<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-9561860269">Son of Pioneer Andrew Lee Allen</h2>

<p>Charles Hopkins Allen was the son of <strong>Clarinda Knapp</strong> and <strong>Andrew Lee Allen</strong> &#8211; and one of <em>eleven children</em>. He was born in 1830, and died in 1922 &#8211; coincidentally, in the same Arizona town I was born in. His is among the oldest photographs in my family tree. (Andrew Lee Allen may have him beat.)</p>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-9561850669">Tracing My Family History Back to the Mayflower</h2>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<p>If you&#8217;re not familiar with the story of the Mayflower pilgrims, they were the first Europeans to settle in the &#8220;new world&#8221;.&nbsp; In 1620, they crossed the Atlantic ocean in a wooden ship named &#8220;the Mayflower&#8221;. As a result of bad weather and a long journey, many of the passengers died along the way&#8230;and just over half survived the first winter at Plymouth Colony.</p>

<p>My great, great (+) grandfather Stephen Hopkins was one of them. In fact, his son was the only child <em>born during the Mayflower&#8217;s voyage</em>.</p>

<p>(By the way, if you&#8217;re interested in your own family heritage, check out these awesome new <a href="https://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ac&amp;ref=tf_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=idrofth0a-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B01LZ5K87Z&amp;asins=B01LZ5K87Z&amp;linkId=8914bee308be955423f4301eb3c8d0c4&amp;show_border=false&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=false&amp;price_color=333333&amp;title_color=0066c0&amp;bg_color=ffffff" rel="nofollow">home DNA testing kits!</a>) </p>

<p></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-9561856469">Stephen Hopkins&#8217; Story of Shipwreck &amp; Treason</h2>

<p>Stephen Hopkins was said to be quite a hothead, and was actually shipwrecked in Bermuda during a previous Atlantic crossing. Amazingly, the island had fresh water and plenty of food, and the crew was able to survive there for 9 months. Additionally, it had cedar trees which were suitable for building a new ship.</p>

<p>Stephen Hopkins (an indentured servant) got in trouble with the authorities, because he was adamant the new ship should take them back to England instead of continuing to Jamestown Colony.&nbsp; His persistence led to a charge of treason being levied against him. Sentenced to death, he somehow managed to beg and plead for his life&#8230;it worked.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-9561856569">Inspiration for Shakespeare&#8217;s &#8220;The Tempest&#8221;</h2>

<p>News of this <em>real life saga</em> spread to England. Soon after, William Shakespeare unveiled his new play, &#8220;The Tempest&#8221; &#8211; allegedly based on Stephen Hopkins&#8217; story of <em>shipwreck and mutiny.</em></p>

<p>(Continued below, but I do hope you&#8217;ll consider following along with me&#8230;I&#8217;m a travel photographer, but am now journeying back into America&#8217;s roots to uncover my own family story. I&#8217;m just getting started!)</p>

<p><strong>More Stephen Hopkins Facts:</strong></p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>He settled both the Jamestown and Plymouth Colonies (said to be the humble beginnings of modern America).&nbsp;</li></ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Samoset was the first Native American to make contact with the Plymouth Colonists, and he stayed with Stephen Hopkins in his home.</li></ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Stephen, his wife Elizabeth, and their son Giles Hopkins all attended the <strong>first Thanksgiving feast</strong> with the Native Americans. Giles Hopkins is also my great grandfather.</li></ul>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Many other books and movies feature Stephen&#8217;s character and story.</li></ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-9561860669">An Unexpected Discovery</h2>

<p>So, one of the first Allens to be photographed was the <em>last</em> to carry the historic (and possibly <em>infamous</em>) <em>Hopkins name.</em> That I know of, at least.</p>

<p class="has-text-align-center">By <a href="https://www.facebook.com/nathan.allen.14224/">Nathan Allen</a></p>

<p>It started just like any other day&#8230;here I was, a (very) white American searching my family tree online. It ended with the surprising discovery that I am the great, great* grandson of <em>Matoaka –</em> one of the most famous <em>Native Americans</em> of all time.</p>

<p>Well, you can add this little bit of <strong>ancestry</strong> to the list of <em>things I never saw coming</em>.</p>

<div style="height:15px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div id="fb-root"></div>
<script async="" defer="" crossorigin="anonymous" src="https://connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v9.0&amp;appId=315865701871027&amp;autoLogAppEvents=1" nonce="yQp3lErK"></script>

<div class="fb-like" data-href="https://idreamedofthis.com/descendant-of-pocahontas/" data-width="" data-layout="button" data-action="like" data-size="small" data-share="false"></div>

<div style="height:15px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator"/>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-9240905269">An Anomaly in My Bloodline</h2>

<p>I mean, just <em>look at me</em>. My nickname in school was <em>&#8220;Casper&#8221;</em>.&nbsp; My family tree? You can see it <em>from space</em>. It&#8217;s a veritable smorgasbord of <em>generic Anglo American names</em>. There are classics like:</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Allen (duh)</li><li>Clark</li><li>Smith</li><li>Taylor</li><li>Williams</li><li>Anderson</li><li><em>Chief Wahunsonacock Powhatan</em></li></ul>

<p>Wait. Chief? <em>Wahunsa&#8230;WHUT??</em></p>

<p>Yes, scrolling up my line of ancestors on FamilySearch.org, this name obviously caught my attention. FamilySearch is supposedly even more accurate than Ancestry.com, and it showed that my great, great (+ many more greats) grandfather was a <em>Powhatan Indian Chief.</em></p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="420" height="420" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/bronze-statue-of-pocahontas-father-powatan-chief-wahunsenacawh-pamunkey-indian-reservation-virginia.png" alt="Bronze Statue of Pocahontas' father, Powatan chief Wahunsenacawh @ Pamunkey Indian Reservation, Virginia" class="wp-image-2551" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/bronze-statue-of-pocahontas-father-powatan-chief-wahunsenacawh-pamunkey-indian-reservation-virginia.png 420w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/bronze-statue-of-pocahontas-father-powatan-chief-wahunsenacawh-pamunkey-indian-reservation-virginia-300x300.png 300w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/bronze-statue-of-pocahontas-father-powatan-chief-wahunsenacawh-pamunkey-indian-reservation-virginia-150x150.png 150w" sizes="(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px" /><figcaption>Memorial of Chief Wahunsonacock Powhatan, or &#8220;Grandpa Wahu&#8221; as I like to call him</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Not just any chief, mind you. He was the <em>paramount chief</em>, responsible for a federation of 30 tribes &#8211; consisting of up to 15,000 members. His favorite daughter was Matoaka, and you might know her as <em>Pocahontas</em>.</p>

<p>Upon further inspection, I was shocked to learn that of all his children (he had MANY), I happened to be a descendant of <em>hers</em>.&nbsp; According to FamilySearch, <strong>Pocahontas is my great, great&#8230;grandmother</strong>.</p>

<p>Wow. This isn&#8217;t just one of those stories you hear as a kid&#8230;you know, when your parents tell you you have a distant relation to <em>this or that famous person</em>.</p>

<p>(By the way, if you&#8217;re interested in your own family heritage, check out these awesome new <a href="https://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ac&amp;ref=tf_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=idrofth0a-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B01LZ5K87Z&amp;asins=B01LZ5K87Z&amp;linkId=8914bee308be955423f4301eb3c8d0c4&amp;show_border=false&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=false&amp;price_color=333333&amp;title_color=0066c0&amp;bg_color=ffffff" rel="nofollow">home DNA testing kits!</a>)</p>

<p>It&#8217;s quite different when you see it with your own eyes &#8211; <em>right there in your family tree</em>. My whole life, I believed I was 100% of north European ancestry. This was <em>huge</em>.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-9240905669">A Descendant of Pocahontas, the Disney Princess?</h2>

<p>Haha. Who would have guessed? Intrigued, I kept searching for more information. I&#8217;ve never actually seen the movie &#8220;Pocahontas&#8221;, which portrays some kind of romance between her and the English settler <em>Captain John Smith</em>.</p>

<p>It turns out that John Smith liked to embellish things quite a bit, and most historians doubt the legitimacy of his stories regarding Pocahontas. There was no romance between them, but in fact, she did end up with <em>another</em> <em>John</em>. She met and married the English colonist <strong>John Rolfe</strong>.</p>

<p>If you&#8217;re wondering, yes, I found out that John Rolfe is my great, great (+) grandfather.</p>

<p>He was the first secretary and recorder-general of Virginia, but he was also a shrewd&nbsp; businessman. He introduced foreign tobacco seeds, and was the first to cultivate and sell Virginia tobacco internationally.</p>

<p>With this new cash crop, he basically <em>built the base of the economy</em> for the struggling Jamestown colony.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="cc-m-header-9241199869">America&#8217;s 1st Intercultural Marriage &#8211; For Peace</h2>

<p>The Native American tribes and the English colonists often got along. They formed alliances and created treaties, but as you can imagine, things did not always go smoothly. These were, after all, two <em>vastly different</em> groups. </p>

<p class="has-text-align-center">More<a href="https://ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&amp;OneJS=1&amp;Operation=GetAdHtml&amp;MarketPlace=US&amp;source=ac&amp;ref=tf_til&amp;ad_type=product_link&amp;tracking_id=idrofth0a-20&amp;marketplace=amazon&amp;region=US&amp;placement=B01LZ5K87Z&amp;asins=B01LZ5K87Z&amp;linkId=8914bee308be955423f4301eb3c8d0c4&amp;show_border=false&amp;link_opens_in_new_window=false&amp;price_color=333333&amp;title_color=0066c0&amp;bg_color=ffffff" rel="nofollow"> home DNA testing kits</a>&#8230;</p>

<p>When tensions <em>did</em> boil over, the result was the <strong>Anglo-Powhatan War.</strong> It was a bloody conflict, and members on both sides were occasionally taken and held captive.</p>

<p>Pocahontas was one of them, but she was treated quite well by the English. She even began to <em>adapt to (and enjoy) the English lifestyle</em>.</p>

<p>She fell in love with my great grandfather <em>John Rolfe</em> in 1614, and their (quite consensual, by all accounts) marriage brought a time of peace between the two groups – and a much needed <em>end to the war</em>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="672" height="403" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/pocahontas-and-john-rolfe-s-wedding-ceremony-in-virginia-painting-from-wikipedia-commons-idreamedofthis.png" alt="Pocahontas and John Rolfe's wedding ceremony in Virginia, (painting) from wikipedia commons @idreamedofthis" class="wp-image-2553" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/pocahontas-and-john-rolfe-s-wedding-ceremony-in-virginia-painting-from-wikipedia-commons-idreamedofthis.png 672w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/pocahontas-and-john-rolfe-s-wedding-ceremony-in-virginia-painting-from-wikipedia-commons-idreamedofthis-300x180.png 300w" sizes="(max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px" /><figcaption>“I do declare, 400 years from now, the fruit of our loins shall produce a lanky, pale-faced dreamer!”</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>They had one child together, Thomas Rolfe (also my great grandfather, of course).</p>

<p>Pocahontas and John Rolfe sailed to London to visit <strong>King James</strong> and <strong>Queen Anne</strong> in 1616. There, she was reportedly <em>treated as the princess they considered her to be</em>, and she actually became somewhat of a celebrity.</p>

<p>(Continued below, but I do hope you&#8217;ll consider following along with me&#8230;I&#8217;m a travel photographer, but am now journeying back into America&#8217;s roots to uncover my own family story. I&#8217;m just getting started!)</p>

<p>They remained in Britain until early 1617, when it was time to set sail back to Virginia. This trip may have exposed Pocahontas to unfamiliar germs and/or stress, and tragically, she became quite sick before they even made it out to sea. She died and was buried in Gravesend, England.</p>

<p>Since then, her story has captured the hearts and imaginations of millions around the world.</p>

<p>I grew up in California, and never felt <em>particularly patriotic</em>. However, after years of diving into other cultures and living on the opposite side of the world, I began to finally see and appreciate where <em>I</em> came from. To realize what a big, beautifully diverse country the U.S. is&#8230;and that yes, of course we have <em>our own culture.</em></p>

<p>Basically, I finally learned to love <em>my own</em> country.<em>..</em>just as I had come to love <em>so many others</em>.</p>

<p>&#8230;and I&#8217;ve realized <strong>just how American I really am</strong>. I mean, clearly my roots go wayyyy back. Quite literally, to <em>the very beginning</em>.</p>

<div class="wp-block-image"><figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="400" height="570" src="https://idreamedofthis.com/images/nathan-allen-drytown-saloon-in-amador-county-california.png" alt="Nathan Allen @ Drytown Saloon in Amador County, California" class="wp-image-2555" srcset="https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/nathan-allen-drytown-saloon-in-amador-county-california.png 400w, https://idreamedofthis.com/wp-content/uploads/nathan-allen-drytown-saloon-in-amador-county-california-211x300.png 211w" sizes="(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px" /><figcaption>Me in 2017, tracing more family history in California&#8217;s Gold Country</figcaption></figure></div>

<p>Being homesick on the other side of the world makes this discovery <em>especially</em> surreal for me.</p>

<p>I think back to being a kid in school, learning about Pocahontas and the Jamestown colonists. I never could have imagined that I had such an intimate connection to these historic events – from <em>both the English and Native American</em> perspectives.</p>

<p>It also blows my mind to think that if Pocahontas hadn&#8217;t met John Rolfe, <em>I wouldn&#8217;t exist</em>. Even more wild to realize that without the peace created by their union, possibly, <em>neither would the United States of America.</em></p>
