask to see underwater! He was totally blown away, and I loved watching him experience it for the first time.

TIPS: Always wear a life vest, and do not swim or snorkel near the actual sandbar. The lifeguards told me the current is incredibly strong there. Also, please apply “reef safe” sunblock if you use it, as the chemical “oxybenzone” can kill or damage the coral reefs. I think Banana Boat for kids may be OK.

Sunset on the Sandbar

By sunset, the tide had gone back down, and it was safe for us to walk along the sandbar and take photos. I can imagine the sunsets get even better than this on less cloudy days, too. Just magical.

The local guys and I listened to reggae music (I brought a tiny speaker) as we enjoyed the prepared food. Around 9pm they retired to the other end of the island, and I had the whole sandbar and coconut grove to myself. Perfect weather to sleep outside…so peaceful. I’ll never forget it.

How To Get To Kalanggaman

The most convenient way might be to take a cheap promo flight to Tacloban from Manila or Cebu, then join Leyte Gulf Travel and Tours. They provide vans for the 2-3 hour trip, and of course the boat and all your supplies.

Where to Stay

Overnight camping was pretty epic, but you can also stay in Palompon Town. I stayed at Asayas Pension Plaza…it was OK, but they don’t have online reservations.  Mrs. Warblitz or Mrs Ludette @ Leyte Gulf can make some good hotel recommendations for you if you need.

Again, many thanks to the team for providing this incredible experience! I’m not usually a “tours” kind of guy, but after experiencing everything they have to offer, I can see why it’s worth the extra money.  You can just enjoy your vacation…without the stress of planning so many things. They were super nice, and most importantly – professional.

For me, Kalanggaman Island is just incredible – not too developed or crowded…with a nice white-sand beach and plenty of shady coconut trees. Add to that friendly locals, and you’ve got a perfect recipe for paradise.

Really, this island is pure eye candy.

Arranging a tour is easy, because you will receive many offers as you walk around the main town of General Luna.

If you do surf, don’t forget you can bring your board and enjoy some reef breaks during your trip! Just let your tour guide know that you would like to surf beforehand. This tour is great for taking photos…though it’s probably better if you bring an underwater camera. As a photographer, I prefer the Olympus TG4 over the Go Pro. I used it to take most of these island photos.

Naked Island – First Stop on the Tour

As you can see, there isn’t much to “Naked” Island. It’s still beautiful, though. You probably won’t spend too much time here, but It is a nice spot to swim. If you want to snorkel, there are some decent corals the tour guide can bring you to nearby.

Daku Island (My Favorite)

There are many reasons that Daku Island was the highlight of my tour…mainly, it’s because of the quality of the beach. Covered in powdery white sand, this is definitely the best place to relax on the beach or swim. If you bring fresh fish from the market, you can have it cooked for a fee here. Don’t forget to order a fresh coconut, too!

“Daku” means large in the local language, and it is by far the largest of the islands on the tour. There are some nipa huts available to rent overnight, so if you’re adventurous, you can arrange to be picked up in the morning. The huts are about $7.50USD from what I remember, and face the beach and sunset. Next time!

Guyam Island

This was the final stop on my tour. I love how this tiny island looks as you approach it by boat – the quintessential “island in the sun”. However, I did not enjoy actually being on the island as much as I did Daku. The sand is more course, and the beach is not quite as nice. If possible, I might ask if your tour guide is willing to go to Guyam island first, then Naked, then finish up at Daku for sunset.

I did enjoy putting my hammock up on Daku island – there are plenty of coconut trees if you want to bring yours. Half the island is a beach, and the other half is covered in rock, as you can see below. There are no facilities or residences on this island, but I think there might be a caretaker.

More Siargao Island-Hopping Tips

Your hotel probably offers tours, but the best place to arrange a cheap tour is in General Luna. There will be many touts offering as you walk around. I think it should cost about 1,500 pesos ($35USD) for 2-8 people. Your tour will depart from General Luna early in the morning, and that is also the best place to buy supplies for lunch at the market. Your guide can help with that.

If you want to snorkel, make sure you arrange the rental with the guide before you leave. Don’t forget plenty of water, and reef-safe sunblock!

It’s quite surprising that I haven’t been to Bali yet, considering all the places I have been, and how much I have always wanted to explore the fascinating sights, sounds and tastes of Indonesia.

When I ask hardcore travelers where they encountered the most warm and friendly people in the world, Indonesia is always up there near the top (right alongside the Philippines, which I have been fortunate to explore quite a bit).

Yes, the hospitality of the locals is legendary, but what else about Bali makes me want to pack my bags and go?

Traditional Balinese Culture

This is the stuff adventurer dreams are made of–I imagine myself trekking through dense, steamy  jungles…with curious parrots and monkeys keeping a watchful eye on me from above.

Suddenly I reach a clearing, and am stunned to unearth some ancient carvings and ruins…

Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I see some shadowy figures slip through the trees. Before I know it, they emerge from the thick vines. I am surrounded. With my hands up, I try to communicate that I come in peace…progress is slow going, but eventually they realize I pose no threat. They warm up to me.

Before I know it, we are back in their village, where we begin the process of bridging two very contrasting cultures…OK, OK…so I let my imagination run wild a bit. Travelers are quite unlikely to have an experience like this in this day and age, but a boy can dream, can’t he?  Haha.

Even though the island is quite developed and touristy, from what I’ve read, there is still plenty of rich culture and heritage to explore in Bali.

The Temples

I can’t wait to photograph and explore all the temples! Some that come highly recommended: Tanah Lot, Uluwatu Temple, Goa Gajah, and Ulun Danu Beratan Temple (Pictured here).

Do keep in mind that proper attire (sarong & sash) are usually required. These can be rented or supplied with a small donation.

Balinese Food & Drink

Like many people,  my desire for a trip to Bali was re-stoked by watching TV host and chef Anthony Bourdain fall in love with the island. I already know I love Indonesian food, with staples such as nasi goreng (stir fried rice with eggs, prawns, chilis, and vegetables) and mee goreng (the same, but with spicy noodles instead of rice).

However, I’m excited to try some Balinese specialties, such as nasi campur Bali (mixed rice) and betutu, which is a roasted poultry dish with spices.

Also on my menu is kopi Bali (local coffee), and brem, which is a Balinese version of the rice wine that is characteristic of much of Asia. I imagine these two are similar to “Barako” Coffee and “Tapuy” wine, which are their Philippine counterparts, respectively. 

The Beaches…and the Surfing

Word has gotten out about Bali’s surfing…apparently today’s spots are a bit different than the relatively unknown breaks of 20+ years ago. It’s really blown up, but I guess you can still find some glassy calm just as the early morning sun rises.

I just learned to surf in the Philippines, so I’m excited to try my luck in Bali.

From what I’ve gathered, some beaches are more crowded than others. Kuta Beach is where the party’s at, but I’m also excited to explore some lesser known beaches like Pasir Putih and Balangan. There really is so much coastline to explore, I’m excited to rent a motorbike and see as much as I can!

Yes, My Bali Adventure is Calling

Like many “digital nomads”, being based in Thailand gives me easy access to awesome destinations like Bali. The island is so centrally located–I can hop on a budget flight for $50 or less and be there within an hour or two. Not bad! I look forward to covering Bali in much more detail in the future. Stay tuned!

Masbate is the kind of place you discover and just want to keep to yourself…but then you realize how much tourism would help the province, so you write a blog about it…

So why are there so few tourists? In the past, Masbate had two things working against it: It was relatively inaccessible, and it had a reputation for being dangerous. *Update* – I’m happy to update that Cebu Pacific is now offering plenty of budget flights!

Those who make the effort to come here now (by flight or cheaper Roro bus) will be handsomely rewarded; for this is the time to experience pristine Masbate Beaches that tourism may change forever.

Is Masbate Dangerous? What About My Safety?

As for safety, Masbate was known for political violence in the past (this generally doesn’t affect tourists). Honestly, I felt just as safe there as anywhere else in the Philippines…perhaps even more so. I think these days it’s quite safe…just be street smart, as you should anywhere you travel. You can research and avoid election season if it makes you feel better.

The people I encountered in Masbate were some of the most humble and friendly in all of the Philippines – and their province is absolutely stunning.

Island Hopping – Porta Vega Beach

From Patio Milagros in Dimasalang (one hour bus or jeepney from Masbate City), we hired a boat to take us to Porta Vega Beach Resort. The “resort” is actually just some nipa huts on a stunning beach. This would be a great place to bring some food and have a picnic. There are no facilities, but there is a photogenic chapel tucked away behind the coconut trees.

Your Daily Dose of “Vitamin Sea”

I had seen some photos of Masbate beaches previously, but I had no idea they would be this incredible. My friend Edward told me that, after a friend visited Port Vega (above), she told him it was just as nice as Sugar Beach in Bantayan Island, Cebu. I laughed, thinking how impossible that is, but then our boat pulled up to the scene below. It really is true!

Deagan Island – Marcos Mansion?

Afterward, we stopped by Deagan Island, which reportedly was owned by Ferdinand Marcos at one time. After he was ousted, the locals took his mansion back…piece by piece. Now there are just a few scattered remnants near the fishing village. History buffs might want to come here, but from what I can tell, Porta Vega Beach is even nicer.

Catandayagan Falls & Halea Nature Park, Monreal

Day 2 of our island hopping adventure was just as rewarding! Catandayagan Falls plummets directly into the sea – one of very few waterfalls like it in the world! Summer (March – May) might be too dry to see a lot of water cascading down, and I also recommend going in the afternoon if possible. That way the sun will be behind you and not wash out your photos.

Halea Nature Park

You’ll be in awe from the minute your boat starts to pull into the cove!  There are also great places to picnic, though travelers can also spend the night in the resort or camp on the beach. You’ll see some dead coral here if you snorkel, but I believe it is growing back now. Don’t worry, because there are still a surprising number of colorful fish!

Here I met some local children cooling off…I would have given anything to have a playground like this when I was growing up! Below is “Ferdz” Bravo and family, who was kind to invite me along to both island hopping tours.

Burubancaso Rock Formation

Burubancaso (also spelled Borobancaso) was another unique stop on our trip. A great place to swim, climb, and take photos! If you were wondering, the main photo at the top of this page was also taken there.

Buntod Reef Sandbar

The sandbar at Buntod Reef was another nice surprise. It can be reached directly from Masbate City! Just tell the trike driver to bring you to the pier at Rendevouz Hotel.

Here you can rent kayaks and inner tubes, but also snorkeling gear…because the snorkeling is pretty good! As you can see in the photo below, I found Nemo (clownfish), but I also saw quite a few other sea creatures down there.

No More Dynamite Fishing

I became friends with the fishermen who manage the reef, and I listened to their fascinating stories. It turns out that they used to be dynamite fishermen (you can see some remnants of dead coral as you snorkel).

Instead of continuing down that path until there was nothing left, the province decided to start paying them to protect the reef. A few years later, local tourism is really starting to pick up…what a success story! You can book all your island hopping adventures through them.

Palani – One of the Best Masbate Beaches

Back in Masbate City, Governor and Vice Governor Vince and Kaye Revil were very kind to invite me to a football event right on beautiful Palani Beach. I’ve never seen anything like it! I’m not a huge sports fan, but I might be if all games were held on beaches like this!  Haha.

Palani beach is definitely one of Masbate’s gems, and a great place to watch the sunset.

It’s located in Balud, about an hour and a half away from Masbate City by jeepney, bus, or van. A trike must be taken down the dirt road before you reach Balud proper, so make sure you tell the driver you want to go to Palani Beach. You can also see Fazenda da Esperança and Sese Brahman’s Ranch nearby while you’re at it! More on that down below…

Ticao Island Beaches & Manta Bowl Diving

Ticao Island is famous for manta ray diving (though I have yet to try). However, it’s also home to some of the finest Masbate beaches. Apart from the Ticao Island Resort where the divers stay, there is still little tourism development on the island.

They have declared an area near San Fernando a marine sanctuary, but I think it may take some time to regrow before snorkeling is good. Honestly, I just loved wandering around the small fishing villages and meeting the friendly locals (I was with a guide).

I explored some virgin beaches, but also the beautiful Serrano Century House (pictured below). This historic building has been kept up very well by its colorful owner. Stop by for a visit!

Minalayo (Snake Island)

I heard tales about an island full of poisonous sea snakes, but I know how people like to tell stories. I didn’t take them too seriously. Well, I found out it really is true! This tiny island has a cave FULL of “banded sea kraits”. The local name for these snakes is “walo walo”. They are very poisonous, but not aggressive at all. In fact, you’d have to be very unlucky to step on one and get bit.

Well, I only see them in the water while I’m snorkeling, and they don’t seem to care about me at all. On this tiny island, however, they are crawling all over the rocks, and you really could step on one if you are not careful.

My heart really raced as I snuck up on the rocks and then jumped into the water to snorkel through this beautiful cave. How very surreal to be swimming among these beautiful snakes, with bats flying and screeching over my head!

If you want to snorkel here, be very careful where you step. I would recommend having the boat men drop you off in deep water where you can swim into the cave, so you don’t have to climb over the rocks to jump in. Just wear a life jacket and aqua shoes and you should be fine. There are some nice schools of fish and corals along the outside of the cave.

It was nice to return to the boat and see the beautiful rainbow and sunset above during the trip back to Ticao!

Fazenda da Esperança and Sese Brahman’s Ranch

Masbate is fascinating to me, because it has so many sides to it. Not only can you find these incredible beaches, but you can also find authentic cowboy culture…ranches, cattle, rolling hills and all! I will not spend any time talking about the Masbate Rodeo, because I will devote my next blog to it entirely.

Fazenda da Espeança is actually a drug and alcohol treatment center, but it is located in such a beautiful place – tourists love to visit it!

Also worth a visit is Sese Brahman’s Ranch. This beautiful property is full of grazing horses and cattle, and a really cool tree house! Next time I visit, I hope to ride a horse…

Ticao Island Resort – This is perfect for divers who want to explore the Manta Bowl, but also good for those willing to pay for a secluded, quality vacation experience. Francjoreen Beach Resort – This option is much more affordable, but quite far from most island hopping and rodeo activities.  Explore options or book your stay HERE

How To Get To Masbate (and Around)

You can *now* take affordable flights to Masbate City from Manila, or you can take a daily Roro bus from Cubao (Manila as well). The bus will board a ferry after 10+ hours of travel, then arrive on the island of Masbate. You can book Island hopping tours at Buntod Reef in Masbate City. You can also get to Ticao island by boat from Bulan, Sorsogon.

To travel around once you arrive, head to the Masbate jeepney and bus terminal and tell them where you need to go. For short trips, the trike drivers in Masbate were some of the most honest and friendly I’ve experienced anywhere in the country…I made friends with many of them!

This is Romblon, Romblon – Don’t Get Confused

Romblon island is the middle of the three islands in Romblon province. The island to the west is Tablas, Romblon, and the one to the east is called Sibuyan, Romblon.

Getting to this island from Tablas was a bit of an adventure itself, but there is a much easier way direct from Manila (I’ll cover that later). I arrived at the port of Romblon Town in the early morning. After a nice, brief rest at my B&B, I headed to JD&G Italian Restaurant. This place was recommended to me, and not only was the food fantastic, but the owner had a motorbike I could rent!

I finished my lunch and hopped on the bike. Within minutes (literally), I was treated to this view:

Yeah, right away I could tell I was going to love this island. Hardly any tourists, with breathtaking turquoise seas and white sand beaches.

About 1km after this overlook, I located the small trail going to a place called Bonbon Beach. I had seen some amazing photos online, so I was excited to check it out.

Colorful Romblon Town

The town itself has a lot of character. Many of the buildings are splashed with vibrant, pastel colors. It gives such a bright, cheery feel. I love it.

“Good Vibes” in Romblon’s Marble?

As you can see in that last photo, marble (the mineral) is Romblon Island’s claim to fame. I noticed many marble shops in town, and quite a few marble sculptures and statues along the countryside roads.  What I also noticed is that, quite simply, Romblon is full of good vibes. Really, there is an unexplainable energy I felt here.

In fact, as I rode my motorbike through the remote parts of the island, my arm literally started to hurt from waiving back at all the smiley locals. There were SO MANY. Don’t get me wrong – the Philippines is the friendliest country I’ve ever visited, but Romblon Island seems to take that friendliness to an exponential level!

Carlos Reyes, owner of Stone Creek House in town, half jokes that maybe it’s something in all that raw marble just below Romblon’s surface. Who knows, stranger things have happened. Whatever it is, I felt it…and it was good.

Fort San Andres

A steep 10 minute climb up some stairs by the market brings you to this historic Spanish Fort. The grounds are lush and well kept, and there are beautiful views of the harbor and sea from the top. You can find some information and history about the fort as well. There will probably be a caretaker who will collect a 20 peso fee (40 cents).

Anyhow, after this I continued south on the motorbike, snapping colorful photos along the way. It was a beautiful day.

Talipasak Beach Resort (San Pedro)

As usual, I didn’t really have a plan. When I saw a road veering off the right, I just took it. I noticed what looked like a huge eagle flying overhead, then the road started leading into a canopy of shady trees. There were kingfishers and other tropical birds all around, and the landscape was quite beautiful. I passed a place called Totoys, then the road dead ended at Dumagat Freedive.

I wanted to have lunch somewhere, and the guy at Dumagat said to check Talipasak Beach Resort next door. I’m so glad I did.

Also known as San Pedro Beach Resort, the food wasn’t incredible, but it was pretty tasty…and definitely affordable! The woman there was quite nice, and I loved the feel of the place. I relaxed in the hammock and then went for a swim and some snorkeling afterward (I brought my own mask). Nothing spectacular…but it was refreshing, at least.

The resort bungalows sit in the shade up a small hill, overlooking Talipasak Beach and the sea. Rooms are clean, but basic. Fan only. Last I checked it was just 700 pesos a night to stay there.

Someday I hope to come back and stay for a few nights. Beautiful, secluded place. I noticed that local groups like to come in and pay for day use. They just bring their own food and drinks to the beach.

If you want to stay here (and you don’t have a motorbike), you need a trike (public transportation) to drop you off. That could cost about 300 or 400 pesos ($6-8). You’ll be isolated out there, but perhaps that’s just what you’re after.

Countryside Landscapes

The southern part of the island brought me through some colorful and friendly local communities. I stopped at a few tropical vistas and lagoons – really breathtaking scenery.

I heard people talk about going “up on the mountain” from time to time…so I asked how to get there. The last photo above was from a hike I took (the dirt road became too rough and dangerous, and I had to leave the motorbike).I believe the road going up is called Sawang-Cogon Shunt Rd.

As you ascend, the scenery really begins to shift to grassy, windswept hills…and the temperature cools off. Again, nothing spectacular, but it is cool and peaceful. Could be a good place to catch a sunset.

By the way, I also checked out the fascinating corals @ Agpanabat Marine Sanctuary while down south. Link is at the bottom of the page.

Beautiful, Rugged Coastline

Check out these views! These lush, grassy hillsides actually remind me home – the beautiful northern California coast.

I parked the motorbike and took these photos near Calabago lighthouse (not pictured).

Continuing up the east side of the island, I found these colorful buildings tucked away in the coconut trees along the beach.

There was also a native style “bahay kubo”, or hut. These were located very near to Lamao Beach Resort (this place seems to be popular with the locals). It’s a pretty remote area out here.

Why Do I Love Romblon So Much?

If the pictures weren’t enough for you, I’ll elaborate more: To me, Romblon Island is the perfect getaway / adventure. It has everything I love: Stunning beaches / swimming / snorkeling, access to a motorbike for rent, few crowds / little development, tropical jungles, windy coastal roads (with scenic vistas), a lot of friendly local culture, AND it’s small enough to circle on a motorbike in just a few hours.

I call Romblon Island “The Sweet Spot in the Heart Of The Philippines”.

To top it off, there is a tiny but tight-knit community of European and American expats there. They are highly entertaining to chat with, and they have even brought some flavors from home. As mentioned before, you’ll often find some at JD&G Italian Restaurant, which serves excellent pizza and calzones. Probably the best affordable Italian I had anywhere in the Philippines.

Anyhow, now to wrap up my story…on the way back to town, I stopped once more at Bonbon Beach. I caught a magical sunset, and captured these two fishermen bringing their boat in from the sea.

What a great way to say goodbye to my new favorite paradise.

How To Get There

You might be able to find a cheap Cebu Pacific flight to the neighboring island of Tablas, but then you need transportation to the San Agustin ferry port an hour away. The ferry only runs early in the morning and at 1pm each day. I think the best bet is to take the 2GO “party boat”, as I like to call it…

It’s an overnight sleeper ferry that goes from Batangas (south of Manila) directly to Romblon Town. It has a bar with live entertainment playing late into the night. Haha. Awesome.

Where To Stay

If you are looking to get away from it all in rustic fashion (warning: you WILL be isolated out there) check out Talipasak Beach Resort, mentioned above.

However, the best option might be sleek Stone Creek House. It’s located right in town proper, and is beautifully designed – with all the conveniences of home. The reason this is so great is because it’s nearby to excellent food, as well as the BEST beach on the island (Bonbon). In town you can easily rent the motorbike @ JD&G and explore more of the island as well.

Anyway, once I was in town, eventually the road came to a dead end at the sea. I must have looked a bit disoriented, because a local boatman named Jensen approached me and asked if I needed directions. Great timing and I was very thankful, because I was trying to get to Summer Homes Palawan, where I could park my bike and settle in for the night. I was so tired.

Chicken Soup & Reggae Music to the Rescue

I wasn’t able to see much of the resort’s character in the night, but the staff was quite helpful showing me to my room and getting me situated. The first order of business was getting some food, and for some reason I wandered right down to the small tiki bar by the beach. I guess it was the reggae music playing that got my attention, and the music just got better and better. The girl behind the counter at the bar told me I could order my food there. Perfect! I ordered my favorite Filipino chicken soup, called tinola. It was excellent.

I stuck around after dinner to keep enjoying the music and good vibes. That’s when I started to realize just how laid back Summer Homes really is. Not many people know how important music is in my life, and as the playlist continued, I really started to wonder who created it. They seemed like my long lost twin! It was as if they put my own iPod on random at the bar. It’s rare to find a place in the Philippines where I instantly feel so at home, music-wise.

After some investigating as the night went on, I learned that the playlist was created by the British owner, who was close to my age and owns the place along with his wife, who is Filipino. Too bad they weren’t around while I was there, because I got the feeling we would have gotten along great.

The next morning I woke up to some great weather, and I realized just how colorful the place is!

Summer Homes is a good value, not really dirt-cheap like a backpacking hostel, but not wildly pricey like most seaside resorts, either.

My room was simple, and very clean + well lit.

Essentials like soap, shampoo, and toilet paper are provided, and importantly, so is a mosquito net. To be honest, I never even saw a mosquito in the 5 days I was there, but it was nice to know I had a net if I needed it.

Many of the more affordable options in the Philippines don’t provide screens on the windows, and that is the biggest problem when it comes to mosquitoes. Summer Homes had it all, and with a friendly staff and great location right on the beach.

Someday I hope to create a checklist / guide for people considering starting businesses like this. If you want to offer relatively affordable options for backpackers and long term travelers, you could use Summer Homes as a stellar example!

 
I loved seeing how diverse the guests were in terms of age and nationality. Most seemed to be European, but there were definitely Australians, North Americans and locals as well. Nice mix, and a great energy.
 

Restaurant With Fresh Ingredients

I must say, I was quite impressed by the food they serve! The restaurant is perfect for those with western tastes. You can enjoy versions of Filipino food that aren’t quite as sweet, salty, or heavy, which many westerners prefer. You can find many familiar western options as well. They even bake their own bread, and that certainly made my eggs and toast breakfast memorable! Instant coffee is provided free of charge, too.

Summer Homes also gives the option of eating dinner directly on the beach if you’d like, and even has the occasional bonfire! Here I’m enjoying a meal of chicken, rice, and fresh vegetables by candlelight.

The resort offers plenty of tour options for adventure seekers, you can inquire at the front desk. The first tour I took was island hopping, which included snorkeling with sea turtles and then lunch on beautiful “Exotic Island” afterward. Before we headed home we stopped to check out more snorkeling, and some of the most spectacular corals I have seen anywhere in the Philippines.

A Note About Snorkeling / Swimming:

Make sure you bring “reef safe” sunblock if you go in the water. I think “oxybenzone” is the ingredient you want to avoid. Many of the brands that are safe for kids are actually better for the coral reefs as well. Anyhow, afterward, we stopped by a sandbar and spotted some starfish to wrap up an absolutely perfect day.

Another tour I took was a quiet paddle boat through the mangrove forest. If you’re observant, you can find many species of colorful birds, including beautiful kingfishers. Also present are highly poisonous mangrove snakes, which pose no threat because they sleep coiled up high in the branches during the day. Your boatman will point them out to you if he sees any. This was a beautiful and fascinating tour for me.

The last one is a short trek to Pamuayan Falls, which can be arranged through the resort, or accomplished on foot 3 or 4 kms from town if you’re feeling a bit adventurous. Just make sure you get proper directions, because there are a few unmarked turns along the way. I loved seeing the “trashcans” along the trail, which were actually just burlap sacks tied to the trees. It is a very rustic and untouched place, so it’s nice that the locals are taking these steps to keep it clean. You can take a shallow swim or bring some food to have a picnic in the large hut by the falls.

As of now there is a “Full Moon Party” that takes place each month at the end of the beach. The night I went, there was a large diverse crowd with a live DJ and some fire dancers. There were even some people playing the Australian Aboriginal instrument known as a “didgeridoo”. Everybody was having a great time.

Anyhow, I highly recommend staying at Summer Homes, especially if you want a pretty affordable place without sacrificing too much quality. I honestly doubt you’ll get more value anywhere else. They even shared some of their music playlist with me before I left, and that inspired me to share some of my own with them! So when you’re there, you might even hear some songs handpicked by me:)

It’s not too well know outside the Philippines, but I hope my Caramoan Travel Guide will help convince international tourists (or locals who haven’t visited yet) to check this place out! I really did love it.

The Paradise That Just Might Have It All…

Caramoan is located in the province of Camarines Sur, in the Bicol region of the Philippines. It’s one of those places I always had a good feeling about…I just knew I was going to love it.  Well, when the team at Naga Excursions sent me an invitation to explore it, I jumped at the chance!

The Philippines is quite diverse…I love the beautiful beaches of Boracay, the rolling hillsides full of grazing cattle in Masbate, and the majestic limestone cliffs of El Nido. Somehow, Caramoan has all of that, but also the Bicolano food that I love so much! Spicy and coconut-infused…if you love the beaches and food in Thailand, you might want to check out uncrowded Caramoan instead.

Manlawi Island Sandbar – My Caramoan Travel Guide –

Manlawi Island had the most beautiful sandbar I’ve seen anywhere in the Philippines! We arrived just before noon, and within 1 hour, our boat was already on dry land! We had no choice but to wait until the tide came back up. Not a bad place to be stranded, though:) It was also fun to explore the rolling hills, Mangrove trees, and floating cottages nearby.

1st Stop on the Island Hopping Tour – Matukad Island

What a beautiful beach! Here you can snorkel, swim, or climb up a natural rock wall that leads to a hidden lagoon…legend has it that there is a lone bangus (milkfish) that guards the lagoon.

“Survivor Caramoan”

Did you know that Caramoan is where the TV show “Survivor” is filmed? Unfortunately, it makes visiting certain islands impossible much of the time. Some locals aren’t too happy about it, and I don’t blame them.

Trekking Through the Manapot River to Umang Cave

After relaxing and rock climbing on Matukad Island, our guide led us into the cool waters of the Manapot River. Our destination? Umang Cave, but we had to wade through the river to get there. You can touch the ground almost the whole way (unless you’re very short, I suppose). The cave is  pretty impressive, but just getting to it is half the fun!

The Breathtaking View and “Talking Rocks” of Pitogo Island

As the sun began it’s journey toward the sea, we stopped at fascinating Pitogo Island. Here you can hike up a grassy hill to a breathtaking 360 degree view of the islands. What’s truly fascinating about it are the “talking” rocks, though! The beach is made up of giant, smooth rocks (no sand), and as the waves crash onto the shore, it makes a loud sound unlike anything I’ve ever heard! Hopefully I’ll post a video sometime soon.

Sunset at Lahos Island

We stopped at this idyllic little island just in time for mother nature to put on a magical show for us. Yes, indeed there is something enchanting about a dramatic island-sunset in the Philippines – the perfect way to wrap up an island-hopping adventure in the sun.

Tugawe Cove Resort

What a beautiful place to unwind after island hopping! This private cove is a great place to kayak, snorkel, or swim (in the pool or the sea!). Even just getting to the resort was a blast, because we took a speedboat from the mainland. I think that was the first time I’ve ever been on one, and it’s a lot of fun!

Inspired Design

The bungalows get more and more beautiful and quaint as you continue up the hill. I’m a big fan of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture, and some of these bungalows were reminiscent of “Falling Water”.

The restaurant, game room, and pool are at the top of the hill, and as you can see, the views are spectacular! It is a fancy place, so I was actually surprised how reasonably priced the food and drinks were. Meals were quite good, and the staff was very attentive and friendly (I especially loved how they greeted us “marhay na hapon” – good afternoon in the Bicol dialect – when we arrived.

It’s billed as a 5-star resort, and while I don’t think it’s quite a 5-star resort by international standards, it is unquestionably beautiful. Guests have free use of the kayaks and snorkeling gear, and I took full advantage of that fact! Check the photos from these adventures further down below…

Incredible view from the pool, huh? If you ask the staff, they might let you see their resort mascot – a mischievous tropical bird called a hornbill. I think his name was Kevin, and I thought giving him such a human name was awesome.

Here you see what makes this resort so unique – it’s a beautiful cove that also has its own lagoon. Out in the water you can see how much coral there is to explore as you snorkel. The best views are in deeper water, so bring a life jacket and swim carefully!

Below are some photos I took while I snorkeled. As always, I used my Olympus TG-4 underwater camera. You can see quite a bit of fish if you are brave enough to venture out into deeper waters. The resort recommends that you stay within the cove, though. I agree….the waves and current quickly gets strong as you get further and further out.

I accepted a last-minute invitation to experience these remote islands in the Philippines – I’ll never forget it.  These are some of my favorite photos taken in the last year!  Make sure you scroll through and see all of them…

This is beautiful Bitaog beach on Porongpong, the largest of the Palumbanes Islands.

These 3 tiny islands are about 45 minutes off the coast of northwest Catanduanes – an island province of the Philippines.  Che of Backpacking Pilipinas told me about this place – she is the famous traveler who explored all 80 provinces of the Philippines before she turned 30.  A local of Catanduanes, she started BookSail, which has worked to provide these local children with books to read:)

Make no mistake – there is basically no tourism infrastructure on the islands.  For me, that was part of the adventure.  When our boat pulled up to the small fishermen village, the locals seemed very excited to have a visitor.  Could I be the first white traveler to experience these islands?

My host Linda (pictured above) quickly introduced me to Sir Yoy, who is the head teacher of the local school.  I mentioned that I would love to climb the hill where the lighthouse was…so I could see the sunset over the islands.  He was very kind to agree to guide me, because I realized later it’s quite a grueling trek!

As we started climbing the trail out of the village, I realized I forgot to change out of my “tsinelas” (flip flops), for the hike.  The trail was more steep and rocky than I thought it would be.  When I looked behind me, I noticed that half the kids from the village seemed to be joining us! 

This little girl was very young, and she wasn’t wearing any shoes.  I realized that I should probably stop worrying about my flip flops.

The view from the top did not disappoint.  It felt like we were on the edge of the world…and it reminded me a bit of the grassy, green hills of Calaguas Island, which I had explored a month previously.   

When we returned, I thanked my unexpected local guides and followed my host back to the family’s nipa hut, where I found our dinner being cooked by candlelight.  Out on the edge of the village there is no electricity, but again, it just added to this unique adventure. 

Our dinner consisted of rice, langka (jackfruit) + and fresh-caught fish in coconut milk. It was delicious!  I was tired after a long day, and climbed into my duyan (hammock) for the night.  Waking up overlooking a beautiful rice field the next morning was quite an experience, but so was the adventure the local kids would take me on later that afternoon!

Bitaog Beach – Part 1 of my “Lord Of The Flies” Adventure

I had heard there were some corals to see underwater at beautiful Bitaog beach.  Around noon (the hottest part of the day…and in summertime), the local kids were eager to take me up and over the hill to the beach.  Again, it is much further and more steep than you imagine it would be, being on such a tiny island.  It’s a lot of fun trekking through the underwater mangrove forest along the way, though. 

Swimming – The turquoise-blue water is quite a welcomed sight by the time you arrive at the beach (covered in sweat)!  Keep in mind that you can easily hire a local boatman to take you the beach.  It’s just 15 minutes away.  Here, we all swam and enjoyed cooling off – some of the kids climbed aboard a small banca (boat) so they could do back flips into the water. 

Fishing – The boys had brought some fishing line and homemade lures…I was amazed that they were able to catch quite a few small fish and crabs in no time at all!  I imagined them turning into experienced fishermen with families of their own someday. 

“They may not have shoes to hike around the island, but they certainly have a beautiful playground”, I thought to myself.  Their joy was infectious. 

Later, the locals had their kids take me out again for an afternoon boat tour…and these kids were young!  The boat master was 15 years old, and was by far the oldest of the group.  The youngest must have been just 6 or 7.  That is why I refer to it as the “Lord Of The Flies” adventure.  It is amazing how capable these children are.

Our first stop was the south beach of Tignob Island…I have listed it as “site #2” on the map below.  It’s nice, and if you snorkel out into 4 or 5 meters of water, you can see a few beautiful plate corals and colorful fish.  I heard that this beach is owned by the previous Governor of Catanduanes, and maybe that’s why I still noticed some fish and corals.  Unfortunately, many other locations have been destroyed and overfished already. 

However, the real treat was waiting in the water at Bitaog beach afterward…

These are some of my favorite underwater photos I have taken anywhere in the Philippines.  I didn’t expect to see such beautiful coral formations still in tact!  These were taken about 15-20 meters out in the water from Bitaog beach (check “site #1” on the map below).  If you are approaching the beach by boat, these corals are on the far left side of the beach.  By the way, this is an excellent beach for sunset!

The beautiful photo below was taken at “site #3” just off of Calabagio island, on the way back to the mainland.  I had to hunt around to find it, but it was worth it!

Where To Stay

Coco Beach Resort and Karaoke – This rustic place (if it still exists) is right across the water from Palumbanes in barangay Baybay.  It’s run by a woman named Mrs. Letty.  I really loved it there!  Simple nipa hut-style rooms are just 200-300 pesos a night.  To be honest, I loved barangay Baybay, they had really great, cheap food at the carinderias (eateries), and the locals were very friendly + spoke exceptional English (especially the children)!  Great job, teachers!

Marem Pension House – Virac  -This is a very affordable option right in downtown Virac.  It’s been around for many years, and is a very interesting and well maintained place.  Note that this is still 5 hours away from Caramoran, where you would take the boat to the islands.  Still, it’s a good option if you need to stay in Virac.

Catanduanes Midtown Inn (Virac)  -This is a bit more money, but a huge step up in quality…and a great value.  Note that this is also 5 hours away from Caramoran, where you would take the boat to the islands.

Pacific Surfer’s Paradise Beach Resort (Puraran)  – If you will be visiting the famous surf capital of Catanduanes, This was the best of the 3 options I explored there.  A great value for food/lodging, plus a friendly staff.  Note that this is VERY far from Caramoran, where you would take the boat to the islands. I just wanted to include it because many people visit Puraran when they are in Catanduanes.

Homestay

If you are looking to stay on Palumbanes longer than just one day, your only option is to speak with Sir Yoy at the elementary school when you arrive.  He might know of a homestay for you, or possibly be able to set you up with a camping spot on the beach.   Just ask the locals to point you to Sir Yoy, or the elementary school when you arrive. 

How To Get To Palumbanes Islands

(Tip: You might want to avoid the rough seas in September, October, and November)

The fastest way is to take a direct flight to Virac, Catanduanes from Manila, but it is a bit pricey.  From there, you can take a 5-hour bus up to Caramoran (notice the spelling…not “Caramoan”).  Ask the locals to point you to the port at barangay Baybay.  There you will need to find a local boatman who will agree to take you.  It should cost 300+ pesos per person each way, and you should make sure and secure a life jacket before getting on the boat. 

The cheapest way to get to Palumbanes is to take an overnight bus from Cubao, Manila to Tabaco, Albay.  Then you can take an early morning ferry to Virac or San Andres.  From there, follow the bus instructions above, or ask the local trike drivers if anybody might want to rent you a motorbike (only for the very adventurous).

Traveling Safe and Responsibly

Snorkeling: As you can see, there are some beautiful corals to explore…but they need to be protected from dangerous fishing methods, damage from boats, and yes…even damage from tourists.  Make sure your boatman doesn’t damage any corals with the bottom of the boat, and make sure you jump off the boat in deep water so you don’t step on any corals yourself. Always wear a life jacket, and make sure the boat stays near you as you snorkel if possible.

Note: Nobody on the island can provide you with a snorkel and mask, and I’m not even sure you can find them in Virac.  You must bring your own.  If you use fins, make sure you swim with your fins up as high as possible to avoid touching the corals.  You should never touch the corals with any part of your body – for the safety of both you and the coral. 

Locals: If you are lucky enough to be invited to stay in somebody’s home, please be a respectful and gracious guest.  Consider offering your hosts a bit of money when you are leaving, as the people on the island are quite poor.  You might consider bringing something for the local children when you arrive. They will probably love sweet candy, but please remember they don’t have access to dentists if they get cavities.

My Dream

My dream is for people to be inspired to visit these beautiful places, and use their tourism dollars to breathe life into the local communities.  Perhaps the villagers can start to sell locally-made pasalubong (gifts for tourists to take to their friends).  The income from tourism may give the fishermen more incentive to preserve and protect the underwater world as well, so it is a win-win situation!  

I hope local governments will take note, and work to responsibly protect and promote places like Palumbanes Islands.  Many thanks to tiya Linda and the Gurrobat family for all the hospitality, and for all the smiling faces that made my time on these islands truly unforgettable!  This was the raw, real Philippines that I had been craving!!

El Nido, Palawan. My Favorite Place in the World…

El Nido means “the nest” in Spanish, and once you set foot here you understand where the name comes from – it’s a circular cove protected by rocky cliffs.  In all, I stayed here for two months.  Spotty wifi and routine daily power outages weren’t enough to keep me from this little slice of heaven-on-earth (my place didn’t have a generator, but most places midrange and up do). 

On the island of Palawan, Bacuit Bay is accesible by a 5 hour bus from Puerto Princessa, where there are many flights coming from Manila.  I believe you can also take a more pricey charter flight directly.  Soon Puerto Princessa will have its own international airport, so when you factor in the national airport coming to El Nido as well, it becomes clear that the island of Palawan will be overrun with tourists in the next few years.  Now is the time to see this tropical hideaway! 

Palawan is a wild and scenic place – the stuff dreams are made of!  El Nido has it all – you can go kayaking, island hopping, snorkeling, camping, or you can just simply RELAX in paradise.  Short on time?  Check out “tour A” for island hopping.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate, because this tour has some beautiful scenery. If you have more time, I recommend getting away from the crowds and finding some peace and quiet of your own.  If you rent a kayak you can easily head out to your own scenic island for a day – or even an overnight trip.  Hammocks can be purchased in the town proper. 

To date, there is no international ATM (how this is possible, I have NO idea), so bring plenty of CASH.  The more expensive restaurants do take credit cards, but I believe they charge a fee.  *It IS possible to get cash from the gas station at the pier-side of El Nido town.  They will charge your credit or debit card and then give you your cash.  I believe there is a 7% fee for this, but that is a small price to pay if you ask me.  Just go early, because they can run out of cash!

My First Real Snorkeling Experience

In this poscard-perfect paradise you’ll find crystal clear water which is perfect for swimming and snorkeling.  As mentioned before, island hopping via “tour A” is your best bet on limited time, but if snorkeling is your focus, you might check out some other tours as well. Ask the guides and tour operators which one they recommend.  I had actually never tried snorkeling before, and I was quite blown away when I tried it here!  I found myself swimming next to sea turtles on a few different occasions – right in front of the place I was staying!  The photo on the bottom right was taken during a kayaking trip to “Helicopter Island”.  From El Nido beach this is quite a journey, especially on a hot day like this one.  The advantage of doing it on your own is that you can go in the late afternoon when all the island hoppers have left.  It’s cooler then of course, and you can have the beaches and snorkeling all to yourself!

Where is the Best Sunset in El Nido?

Photography enthusiasts won’t be disappointed – some of the most dazzling sunsets in the world can be found here in El Nido (though I had to be very patient while waiting for them).  Look for a slightly cloudy day, because no clouds = boring sunset photos. However, also make sure it’s not too cloudy.   Basically, good luck!!  Haha.  I found the best spots for sunset were Corong Corong beach (near Roro bus terminal) and Las Cabanas beaches, the former which is about a 1.5km walk from the city center.

Corong Corong beach is much more of a locals area, and cheaper accomodations can be found here.  Las Cabanas is further, so you can take an overpriced trike, or do what I did and rent your own motorbike for 100 pesos per hour.  I found a place on the left just on the outskirts of town when walking to Corong Corong beach.  Ask for Moses. The sunset in the main part of El Nido (“the nest”) is actually blocked by rocky cliffs, but those cliffs are beautiful in their own right, so don’t be too disappointed.  You can also walk the beach all the way down past El Nido Corner restaurant and enjoy a peaceful sunset at Caalan as well.  Great place to take photos!

Overnight Camping in Bacuit Bay

I was fortunate enough to meet some travelers in El Nido who wanted to head out to our very own island for overnight camping.  All of us pitched in to pay some local fishermen to take us out and drop us off on the beach.  Of course you will want to negotiate the price, as well as make sure they will come and get you the next day!  You may not have cell service out there, and don’t count on electricity. 

We had a great Filipino host who helped us cook fresh fish right on the beach.  We were lucky enough to have a “paddle board” with us as well.  I took the board out late that night under the full moon.  The water was so calm and clear, I could see the corals beneath me in the moonlight as I slipped silently through the water.  It was a very surreal and peaceful experience.  The board rental is a bit pricey for the budget-minded traveler, but well worth the experience if you ask me.  Just be careful when paddling over the sharp coral.  Boards can be rented from “Artcafe” in El Nido town. 

This was my “bed” for the night, and my view in the morning.  I recommend a large, quality hammcok, and a at the very least, a sheet to guard against mosquitoes!  Something light will do just fine.  

Making Friends With Jellyfish On My Solo Kayaking Trip

I also wanted to explore El Nido on my own, so I went out on a solo kayaking / snorkeling trip a few days later.  I decided to try and lay flat on my stomach on the kayak and keep my shoulders and face over the water, so that I could float effortlessly over the amazing reefs + and still have my face (and mask) in the water. I dubbed this “snorkelacking”.  It  enabled me to see more of the deep-down reefs, while having the added bonus of not drowning (win!).

It worked amazingly well until I accidentally floated into a HUGE patch of jellyfish. I panicked and tried to push myself up on the kayak, which ended up flipping me into the water (with my backpack and flip flops on). No big deal, luckily I kept everything in tight ziplocks, and somehow managed to avoid the jellyfish (this time).  Just so you know, the jellyfish are quite tiny and are hard to see.  After coming out of the water tingling the first few times, I realized that I was swimming through them.  It’s not really painful at all, but if you just look for them near the surface as you snorkle, you can avoid being stung.  

Later I came across some local squid fishermen, and proceeded to impress the living daylights out of them with exactly 2.5 words of Tagalog. Haha.  They invited me to have an early dinner with them, and after so generously repairing my flip-flop which has just broken, they cooked us fresh-caught squid and rice right there on the beach. It was the best meal I’d had in the Philippines so far.  See the photos below.

After that I did some more snorkeling and came across a massive cuttlefish, and some giant sea turtles. Finished up by paddling out to sea to relax and watch the sunset over the islands, where eventually a couple in another kayak came out and did the same.  We sat there, bobbing gently on the South China Sea…with an increasingly incredible fiery-orange and red sky before us. Soon the moonless night invited all the stars to come out and play, and with each stroke of the paddle home, a frenzy of glittering phosphorescent plankton said “hello”. I tell you, El Nido is pure magic.

El Nido Is Here To Remind You That Life Is Good. VERY Good.

Another nearby paradise is “Nat-Nat beach”, across the water from El Nido. I got my Filipino nickname here.  I am a big fan of Nat King Cole, as well as being named Nathan, of course.  My local friends took me out fishing for the day, and we stopped here to eat lunch and relax.  There were no people here but us and a local caretaker who lives nearby.  Sunset on the way home was incredible, and we (they) caught dinner, so that was nice.  Haha.  By the way, if you rent a kayak, make sure you inspect the paddle very carefully.  On my solo trip, one end of the paddle broke off in the water!

Recommendations

I found a traditional Filipino house called a “bahay kubo” right on El Nido beach.  It’s called “Jov’s Inn”, and can be found joining walls with Balikaw restaurant right on the main road at El Nido beach.  Before you read too far though, just know that this place is much more of an “authentic” traditional experience.  That means by western standards it is PRIMITIVE.  No AC, and no flush toilets.  The smaller room facing the water has an attached bathroom, but the other two rooms do not (there is a common C.R.).  If you are looking for a more traditional hotel or resort, read further down the page. 

The simplicity of Jov’s was very appealing to me for part of my stay, and the family running it were very nice and accommodating.  They will invite you to eat with them, which is customary, but if you accept and are there for many days, try and contribute and/or cook something yourself as well.  It’s a great experience.   People tend to come here and stay a LONG time, so keep checking in with them on availability. 

Peak season in El Nido should be late December – March, and prices and availability will reflect that.  Below you can see the family and some new friends as well.  As you’ll notice, the view from my balcony could not be beat.  What a place to work!  Speaking of which, I recommend using a Globe Tattoo USB if you want decent wifi here.  It gets a much better signal than any wifi I tried to use at various restaurants.  Smart Bro doesn’t work there, or at least not well.  That’s what I was told. 

“The Alternative” Inn, El Nido

What a great view of paradise! As you can see in the photos, people come the bar / restaurant and enjoy the views for hours!  The family who runs it are very nice. On recommendation, I tried both the teppanyaki chicken and the banana heart curry. Excellent!  I loved having a cold fruit shake and working there on my computer during hot days (they have wifi). Tell Boyet at the bar that Natnat says hi!!  Well, I will be back eventually anyhow.  El Nido really puts a spell on you. Did I mention they have decent priced accommodations here as well? Treetops Guesthouse

This peaceful oasis is away from El Nido, and near Corong Corong Beach.  Travelers RAVE about it.  They offer two private bungalows made of traditional materials, and at a medium price range.  Included is a small TV and private bathroom. You can dine here with a stunning ocean view.

Balay Tubay Bar & Grill

(*Update!* Sadly, I just received news that Balay Tubay is now closed.)  This is a true hidden gem in tourist-ridden El Nido. Locals love this place, and the cover bands NEVER disappoint. They highlight the true versatility of Filipino musicians, with vocalists belting out everything from Queen to ACDC (and all VERY impressively, I might add). A great place for beers with friends and locals. Note all the colorful local handicrafts adorning the walls.  Also check out Pukka Bar.  Great spot for live music also, but with a lot more tourists. 

Midtown Bakery

Mainit na PandeSol po!!  In my opinion this is the best bakery on the island of Palawan!  Go in the morning for fresh hot bread (that’e the translation).  Very cheap, and VERY delicious.  If you happen to be celbrating a birthday party you can order a decent cake here as well.  If you are a foreginer they will love it if you speak some Tagalog.  Mah EEnut nah pahn-DEE-Sall (From an American’s perspective).

Coco Bar, Las Cabanas

I love this place. It’s great to come here to escape the crowds in El Nido.  It’s nothing but a tiny shack by the water, but they serve the best (and cheapest) calamari, rice, and iced tea meal combo!  I don’t even LIKE iced tea, and it was GOOD.  Seriously, can’t be beat.  The people working there were very nice, and again, the prices are almost too good to believe.  If you think conditions are right for a great sunset, head to Las Cabanas IMMEDIATELY, as this place had the best sunset I saw during my 2 months stay (check one of the photos below). 

I sat in amazement on the beach as a very adventurous old Italian woman popped out of the water with her snorkeling mask on and sat next to me.  She told me this was by far the best sunset she’d ever seen.  The two of us just sat gazing out over the water in appreciation.  It was quite an experience.   Next time I visit I think I’ll stay here.  It’s not as cheap as Corong Corong or a lot of places in El Nido town, but it is more clean, secluded, and the extra money seems to be worth it.

Help Protect El Nido.

In closing, I do hope you enjoy this rugged paradise as much as I did!  I am concerned about the strain put on the environment by the recent influx of tourists.  Please be mindful to not step on any corals or leave any trash – do try to enjoy these islands responsibly!  The city collects an “environmental fee” from all island hopping tourists, but there is concern about where that money actually goes.  If you notice something “fishy”, please speak up and report it!  I hope the government realizes the importance of preserving El Nido’s natural treasures.  That way they will continue to draw tourists and be enjoyed for many years into the future.

Boracay.  Boom!!

Trust me – Kim Kardashian’s butt isn’t the only thing that could “break the Internet”. 

Having been told that Boracay was already too crowded and overdeveloped, I managed to avoid the island for over a year during my exploration of the Philippines.

Still, I always wondered, “what is it about Boracay that makes my Filipino friends SO proud?”

Well now that I’ve seen it with my own two eyes, it’s perfectly clear.  Boracay is definitely the “crown jewel” of the 7,107 island of the Philippines.
 
From what I’ve seen, the perfect white-sand beaches and crystal clear waters are unparalleled anywhere in the world!  No wonder Travel + Leisure awarded Boracay “Best Island In The World” in 2012!   

No, these are not just huts on a beach – this is a world-class island with world-class amenities.  No joke.

Friendly Locals

I really was surprised how genuine and friendly the locals were – considering that the island can be so touristy.  I actually came on the bus from a neighboring province.  On the way, I was befriended by a nice old couple who lives on the island.  They guided me all the way to my hotel and didn’t ask for a thing in return. 

“We love tourists, and understand how important they are“, they told me.  Only in the Philippines!

Clean Beaches

Yes, during peak season there can be huge crowds, but what amazed me was how clean the beaches are – despite the crowds!  People can take their drinks right down to the water, but somehow I didn’t see any bottles or trash left behind.  Filipinos and foreign tourists seem to be respectful of this beautiful place, and that makes me happy.  There is a “no smoking on the beach” policy that I appreciate very much as well.  Amazingly, it actually works – I hardly noticed any cigarette butts!

“Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy”

No, I didn’t get to see the untouched Boracay of the 80s and 90s, but I choose to appreciate it for what it IS, not what it used to be.  As Teddy Roosevelt said: “Comparison is the thief of joy“.  As it is now, the island has a lot to offer tourists – whether they’re on a budget or on their honeymoon.  

“Boracay is a place Filipinos can go and be proud…they can watch as the stunning beauty of their country lights up the faces of travelers from all over the world.”

 As a foreigner who is a big fan of Filipino culture, I worried that seeing all the foreign influence on the island would ruin the experience for me.

Actually, just the opposite was true!  Boracay is the least Filipino place in the Philippines, and I realized that’s exactly why my Filipino friends love it so much! 

It’s a place (in their own country) where Filipinos can interact with people and cultures from all over the world. 

For me, San Francisco in California is the same way.  It’s a very international city, and that’s exactly what I love about it. Anyhow, it was a good realization to have about Boracay.

 Yes, Boracay is a place Filipinos can go and be proud…they can watch as the stunning beauty of their country lights up the faces of travelers from all over the world.

So What’s Your Story, Boracay?

Well, the indigenous Ati people have been there for hundreds (thousands?) of years, but in terms of tourism, the story I heard was that German backpackers “discovered” the island in the 1970s.  They would camp out for weeks at a time, and make trips back to the mainland (Panay) when they needed supplies.  However, they couldn’t keep their paradise a secret for too long, and word began to spread.  Soon, Taiwanese and Korean tourists began arriving in droves.  The island has seen massive growth in the past 20 years.

The Full Range Of Experiences (Including Mermaids)

My goal was to explore every nook and cranny of the island  – and document what’s left of the local culture if at all possible.  I stayed on the island for one month (I make these sacrifices for you, I swear:), and in that time, I befriended a family of fishermen who I ate, drank, and stayed with.  I slept on top of a table on their isolated beach – just as they do, and tried to learn as much of the local language (Aklanon) as possible. 

Other than that, I attended a pubcrawl, photographed brilliant, starry skies during the “black moon”, slept in a hammock under the full moon, and woke up to a stunning sunrise (the blue photo below). I volunteered at the local elementary school, made a guest appearance as Wolverine on Halloween, and even attended an actual underwater mermaid wedding! 

I’ll never forget the time I spent on this magical island.

Boracay Hotels and Accommodations

White Beach is broken up into 3 sections, or “stations”. 

• Station 3 is the closest to the jetty port, and is where you can find the best deals on a peaceful stay.

• Station 2 is about a kilometer or 2 away, and is where you can find the parties and nightlife. 

• Station 1 is two to three kilometers away, and is also a good place for peace and quiet – though it’s generally more expensive.

• Diniwid Beach, is a kilometer past Station 1, and it also has some relaxing (but pricey) options.  Bulabog Beach is on the opposite side of the island from White Beach, and has some affordable, less crowded options as well.

Low Season is the time to find the best deals.  This is from May to October, and while the crowds and prices are low, the chance of rain can be high (this is why rainy season is the off season).  High Season is from October to May.  The weather is better, it’s more crowded, and the hotel prices are higher. Peak Season is Christmas, New Years, Chinese New Years, and Holy Week (Easter).  Prices are very high and rooms book up super quick!

Boracay 357 Resort

This is a sleek, mid-range hotel.  With a beachfront location, it’s also clean and modern – with a very attentive staff.  People say it’s family-friendly, and also a great a value for the money.

Angol Point Beach Resort – (Nice & Affordable)

If you’re looking for a more rustic island experience (without skimping on quality), check out these upscale, eco-friendly bungalows!  Also a beachfront location, Angol Point feels far-removed from the rest of the commercialized sections of the island.   Highly recommended!

Ocean Breeze Inn – (Budget option)

If you walk 5 minutes in from the beach, you can find nipa huts at Ocean Breeze Inn for even less.  It’s a bit hard to find, so ask a local and tell them it’s near Orchids Resort.  Staff is helpful and friendly, and I the aircon rooms are a great value as well!  Did I mention the free coffee in the morning?  As with everywhere on the island, make sure you bring Mosquito repellant:)

Orchids Resort – (Budget Option)

These “native-style” rooms and cottages are also a great budget option.  Also a 5 minute walk from the beach (though a very scenic and interesting one, if you ask me).  As the name hints, there is a beautiful flower garden in the middle of the property.  The warmth of the staff is akin to “staying with a nice family in the Filipino countryside”.  Breakfast is included.  It may not be a palace, but for the money, it’s an excellent value.

Station 2

The District – (High-End)

The District – I was very happy to be invited to experience this beautiful property!  To be honest, I find that paying a bit more for an experience in the Philippines is very rarely worth it.  This is certainly not the case at The District. 

The hotel itself is modern and elegant. The staff is attentive and quite helpful, and the brunch buffet was generous and delicious!  I loved relaxing in a bed on the beach  as well.

Really, all my expectations were met and even exceeded.  Anybody looking to be pampered during their vacation or honeymoon – this place is perfect!

Patrick’s Home Boracay (Budget)

If you want to be close to the action but save a lot of money, this is your place.  Close to D’Mall, and great for long stays.  Just a short walk inland from the beach.  Don’t expect luxury at these prices, but what you get is really a good value.

Station 1

Nami Resort – (High-End)

This place is famous for its stunning views of the island.  Also great for a honeymoon, or couples looking for a luxurious escape from the noise and crowds of White Beach.  No worries if you need to make a trip to D’Mall or Station 2, though – Nami provides a free shuttle.  It’s an incredible experience staying in one of these cliff-side rooms, not mention taking the bamboo elevator to get up there!  Image source

Boracay Breeze Resort – (Budget)

 Near Balabag church, this is THE budget place in Station 1,  Conveniently located only 5 minutes from Willy’s Rock on White Beach!  Free breakfast.  Also has a convenience store nearby.  Great value for the money.  (Image source)

Bulabog Beach (“Back Beach”)

This is where the locals live…you can still find fishermen at work – and children playing on the beach. 

However, Bulabog beach is also known for adventure sports.  Kitesurfers and windsurfers flock here during the windy season each year.  There are plenty of moderately priced resorts in the area as well. 

This is an excellent place to watch the sunrise.  In fact, Boracay marks the first time in my life that I was able to watch the sun rise over the water, then watch it set over the water later the same day.  Truly an island experience!

It’s great, because if you’re craving some action, White Beach is only a 15 minute walk from here. 

The Lazy Dog Bed & Breakfast 

(Affordable midrange)  I loved this place so much.  When I say it’s cool, I mean it’s literally cool.  As you take the last turn on the sun-parched road to get here, suddenly you are welcomed by a shady corridor and a nice, cool breeze from Bulabog Beach.  Lazy Dog is about a 1 minute walk from the beach.  It’s a very laid-back and hip spot.  The woman managing it is named Djila, and she has done a great job encouraging local artists to contribute to the creative vibe of the place.  With a name like “Lazy Dog”, of course the place is pet friendly.  It’s also got solid Internet and food that people rave about (more on that later)!  Did I mention it’s LGBT friendly as well?

MNL Beach Hostel – (Budget to Midrange) 

A colorful, fun place to meet travelers from all over the world!  They have everything from affordable dorms to private aircon rooms with a (limited) view.  Not only is there a free no-frills breakfast each day, but occasionally they also provide free drinks and events.  Added bonus is that both White Beach and Bulabog  beach are only a short walk from here!  The owners are very kind, and interact with the guests when time allows.  Also note that they have a Manila Location!

This is where the thrill-seekers stay.  Want to learn how to kitesurf?  Check.  Go mountain biking around the island?  Check.  Become a mermaid?  Che…wait, wha??  Yes, here you can actually sign up for mermaid lessons (for women and men).

Where To Eat in Boracay (Midrange)

• Sunny Side Cafe (Station 3, beside Boracay Sands Hotel) – Having giant pancakes here is like a religious experience!  You can also request a half order.  They recommended the chocolate espresso (I think?) option, but I still prefer the plain.
  
  Lazy Dog Bed and Breakfast (Bulabog Beach) – The crispy tinapa keeps you coming back.  Namit gid, as the locals say in Aklanon!  Also recommend the mongo, breakfast omelettes, and Vietnamese coffee.  Prices are great, and you can book a room here as well!
  
  Tibraz (Station 2) – The French crepes lured me in…they are half-off every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday!  Mine was savory – chicken pesto.  Still dreaming of that…
  
  Real Coffee (Station 2) – The famous calamansi muffins might just be the #1 pasalubong (travel gift) brought back from the island!  In the early days, many foreigners requested “real coffee” instead of 3 in1, so this place was the first to make that dream a reality!  Haha. 

Charlie’s Steakhouse and Diner

I’m hesitant when it comes to more pricey food options in the Philippines – especially when it comes to “western” food.  However, Charlie (the owner) seemed so confident that I would love his steak, I knew I had to try.  I just have to say…wow.  Worth every penny.  The breakfast platter didn’t seem like much food (considering the price), but when I took my first bite, I had the same reaction as with the steak.  Worth every penny. 

You can tell that great care goes into the ingredients and preparation here, and I’m a HUGE music fan, so I also appreciate the rockin’ theme of the place.  Located across from Balabag School on the main road, Station 2.  Look for the giant guitar out front!

Where To Eat in Boracay (On The Cheap!)

• Joan’s Canteen (Between Station 1 & 2) – I was so happy to find a local carinderia (eatery) serving good, cheap Filipino food!  They seem to have the same thing everyday, but it’s good, and I like the selection.  Lumpiang Gulay, Adobo, Dinuguan, and Menudo.  Service isn’t spectacular, but in my opinion, what you get for the price is.  Located on a shortcut path that runs along the side of Nandana Hotel (Station 1).  The resto is close to where the path meets the main road. 

• Smoke Resto (Station 2) – There are 2 locations in D’Mall.  Also has Filipino food, but a bit more expensive, and in more of a restaurant setting.  They have one of my favorites, pininyahang manok (pineapple chicken).  Less adventurous tourists might try this option for Filipino food.

• Nagisa Coffee Shop (Station 3) – An affordable Japanese place that’s right on the beach.  I had Pork Katsu, and it was good!  Very reasonably priced, as well. 

• Shantal’s Resto Bar (Station 3) – This is more of a stand, and it’s located where the path from Orchids Resort meets the beach.  They have a great happy hour, and I *hear* their burgers are pretty good as well.  Great prices on basic Filipino and western dishes, and you can sit at a table in the sand – right on the beach!  Great if you’re in Station 3 for sunset.

Traveler Tips / Things To Do In Boracay

Getting There

Boracay can be accessed by flying directly to Caticlan airport from Manila (for tips on your layover in Manila, check here).  Sometimes you can find cheaper flights to Kalibo, which is about a 45 minute bus or van ride away from the island.

Transportation vehicles on the island are called “trikes”, and will likely cost 150 pesos to get you from the jetty port to your hotel (or from your hotel to Puka beach).  If you share them with many other people, they can be as cheap as 15 pesos each. 

There are BPI ATMs in Station 2 on the main road (near Balabag Elementary School), and they let you take out 20,000 (almost $500USD) pesos at a time.  I don’t know if all ATMs do, or if it’s just for foreigners, but this was an option for me. 

Touts – You will probably be approached by people selling everything from “selfie-sticks” to sailing tours – they won’t persist if you say no, and they’re usually very friendly. 

Safety –  I don’t know of any real dangers on the island (other than partying too hard and getting sick.  Haha.)  Perhaps people can add their thoughts about this in the comments section.  There are not lifeguards on duty, so it is advisable to be safe when swimming in the sea. 

• D’Talipapa Restaurant – (Station 2) – A fresh seafood market where you can bargain for your dinner, then pay nearby eatery to cook it for you!  Be prepared to do some hard bargaining.  It is possible to get down to 50%…

• Island Hopping / Kitesurfing / Mermaid Lessons – Ask the hotels above for info on all of these activities.  You can also go snorkeling on Crocodile Island, cliff jumping at Ariel’s point, climb Mt. Luho, or relax on quiet Puka Beach.  Ilig Iligan is even more quiet.  Be prepared for a long journey!

Take The Official “I Dreamed Of This” Sunset Walking Tour

Haha.  Joke lang, as they say in the Philippines.  It’s not official (and it will be a self-guided tour), but it’s a quite an adventure if you ask me!  Here’s how to do it:

At around 4pm, start walking along White Beach from Station 1 or 2.  Make sure you bring a light with you (flashlight on a phone will work).  Take pictures as the sun begins to dip behind the sails of the paraws (sailboats).  Continue walking to iconic Willy’s Rock, and take pictures of the sun going down behind it also.  You can get beautiful silhouette shots here. 

Continue walking until you get to the “end” of the beach, where you will climb a few stairs and continue to the left – until you get to a large hole in the cliff side.  You can continue around for a nice view, or you can be adventurous and climb through this hole (it’s quite easy).  Make sure you go back to appreciate the view though, and be careful on the narrow ledge.

Continue along the water until the path opens up to secluded Diniwid Beach.  Note the restaurant called Wahine on the right, because you might want to come here on the way back.  Continue to the “end” of the beach again, and climb the stairs and make your way to the left again.  As you get to Nami Resort, look for the sign that says “Spider House“, and continue underneath it…through the cave.  Welcome to Spider House, your tree house-style sunset destination!  I recommend having only drinks for the sunset here, as the food is just OK.  Service is great, though.  Go to Wahine on Diniwid Beach for dinner:)

If you like Spider House, you’ll probably like Red Pirates, which is on the other side of the island in Station 3.  It really feels like a sandy old pirate-bar!  The “cast of characters” who call themselves regulars are quite memorable as well.  I heard that if they are in the sailing mood (or if they really like you), they offer a really unique sailing tour.  I’m pretty sure it goes to incredible Balinghai Resort, which is a very secluded cliff-side resort with a 500 peso (consumable) entry fee. 

Environmental & Community Organizations On The Island

Yes, Boracay is a very unique place, and that is why we need to make sure it is preserved and protected.  I hope you’ll join me in raising awareness about the island’s community and ecosystem.  Here are some resources for you!

The Boracay Foundation is a non-profit that is promoting preservation and sustainability on the island.  I love their motto: “Preserve What We Have, Restore What We’ve Lost“. 

Friends of the Flying Foxes – Each morning that I watched the sunrise, I noticed many large birds flying north along the island.  I was surprised to learn that these are in fact giant bats, known as golden-crowned flying foxes.  These fascinating creatures are endemic to the island, and their numbers are dwindling. Strong-Roots Ministries / Oasis Guest House Boracay

I heard stories of an independent missionary couple who were building a guest house near beautiful and secluded Ilig Iligan Beach.  My curiosity piqued, eventually I was able to locate them.  I’m so glad that I did!  They invited me to dinner and explained what their project is all about.  Their lovely little family is working hard to employ and empower local craftsmen and artisans during the construction of their guest house, which is coming along quite nicely.  They also do everything they can to provide support and treatment for less-fortunate locals in need.  Wherever possible, rather than just giving hand-outs, they firmly believe in the concept of “teaching a man to fish“, and I appreciate that.

They have both a Sunday School and feeding program at Yapak Elementary School each week, and I came along to see what it was all about.  They started the program because many kids were making the long walk home at lunch in search of food, only to often find that there was none.  Then they would just skip the rest of the school day rather than go back hungry.

Whew!  That finally does it. I hoped you enjoyed this post – it was a lot of hard work!  Due to some technical difficulties, the entire page was erased after 100 hours of work.  I started over, but the same thing happened again.  You know what they say though, the third time is a charm!
