There is a granite wonderland up in Yosemite’s high country, and it’s a perfect playground for kids and adults alike.
Olmsted point is a turnout right along the road, and it’s an easy hike and climb to get up to some amazing views. However, it is very high in elevation, so it’s good to not push yourself too hard. You can really feel how thin the air is up here!
These majestic western juniper trees really add to the character of the landscape. Sometimes they appear to grow right out of the rock face!
You are also treated to unique views of iconic “Half Dome” from here. There are far fewer people that make it out to Tioga than visit Yosemite valley each year.
Tenaya Lake
We love to take day trips to the lake, and set up a nice picnic with a tent for Abbie.
This is by far one of the most scenic and pristine bodies of water in all of the Sierra. It’s quite clear, with a beautiful blue hue…and the granite mountains surrounding it are breathtaking.
Tioga Road is usually closed until May each year, and the water is full of freezing cold snowmelt at that time. For that reason, swimming is much preferable closer to July (mid-summer). Tenaya peak looks down over the lake, and you can see it here reflected in Shella’s sunglasses.
We often take inner tubes out on the water, or simply wade out and sit on the rocks.
I always make it a point to come back here, because I can think of no better place to spend summers during childhood. I hope this is a tradition we will always continue, and even one that Abbie will continue with her own family someday.
We also meet travelers from all over the world here, so that’s a nice bonus. I’m grateful to be able to enjoy this stunning lake, and grateful for the family to enjoy it with.
By the way, you can find more related Olmsted Point photos on my Yosemite Website.
Cheers,
